International Football - Maradona gets two month ban
Argentina coach Diego Maradona has been given a two-month ban and fined over £14,800 following his globally-broadcast foul-mouthed outburst at the end of last month's decisive World Cup qualifier in Uruguay.
Maradona, 49, who faced a potential ban from some of his team's matches at next year's World Cup, apologised for his behaviour and showed remorse, FIFA said.
He was sanctioned after an expletive-filled rant when interviewed on the touchline and produced another outburst in the post-match media conference, which was broadcast live on several television networks. Maradona told the media to "suck it and keep on sucking."
Named as Argentina coach 13 months ago after fighting off drug addiction, alcohol problems and obesity, Maradona appeared in person before the disciplinary tribunal behind closed doors at FIFA headquarters.
"The FIFA disciplinary committee...decided today to impose a two-month ban on taking part in any football related activity and a 25,000 CHF (£14,800) fine on the head coach of Argentina Diego Maradona," a FIFA statement said.
"The committee took into consideration the apologies and the sincere remorse shown by Maradona in its decision, which was communicated to him at the end of the meeting.
"The committee stressed that any breach of this decision or any repetition of a similar incident would mean that stronger sanctions would have to be imposed in the future."
FIFA said the sanction would start immediately and run until January 15. It means Maradona will not have to miss any competitive internationals, although Argentina are due to face the Czech Republic in a friendly at a venue to be decided next month.
The ban is the latest episode in the turbulent career of Maradona, who was thrown out of the 1994 World Cup for a doping offence, one of three such bans he received as a player.
Maradona flew in from Madrid, where his team lost 2-1 to Spain in a friendly on Saturday night. Wearing dark glasses and a track suit, he swept past reporters at Zurich airport refusing to comment.
Around 20 onlookers with Argentina flags and a similar number of journalists gathered outside the gates of FIFA headquarters in a quiet Zurich suburb on a grey, damp autumn day. Maradona was inside the building for just over 2-1/2 hours.
Maradona rounded on his critics after Argentina beat arch-rivals Uruguay 1-0 to secure their berth in the South Africa in the last game of an 18-match qualifying campaign.
The 1986 World Cup winner had been heavily criticised for defeats against Bolivia, Ecuador, Brazil and Paraguay that left twice world champions Argentina on the brink of failing to reach the World Cup for the first time since 1970.
Appointed in October last year, Maradona's coaching credential have been repeatedly questioned.
He has called up more than 70 players for 14 matches (eight qualifiers and six friendlies) and been criticised for his team selections.
Maradona's tenure has been marked by clashes with players, coaches, journalists and directors, most notably playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme who quit the team saying he and Maradona did not live "by the same codes".

Argentina Not That Strong Anymore - Nigeria Legend Peter Rufai
Former Nigeria goalkeeper says present Argentina squad is not so super.
Peter Rufai was in between the goalposts when Nigeria lost 2-1 to the Albiceleste at USA 94 but he believes that the present squad is not as good as the one that his Super Eagles team lost to back then.
“They do not possess that fearsome squad like the one they paraded at USA ‘94. Their quality is not as good, I feel strongly that the Eagles can beat them”, Rufai told Vanguard.
Argentina’s victory over Nigeria then was achieved through striker Claudio Carniggia’s brace.
“Although we lost to them, we gave them a good fight they won’t forget easily,” he said of the team that consisted of players like Diego Maradona, Gabriel Batistuta and Ariel Ortega amongst many others.
The former reliable hand also took a look at the present Eagles squad and gave a little advice to the coaches to bring home-based players into the team to encourage competition.
“The fighting spirit is missing in the present squad. Back then we had the home boys who were giving us stiff competition in camp and the fear of losing your shirt was always haunting you. You could [not] afford to falter whenever you were fielded,” he recalled.

Banfield Are Champions Of Argentina Despite Boca Juniors Defeat
Despite losing at home to illustrious city rivals Boca Juniors, Banfield may well have just enjoyed their greatest result of all time. For even in defeat, they have done enough to win the Argentine Apertura championship - their first ever top-flight trophy.
The failure of Newell's Old Boys to defeat San Lorenzo ensured that the little green and white side from the suburbs finished two points clear at the top of the league table.
While Martin Palermo scored twice for Boca to sink their visitors, the Banfield fans at the Bombonera barely stopped celebrating throughout, as just four minutes after they went behind, San Lorenzo took the lead in Rosario through Fabian Bordagaray.
Both Palermo and Bordagaray scored in the second half to secure their respective results, and Banfield fans begun celebrating in earnest throughout the city.
Indeed, the supporters at the Bombonera were just part of the story. At the 'Lencho' stadium in Banfield, just 25 minutes' drive away, the stands were filled with fans listening to radios and watching on screens to follow the action throughout the day.
This is Banfield's first top-level championship in their 113-year history, beating their previous best of a second-place finish behind Velez Sarsfield in the 2005 Clausura.
Banfield had already qualified for the Copa de Libertadores 2010 due to their position in the top two, but also now guarantee entry to the group stage, whereas Newell's must overcome Emelec of Ecuador in the play-offs.
The Apertura season has just half a matchday remaining, with some questions regarding Argentina's complex relegation system still to be settled. No teams will drop down a level until the conclusion of the Clausura, which begins in the New Year.

Maradona runs over cameraman
Reuters - Thu, 20 May 10:26:00 2010
Argentina coach Diego Maradona yelled insults at an injured cameraman after accidentally running over his leg following his World Cup squad announcement.
Driving a Mini to a news conference on Wednesday, the 1986 World Cup winner was surrounded by newsmen but one was hit and he fell to the ground. According to a Reuters witness, Maradona's car then rolled over the lower part of his leg.
"What an black hole you are," Maradona shouted from the car. "How can you put your leg there where it can get run over, man?"
Paramedics ran to the scene to attend to the cameraman who was taken away for further treatment.
The 49-year-old coach, reckoned to be one of the greatest ever footballers, then delivered the names of the 23-man squad for the World Cup finals (June 11-July 11) to the media.
Maradona's World Cup preparation was earlier disrupted in March when he needed minor facial surgery after being bitten by his dog.
