New boy Heskey wins it
Portsmouth Aston Villa
Emile Heskey (21)
Emile Heskey paid off the first instalment of his £3.5million transfer fee with a 20th-minute debut goal that took Aston Villa up to third in the Premier League with their latest smash-and-grab 1-0 success at Fratton Park.
• O'Neill revels in Villa victory
Luckless Portsmouth, meanwhile, slipped deeper into the relegation mire just four days after losing their grip on the FA Cup, losing Nadir Belhadj to a red card in the process.
Martin O'Neill's side are now level on points with second-placed Liverpool, who were at one stage linked with a transfer window move for their former striker Heskey.
On this evidence, he already looks an astute purchase for Villa.
Villa, though, were left clinging on against Pompey's 10 men who should have snatched a equaliser right at the end when substitute John Utaka ran straight into goalkeeper Brad Friedel instead of shooting from close range.
Earlier Pompey boss Tony Adams - who has won just two of 14 games since taking over from Harry Redknapp - saw his own new signing Hayden Mullins waste two plausible chances.
He was further sickened when Algerian Nadir Belhadj saw red - first for tripping Craig Gardner and then handling the ball after an innocuous clash with Carlos Cuellar.
Pompey still battled to the end with substitute Utaka missing another clear opportunity right at the death. But by then most of the 19,073 crowd must have know it was again going to be Villa's night.
The visitors had barely threatened before keeper Brad Friedel's monster clearance was headed on unchallenged by Agbonlahor, who found Heskey's fine run.
The England striker was afforded too much space to meet his partner's ball on the edge of the area and drilled it first time past David James.
Peter Crouch missed a sitter as Pompey took the game firmly to their high-flying visitors in the second half.
The industrious Jermaine Pennant, signed last week from Liverpool, brilliantly set up his former Kop team-mate but Crouch stabbed his shot over the crossbar from just six yards.
Villa were happy to play it on the break although their defence, still lacking the injured Martin Laursen, looked none too happy against Pompey's continued pressure.
Pennant and Sean Davis forced saves from Friedel and Portsmouth looked sound at the back despite the absence of skipper Sol Campbell in the second period.
Campbell was replaced at half time by another former Spurs centre-half, Younes Kaboul.
But the south coast side's hopes took a major dent when Belhadj was dismissed in the 71st minute.
Curiously, though, it looked like Pompey had the numerical advantage, such was their territorial authority as Villa flagged.
Gareth Barry and James Milner were willing soldiers for Villa, whose game is built so much on solid team-work and although Heskey was comfortably policed in the second period, Pompey were always concerned by the pace of Agbonlahor.
Indeed, the 22-year-old forward should have wrapped it five minutes before the break when he dragged wide trying to beat James at his near post after sprinting clear.
Relegation looks a real threat now for Pompey with games against Liverpool and Manchester United coming up, but for Villa the future looks exciting - even though they rarely thrilled at Fratton Park.
# O'Neill revels in Villa victory
Martin O'Neill was in jovial mood after Aston Villa set a new club record for away wins in the Premier League and climbed to third in the table.
Debutant Emile Heskey's 20th minute winner at Portsmouth added weight to Villa's unlikely title ambitions and O'Neill quipped: "I'll think we'll win it now!''
Only a few weeks ago O'Neill asked an interviewer "are you drunk?'' after it was suggested Villa could break the big-four monopoly and finish top of the Premier League pile in May.
Although the Villa manager continues to make light of the possibility in public, he is now surely privately believing it could actually happen - with the midlands team behind second-placed Liverpool only on goal difference and just three points adrift of leaders and champions Manchester United.
He admitted after Villa reeled off a sixth successive away win in the league and a ninth this season: "At least we are making it a bit interesting.
"And I'm delighted with how we are performing. The spirit in the side is first class.
"We've been without John Carew for two months and now Martin Laursen and Ashley Young are missing as well. If you had told me at the start of the season we would be doing so well without players like this then I'd just never have believed you.''
Villa have been piling up the points despite not always impressing and there was no doubt they had the rub of the green against luckless Pompey, who slipped deeper into the relegation zone just four days after losing their grip on the FA Cup thanks to a fourth round home defeat by Swansea.
But new signing Heskey delivered the goods on his debut with a first-half goal he both created and finished in partnership with Gabriel Agbonlahor and said: "It's nice to score on your debut because it can be difficult settling into a new club.
"But I've had some great times with some great clubs including with Martin at Leicester and I'm sure it's going to be the same here at Villa. Sooner or later someone is going to break up the (established) big four and hopefully it will be Villa.''
O'Neill said: "I'm delighted with Emile. I thought he was excellent. Please God he'll stay fit because then it should be a great partnership with Gabby whose had to work himself into the ground the last few weeks.''
Pompey manager Tony Adams, who has won only two of 14 league games since taking over from Harry Redknapp, said: "I thought we were unlucky tonight. I thought we played ever so well even with 10 men in the last 20 minutes.
"But at the moment everything seems to be against us. You get punished for just one mistake, but we were well-organised, full of spirit and if you look at the stats we had the best of the game.''
Pompey still looked capable of snatching at least a point even after Nadir Belhadj was sent off for two petty yellow card offences - a clumsy trip and a deliberate handball - 20 minutes from the end.
Adams admitted: "I can't have any complaints about the sending off. But I'm not angry with Belhadj. We could have had a penalty, though when (Jermaine) Pennant was blocked off a little bit.
"You always need points - everyone says that but when you don't get them you just have to move on and look for them in the next game.
"I was encouraged and delighted, though, by the performance. The majority of the game we were the better team and we are certainly not giving up the fight.
