Kusakari Tamiyo & Seto Koji to star in new NHK drama

It was announced that Kusakari Tamiyo will star in NHK’s new drama “Nemureru Mori no Jukujo“, which will begin airing in September.  After retiring as a ballerina in 2009, Kusakari started a new career path as an actress.  She made her drama debut in NHK’s Taiga drama “Ryomaden” (2010), and this will be the first time for her to take a lead role in a drama.

This drama will be a love comedy between the heroine ‘Aizawa Chinami’ (Kusakari), 46-year-old housewife, who is under divorce mediation, and  ’Takaoka Yusuke’, a son of the owner of a global hotel chain. The role of Takaoka will be played by Seto Koji who is over 20 years younger than the heroine.

One day, ‘Chinami’ is given divorce papers by her husband (Haba Yuichi) as he wants to re-marry with his old classmate and first love from junior high school (Moriguchi Yoko). In order to keep the parental custody over her son, she starts working at a luxury hotel, and meets ‘Yusuke’ who is commonly called as ‘prince’ because of his perfect character in public, however, behind closed doors he as very terrible and mean personality.

On her role, Kusakari commented, “I never thought I would be able to play this kind of role, so I am truly happy, and it feels rewarding.  I think this story has the message of ‘you can overcome difficulties’ brightly and positively, but I can’t even imagine a love with a young man with big age gap like Seto-kun.”  On the other hand, Seto said, “Although I’ve never thought of being in love with someone with such a huge age gap, I still remember the feeling of getting swayed by the sexiness and atmosphere from a mature woman who has been through both good and bad things in life (Recalling his first meeting with Kusakari).”  He also commented about his role, “I would like to cherish the negative image, carefully exercising human traits of beastliness and craftiness while acting in this role.  Since this will be a new challenge for me, I want to prepare for the role sincerely.”

“Nemureru Mori no Jukujo” will air from September 4th to October 30th with a total 9 episodes.

Aqua Timez to sing theme song for Nakama Yukie’s upcoming drama

It’s been revealed that rock band Aqua Timez will be singing the theme song for Nakama Yukie’s upcoming drama, ‘Ghost Mama Sousasen‘!

This is the first time Aqua Timez and Nakama Yukie will be working together since ‘Gokusen‘. After reuniting with the members of the band, Nakama commented, “The theme song, ‘Tsubomi’ (‘Bud’) has very gentle lyrics that are perfect for the drama’s worldview. I know they will liven up the drama!!”

‘Ghost Mama Sousasen’ is a heart-warming comedy based on Sato Tomokazu’s manga of the same title. Nakama plays the role of a capable police officer named ‘Choko’ who suddenly passes away. As a ghost, she appears in front of her son ‘Tonbo’ (played by Kimino Yuma), and solves various cases with him.

The drama also stars Sawamura Ikki as Choko’s husband ‘Kouhei’, Shida Mirai as Choko’s daughter ‘Aoi’, Sanada Yuma as Aoi’s classmate, former SDN48 member Serina, comedian duo Drunk Dragon’s Tsukaji Muga, and Namase Katsuhisa.

Aqua Timez vocalist Futoshi was overjoyed that the drama’s theme corresponded with what he wanted to sing. “I’m very honored that we will be in charge of the theme song for the ‘Gokusen’ team,” he expressed.

Futoshi also shared that out of all the songs he’s worked on so far, he spent the most time arranging this one. “I feel that a bud (tsubomi) holds a message saying that it won’t look up to the sky unless it blossoms. It’s not going to end if you don’t give up. I hope this song will reach those who strive for the best until they blossom.”

NTV will air ‘Ghost Mama Sousasen’ every Saturday night at 9:00 pm starting on July 7th.

On July 2nd, it was revealed that AKB48’s Kojima Haruna will star in a late-night drama called ‘Megu-tan tte Mahou Tsukaeruno?‘ on NTV this coming summer season.

Kojima is going to play a mage-to-be called Megu, who is a total airhead and always gets treated as a poor student at her magic school. In order to get more practice, she gets dispatched to a boarding home in the human world called ‘Rokudemo Sou’, where she has to be a manager. However, her identity as a mage may never be exposed or she will never be able to return to her home world.

