Oguri Shun and Ishihara Satomi to star in Fuji TV’s upcoming Monday drama

Fuji TV has just announced their Monday drama (‘Getsu 9′) for the upcoming summer season and it’s going to star Oguri Shun and Ishihara Satomi in a modern Japanese version of ‘Pretty Woman‘ called ‘Rich Man, Poor Woman‘.

Oguri plays a billionaire and manager of a major IT company. Similar to the life of Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, he had become a billionaire when his website, which started out only as a hobby, gradually started to gain more and more popularity. However, due to his lack of management skills and despicable personality, people often label him as swindler and otaku*.

Ishihara, on the other hand, plays a very talented young woman who is about to graduate from the Department of Science at Tokyo University. However, due to the current scarcity of employment, she hasn’t yet received any positive feedback from any of the applications she sent out. She is veering towards leading a poor life in her future. One day, the pair happen to run into each other, which doesn’t end really well at first due to the disparity in their personalities, but they soon start to feel attracted to each other.

This is going to be Oguri’s first starring role in a drama since his marriage to actress Yamada Yu. The last time he and Ishihara worked together was during the filming of the NHK taiga drama ‘Yoshitsune‘ back in 2005. He commented, “I’m really looking forward to this modern version of ‘Pretty Woman’. Of course I’m also looking forward to working together with Ishihara and to find out how this love story is going to develop.”

Ishihara stated, “Although I’m really happy that I get to co-star with Oguri in a drama, I first got to know him when I was still in my teens (when we filmed ‘Yoshitsune’), which is why I’m feeling a bit awkward that it has to be a love story.”

The rest of the main cast includes Aibu Saki as an up-and-coming female chef and Iura Arata (formerly known under his stage name ARATA) as her older brother and co-manager of the IT company, who together complete the love square.

The midsummer evening romance ‘Rich Man, Poor Woman’ is scheduled to air its first episode in July.

Kamikawa Takaya’s drama ‘Iryu Sousa’ to come back with new cast members

It was announced on May 20 that actor Kamikawa Takaya’s TV Asahi’s drama ‘Iryu Sousa‘ will come back with a new series starting in July.

This will be the second season of ‘Iryu Sousa’ as the first season was aired during April to June 2011. The detective drama tells the story of detective Itomura Satoshi (Kamikawa), who can “hear” voices of the dead from things left behind at crime scenes.

Though a detective, he is bad at sensing mood. However, his tender attitude when it comes to solving crimes seems to have attracted TV viewers as the highest audience rating of the first season was 17.0%, and the average rating marked 14.3% (Kanto region).

Producer Miwa Yumiko enthusiastically stated, “I want this drama to bring up popular detective series like ‘Aibou‘ and ‘Rinjo‘.”

In the previous series, Itomura was in the First Investigation Division at the metropolitan police department, but in the new series, he was relegated to Tsukishima Central Police Station, which is in a more peaceful town. Saito Yuki, Yashima Norito and Miyake Yuji will appear in the series as new cast members.

Kamikawa stated, “The meaning of ‘Kaisai wo Sakebu(to shout with exultation)’ is exactly what I’m feeling now. I would like to act as Itomura while putting all my best and everything I have now [into it].”

Live-Action GTO Remake Confirmed with EXILE Member Akira

The producers of the GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka live-action television series remake confirmed on Wednesday that EXILE band member Akira will star in the series. Akira replaces Takashi Sorimachi as the title character in the remake of the 1998 drama. Both live-action versions are based on Tohru Fujisawa's original school comedy manga about a former gang member who becomes an unorthodox teacher.

20-year-old actress Miori Takimoto (Higanjima) will play the heroine Azusa Fuyutsuki, and 51-year-old Hitomi Kuroki (20th Century Boys, Dark Water) will play the principal who believes in the teaching abilities of Onizuka. 26-year-old Yuu Shirota (The Prince of Tennis) will play a friend from Onizuka's biker gang days who now lives with Onizuka. 24-year-old Yūsuke Yamamoto and 60-year-old Ryōsei Tayama round out the cast; Tayama will play the loud-mouthed vice-principal and Onizuka's nemesis. The series will premiere in July on the Fuji TV network and will run on Tuesdays at 10:00 p.m.

The Nikkan Sports newspaper had reported earlier this month that the 30-year-old Akira would replace 27-year-old actor/singer Jin Akanishi. Nikkan Sports had noted in April that Akanishi was forced by Johnny & Associates, his talent agency, to leave the remake. Akanishi married the actress/singer Meisa Kuroki (23) on February 2, and he reportedly did not notify Johnny & Associates until after registering his marriage. Kuroki confirmed last month that she is pregnant.

Tokyopop published the original manga in North America. In 2009, Fujisawa returned to the character of Onizuka with the manga Shonan 14 Days. Vertical announced in May that it licensed both GTO: Shonan 14 Days and Shonan Junai-gumi (the predecessor to Great Teacher Onizuka) for North America. Fujisawa just finished Shonan 14 Days last year, but he launched a three-chapter spinoff in November.

Takei Emi & Eguchi Yosuke to play a pair of lovers in new drama ‘Iki mo Dekinai Natsu’

On May 28th, Fuji TV announced that young actress Takei Emi (18) and actor Eguchi Yosuke (46) are going to play a pair of lovers in the upcoming summer drama ‘Iki mo Dekinai Natsu‘.