"Pennant played ever so well again but that will be swallowed up in the result. Hayden Mullins gave us exactly what I thought we would. An honest guy, plays it simple - the type you need in your team.
"There are still encouraging signs and we'll work on them. I'd still like a couple more new players but it's a difficult market. We could do with another one up front another one in midfield.'' |

Goals from James Milner and Gabriel Agbonlahor secured a vital 2-0 victory for Aston Villa at Blackburn to raise their hopes of a place in the Champions League.
• O'Neill: Milner for England
Milner made the breakthrough in the 26th minute and Agbonlahor sewed things up on the stroke of full time.
It meant a seventh successive away win for Villa - an all-time club record - and an indication of their progress under manager Martin O'Neill.
Villa played with the confidence of a side riding high in the table on the back of a 12-match unbeaten run.
They carved out the first chance of the game as early as the second minute when England striker Emile Heskey saw his effort blocked after good link up play between Gareth Barry and James Milner.
Blackburn were finding Heskey hard to handle and he chested the ball into the net in the 16th minute following an inswinging free kick from Barry.
However Heskey was left bewildered that his effort was disallowed after an apparent foul on Christopher Samba.
A minute later Blackburn came close when Morten Gamst Pedersen sent a close-range shot wide of the target after good skill by Jason Roberts.
Ashley Young then won a free-kick off Pedersen but his free-kick was headed to safety and away from the danger area by Samba.
Villa took the lead in the 26th minute when Milner played a clever one-two with Barry from a corner.
Blackburn failed to pick up Milner when he made the run and he rifled a shot into the corner beyond goalkeeper Paul Robinson.
Villa maintained the momentum and Agbonlahor whipped in a cross after 34 minutes that Ryan Nelsen cleared to safety.
Young took the corner and Curtis Davies got clear of his marker, only to head narrowly wide of the post.
Milner then got back to divert a shot from Benni McCarthy to safety after Roberts had engineered the opening.
Blackburn then had claims for a penalty waved away in the 40th minute when McCarthy seemed to be hauled back by Barry.
A minute later Villa had the ball in the net again but Agbonlahor's effort was ruled out for an infringement.
The visitors were growing in confidence and Agbonlahor got clear on the stroke of half time but failed to test Robinson.
The goalkeeper did well to parry Milner's shot in stoppage time as Blackburn again found themselves on the back foot.
Milner was putting in a hard shift and he gave Agbonlahor half a chance in the 53rd minute but he scuffed a shot wide of the post.
Villa looked dangerous on the counter attack and Milner's shot was blocked ten minutes later after he was set up by substitute Craig Gardner.
A minute later Agbonlahor was out of luck when he saw his effort cleared off the line by Vince Grella.
It was a good spell by Villa against a home side desperate not to drop any more points on their own patch in their battle to beat the drop.
Milner should have added a second for Villa in the 76th minute but somehow screwed a close-range shot wide following a surging run from Young.
Santa Cruz almost pulled Blackburn level five minutes later, only to drag his effort the wrong side of the post.
Agbonlahor then made the game safe on the stroke of full time when his effort spun off Nelsen and past Robinson.
Blackburn remain locked in a relegation battle after their first defeat since Sam Allardyce took charge 10 games ago.
# O'Neill: Milner for England
Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill has backed James Milner to have a glittering England career.
Milner capped an impressive display in the 2-0 victory against Blackburn at Ewood Park today with his fifth goal of the season in the 26th minute.
Gabriel Agbonlahor settled matters on the stroke of full-time to seal a club record seventh successive away win.
In the process Villa overtook Chelsea to claim third spot and enhance their Champions League credentials.
O'Neill praised Milner's contribution.
"He has been brilliant, '' said the Villa boss. "He has come on strong. He scored a goal, missed a goal from a yard and a half and I will remind him of that. But I cannot think of anything else that did not warrant praise.''
O'Neill, joking that Milner had played for England Under-21s "7,000 times'', added: "He has played more for them than he has for us and that includes his time on loan.
"But he has piles of time on his side. He will be on the plane for South Africa (for the World Cup), that is the main thing.''
Milner made the breakthrough following a clever one-two with Gareth Barry from a corner.
Blackburn failed to pick up his run and Milner rifled a shot into the corner.
Villa maintained the momentum but only sealed victory right at the death when Agbonlahor's effort spun off Ryan Nelsen and into the net.
Even though his side stretched their unbeaten run to 13 matches, O'Neill is refusing to get carried away.
He said: "I am delighted of course but I am not targeting anything. We are going great and deserve to be where we are. But we really must try and keep this momentum going. That is essential. I could not be more pleased with the team. They have put their heart and soul into games.
"We have a lot of belief about ourselves. The team is playing excellently. We have players hovering around the England scene which is great for the club and great for them.''
The only downside was that England striker Emile Heskey came off with an Achilles tendon problem while Carlos Cuellar suffered a tight hamstring.
Blackburn remain locked in a relegation battle after their first defeat since Sam Allardyce took charge ten games ago.
Allardyce had no complaints about the result and conceded his team had been second best.
Former goalkeeper Brad Friedel did not have a shot to save on his return to Ewood Park.
Allardyce said: "Villa were too good for us, that was our problem, so we have to take it on the chin. They are the first team to be better than us since I took charge. Of course I am disappointed but we did not deserve anything.
"You have to give Villa credit. They are very good going forward but you also have to admire them when they don't have possession. They work so hard to get the ball back. That is why they are one of the best teams away from home in the Premier League. The only positive is we kept going until the end of the game.'' |