It’s been four years since Kojima’s last starring role in a drama. She commented, “Of course I’m nervous, but I’m not really feeling more pressure only because it’s a starring role.” People around her often call her a natural airhead, so you might think that this is the perfect role for her, but Kojima herself begs to differ. “I’m really not an airhead, which is why I’ll be able to portray this role accurately.”

The drama is going to feature many scenes where Megu will be flashing her panties in order to erase other people’s memories. AKB48’s producer Akimoto Yasushi personally asked Kojima whether she would be approve of flashing her panties. She explained, “I wasn’t all that surprised (about there being such scenes) and told him that I’d be fine as long as they aren’t cheaply done.”

It’s said that there is going to be at least one such scene in every episode and although the filming hasn’t yet started, Kojima is already very excited about it. She said, “I heard they’ll blow a lot of wind and film it from various angles.”

The script of this comical fantasy story is handled by no other than Fukuda Yuichi, whose most recent works include the dramas ‘Yuusha Yoshihiko to Maou no Shiro‘ and ‘Muse no Kagami‘. The supporting cast includes Muro Tsuyoshi, Iketani Nobue, TEAM NACS‘ Otoo Takuma, Nakamura Tomoya, and others.

‘Megu-tan tte Mahou Tsukaeruno?’ is scheduled to air every Saturday at 1:35 am, with the first episode being broadcast on July 7th.

BUMP OF CHICKEN’s new song, “firefly“, has been chosen as the theme song for Fuji TV’s upcoming drama series, ‘Iki mo Dekinai Natsu‘.

The drama’s producers asked BUMP OF CHICKEN to provide the theme song because, “The worldview of BUMP OF CHICKEN’s songs were required as the theme song for the story that unfolds between the protagonist, whose birth wasn’t recorded in the family register and the people who surround her.”

After receiving the offer, the band came up with the song “firefly”. Because the songs’ message and sounds linked together with the drama, it was chosen as the theme song. This is BUMP OF CHICKEN’s first time providing a new song as the theme of a drama.

The script for ‘Iki mo Dekinai Natsu’ is written by Watanabe Chiho, who made her drama debut as the second writer for ‘Tentai Kansoku‘ back in 2002. It was created with the worldview of BUMP OF CHICKEN’s song “Tentai Kansoku‘, and the bands’ songs were used throughout the drama.

Miyazaki Aoi, Abe Hiroshi & Yamaguchi Tomoko to co-star in new drama this fall

On July 10th, it was announced that Miyazaki Aoi, Abe Hiroshi, and Yamaguchi Tomoko will be starring in an upcoming Fuji TV fall drama whose title has yet to be announced.

This drama is certainly going to be on everyone’s minds after today’s headlines, since it features three huge and amazing stars. While Abe is still familiar among drama viewers, Miyazaki hasn’t been appearing in a commercial network drama since ‘Shiawase no Shippo‘ (TBS) in 2002. Her last starring role on TV in general was in the 2008 taiga drama ‘Atsuhime‘ on the public network NHK. Yamaguchi’s last serial drama appearance even dates back to ‘Long Vacation‘ (Fuji TV) in 1996.

The directing and the script will be handled by world renowned movie director Koreeda Hirokazu (‘Kiseki’, ‘Air Doll’).

The story of this fall drama will revolve around a 40-year-old company employee (Abe) and his wife (Yamaguchi). Together they face various all too familiar family problems which are said to make viewers both cry and laugh together with the characters. This home drama atmosphere will be spiced up by a mysterious beauty (Miyazaki) whom the protagonist happens to meet one day. For some reason she’s begins to probe into matters related to his family, manipulates him without his knowledge and sometimes blurts out some crucial hints that will help solving the puzzle that she is.

Not much else is known about this drama yet, but the producer described Miyazaki’s role as follows: “She’s a puzzling, beautiful and strong woman who doesn’t seem to be affected by the hustle and bustle of the urban jungle at all. Her beauty is both refined and graceful. When I was talking with director Koreeda about the casting of this role, we only were able to think of Miyazaki.”