A 19-year-old girl burdened by a cruel destiny, a 41-year-old man living in atonement, and a forbidden love that cannot be accepted by the people around them. ‘Iki mo Dekinai Natsu’ is as much a social drama as it is a love story.

Takei plays said girl who learns that her mother never recorded her birth in their family register. While falling into despair after finding out the secret about her birth yet wholeheartedly trying to live to regain ‘herself’, she happens to run into a former journalist (Eguchi) who is suffering from a deep scar in his heart himself. Although they could be father and daughter, they start to develop much stronger feelings for each other, a love forbidden by society.

Of course the drama’s main focus lies on the feelings of both protagonists, but it’s also heavily influenced by themes of ‘atonement’ and ‘forgiveness’.

Takei commented, “I seem to be able to playact [with Eguchi] a lot in the drama, which I’m looking forward to a lot.” It’s her first starring role on Fuji TV, about which she said, “You could call me a ‘Fuji Kid’, since I’ve been watching dramas on Fuji TV ever since I was a child. What I thought is impossible has now become reality, which makes me incredibly happy, but also very frightened.” About Eguchi, she added, “He’s a really fantastic person. I want to learn a lot from him.”

Eguchi commented, “I cannot wait to see how the souls of the protagonists played by Takei and I are going to collide. This will be a drama that is going to touch people’s hearts.”

The two actors will also have a great team of supporting actors to portray various intriguing characters around them. The mother of the 19-year-old girl, for example, will be played by no other than Kimura Yoshino (36).

Moreover, the lead female works at a shop that sells sweets and is often visited by a mysterious old man played by Kitaouji Kinya (69). There is also another lonely young man, played Nakamura Aoi (21), who is in love with her. Her grandmother will be played by Asada Miyoko (56). One man with a daring smile who seems to fudge with the destiny of all the characters involved will be played by Kaname Jun (31).

Fuji TV is going to air ‘Iki mo Dekinai Natsu’ every Tuesday at 9:00 pm, starting in July.

11 short stories by Higashino Keigo to be adapted into a drama

On May 14th, Fuji TV announced that they will be adapting 11 of Higashino Keigo’s best short stories into one omnibus drama called ‘Mokuyo Gekijo – Higashino Keigo Mysteries‘.

The drama will be comprised of 11 episodes, featuring 11 different stories and starring 11 different actors. Of course the name Higashino stands for amazing mystery novels, but it’s his varied use of different atmospheres from serious to comedic to eerie that make each story stand out from his previous works. This kind of variety becomes even more evident when composed into short stories and that’s exactly what Fuji TV wants to offer their viewers this coming summer season. Airing a weekly drama in an omnibus style is a first in the history of Japanese dramas.
Actor Nakai Kiichi will serve as a story guide and will introduce each of the stories for the viewers with a certain breeze of humor.

The first story ‘Sayonara Coach‘ is from a collection called ‘Hannin no Inai Satsujin no Yoru‘ and stars actor Karasawa Toshiaki. He plays an archery coach whose favorite pupil committed suicide after his dream to participate in the Olympics didn’t come true.

Karasawa commented, “First of all Higashino knows how to create gripping mysteries, but it’s also his depiction of the darkness that dwells within each of us and the weakness and slyness of people that makes his works so fascinating. I can’t wait to portray the depth of human psychology together with the rest of the cast.”

Aside from ‘Hannin no Inai Satsujin no Yoru’, Fuji TV will be adapting short stories from Higashino’s collections called ‘Ayashii Hitobito‘ and ‘Ano Koro no Dareka‘.

The second short story, ‘Endless Night‘, stars Matsushita Nao as a woman whose husband is killed. In the third story called ‘Reiko to Reiko‘, a lawyer played by Mizuki Alisa gets dragged into a mysterious murder case related to a puzzling young girl. In ‘Amai Hazu Nanoni‘, Sorimachi Takashi ends up in an ultimate conflict as a man who loses his daughter in a mysterious incident. Nagasawa Masami will have to solve the mysterious puzzle left behind by her murdered boyfriend in a comedic mystery story called ‘Charade ga Ippai‘.

The cast of the remaining six short stories has yet to be confirmed and will be announced at a later date.

‘Mokuyo Gekijo – Higashino Keigo Mysteries’ will air every Thursday at 10:00 pm next season.

The DVD’s are from the viewpoints or perspectives of other people, so the people who watch the DVD’s may learn many shocking facts about themselves that they never knew about nor realized.

Kashii said her character Kaminuma is very mysterious. Her age is unknown and her background is unexplained, no one knows if she is a human being, an angel, or the devil.

Superfly to sing the theme song to Mukai Osamu’s upcoming drama

It was revealed that the new song “Kagayaku Tsuki no you ni” for Ochi Shiho’s solo project (Superfly) has been chosen as the theme song for the upcoming drama “Summer Rescue ~Tenkuu no Shinryojo“. The drama will begin airing on July 8th starring Mukai Osamu.

Reportedly, it’s a ballad song with full of vitality, and it has the theme of “regeneration.”  This will be the first time in 4 and a half years for Superfly to provide a theme song for a TBS drama.

According to Ochi who was touched by the storyline of the drama, she tried to make the lyrics as simple as possible without using difficult terms.  She says, “By being saved and supported by someone, it causes a person to grow a renewed feeling in his heart.  The song became almost like a letter to a precious person.”

It’s been undecided if the song will be officially released as a single at this moment.