Miyazaki herself commented, “The characters in Koreeda’s works are always so full of live. He’s a fantastic director and I’m happy to be a part of his new project.”

She continued, “It makes me nervous to film together with two such big seniors. I’ll treasure the time we’ll be able to live together as part of this drama and will make sure to enjoy the months of filming ahead of us.”

Abe is looking forward to it as well. He said, “Miyazaki’s acting is very refined and I can’t wait to work together with her.”

Fuji TV is planning to air this drama every Tuesday at 10:00 pm. The first episode is scheduled to be broadcast sometime in October. More details such as the drama’s title are most liked going to be revealed within the coming weeks.

Motokariya’s character ‘Kaise Rakuko’ is coming from a poor household and always wanted to become a lawyer in order to escape from poverty. In order to pay for her school expenses, she works as a hostess. She studies hard and eventually passes the bar examination, however, open positions for lawyers are rare these days. At the law office, she has no choice but to accept small cases that won’t earn her any money. Moreover, she keeps on piling up failures case after case. However, things get better over time and she not only becomes a better lawyer but also a more mature person.

The producer of the drama explained that they decided to cast Motokariya for this role, because she’s not only a pretty actress but also has the intellect necessary to play the role of a lawyer. Moreover, she’s able to play characters that won’t give up despite taking a lot of hits.

Amami Yuki to portray Oda Nobunaga in an upcoming drama two-parter

On July 18th, Fuji TV announced that they are going to air a two-part drama titled ‘Onna Nobunaga‘, revealing that actress Amami Yuki will be starring as a female version of Oda Nobunaga during the Sengoku period.

Amami might have already became familiar of portraying a boss in the drama ‘BOSS‘, but now she’s going to stem the difficult role of playing the ‘boss’ of the Sengoku period. In this altered edition of Japan’s history, Oda Nobuhide never had a second son but a daughter, who is still being raised as his heir and successor. The story is based on a novel by award-winning writer Sato Kenichi, which was published in 2006. It explores in great detail how things might have been handled if Oda Nobunaga was a woman up until the Honnoji Incident where Oda was forced to commit suicide.

The novel was already adapted into a stage play starring actress Kuroki Meisa in 2009, but it’s the first time for it to get a movie or TV adaptation. “When I read the title, Amami’s face suddenly popped up in my head,” Fuji TV producer Murase Ken explained. Thus he immediately sent her the offer and she immediately gave her ready consent.

Amami commented, “How often do you get the chance to experience such a role in your life? It’s a real blessing and a very much appreciated challenge for me.”

She is going to disguise herself as the daimyo in the Sengoku period, but due to her gender she will face a much stronger opposition and many more struggles than the real Oda Nobunaga. One aspect of the drama will be the fact that she’s not only going to portray a masculine and military-minded Oda with his trademark mustache, but also the well-behaved and feminine woman that she is by nature.

Of course there is coming a lot of pressure with playing such a popular historical figure, which was already portrayed by many great actors. However, Amami seems to be quite calm despite the pressure. She nonchalantly explained, “I’ve begun to master the art of keeping myself from getting worried. (laughs)”

The filming already began last week and she seems to be in a great mood. She said, “Every day I’m able to start full of enthusiasm and end with a satisfying tiredness. I’m devoting all of my energy to this project and I hope you’ll look forward to it.”

The biggest traitor in the history of Japan, Akechi Mitsuhide will be portrayed by actor Uchino Masaaki. However, in this version Akechi is in love with Oda from the bottom of his heart. Nonetheless Oda is getting married to Onou (Nouhime). Onou will be portrayed by actress Koyuki, who will finally make her drama comeback. Due to them both being women, Oda and Onou develop a great friendship and can talk about all kind of things, but it doesn’t exactly make them look like a married couple. Adding the feelings of Akechi and we are in for a very strange love-triangle.

Other characters will be played by Iseya Yusuke, Nagasawa Masami, Tamayama Tetsuji, Nakamura Shido, Fujiki Naohito, Sato Koichi, and Nishida Toshiyuki.

‘Onna Nobunaga’ is scheduled to air at the end of the year, but an exact date and time have yet to be announced.
