Zidane: Rejected by Spurs? I've never heard of themLast updated at 14:55pm on 5th January 2008
One of football's great myths is that three-time World Player of theYear Zinedine Zidane was rejected as a teenager by Tottenham.
The World Cup winner, who played for Real Madrid and Juventus, was supposedly branded 'too wooden' by Gerry Francis.
But when Zidane was asked about his widely-discussed trial in north London this week, ZZ looked baffled and spluttered "who?".
His translator apologised and explained: "I don't think he has heard of Tottenham Hotspur." |

Luton's administrator confident of avoiding fire sale
The administrator of Luton is confident new funding will soon be found which would prevent the League One club from being forced into selling any players.
Brendan Guilfoyle admitted last week that the club would have to sell players if funds were not made available instantly.
However, that fate could be avoided if a bidder agrees to pump money into Kenilworth Road early enough, and Guilfoyle is confident of a positive outcome following Sunday's morale-boosting FA Cup draw with Liverpool.
He said: 'I sense the need to get there as early as we can and I am hopeful that within the next week we can get to that stage.
'It is important at this stage to respect the confidentiality of the parties. We are where we wanted to be but there is still work to be done to bring the deal to a binding contract.
'They have shown us that they have the money but now we need them to open their wallets. The players are getting paid now for the first two weeks of January which they deserve after their recent results.'
Guilfoyle also confirmed 'more than one' bid has been received for the troubled club.
The deadline for interested parties to lodge a formal bid passed at 5pm on Monday and joint administrator Guilfoyle has confirmed that talks are ongoing with a number of interested groups.
He said: 'We have more than one bid which is obviously good news. We are now in the process of getting one bid to the stage of being the preferred bidder and then entering exclusive negotiations.
'The price of that is for one party to start funding the club straight away. We are asking for that to test their commitment.'
Chairman David Pinkney had agreed to fund the losses of the club out of his own pocket but that deal expired at the end of the year, leaving Guilfoyle facing up to selling the likes of Wales midfielder Dave Edwards, captain Chris Coyne and midfielders David Bell and Matthew Spring.
Guilfoyle may be remaining tight-lipped over who has lodged a bid but television presenter and lifelong Luton fan Nick Owen is hopeful that his bid will be successful.
He told BBC Three Counties radio: 'I cannot wait for us to get the go-ahead - I'm very hopeful.'

Luton Town deny FA charges
The Football Association have confirmed that League One side Luton have denied all 17 charges levelled at them in relation to payments to agents between July 2004 and February 2007. Luton, whose administrator announced last night that 'more than one' takeover bid has been received for the club, have now requested a personal hearing.
The charges, which were made in November, relate to payments to agents for nine specific player negotiations made through the club's holding company, Jayten Stadium Limited, rather than through the club as required by FA rules.
They also cover provision of misleading information to the FA, not holding representation contracts with the relevant agents for the above negotiations and dealing with unlicensed agents.
Former chairman Bill Tomlins has admitted seven charges of being allegedly involved in the rule breaches but has denied a further eight. He has also requested a personal hearing.
Former finance director Derek Peter has denied nine charges of approving payments made by Jayten Stadium Limited and requested a personal hearing.
Directors John Mitchell and Richard Bagehot have both denied failing to report the alleged rule breaches when they became aware of them and have requested personal hearings.
Agents Sky Andrew, Mike Berry, Mark Curtis, Stephen Denos, David Manasseh and Andrew Mills were all charged with allegedly failing to ensure that payments were made and disclosed through the proper channels and failing to enter into representation contracts as required.
Andrew, Curtis and Mills have denied both charges and requested personal hearings.
Denos, Mannaseh and Berry each admitted the charge relating to representation contracts and denied the other charge with Denos requesting a personal hearing.
If found guilty, those charged could face a wide range of sanctions including fines, suspensions, withdrawal of licences or possible points deduction for the club.
An FA spokesman confirmed that no dates have yet been scheduled for any of the personal hearings. |

Robinson Asks Spurs For A Transfer
England goalkeeper Paul Robinson has asked Tottenham Hotspur for a transfer after being dropped for last Wednesday's Carling Cup semi-final against Arsenal.
Paul Robinson wants to leave Tottenham, and manager Juande Ramos will not stand in his way. In fact Spurs are actively encouraging rival Premier League clubs to make them offers for the England goalkeeper.
When he was appointed as Spurs manager in October, Ramos quickly identified goalkeeper as a problem position and determined to bring in a replacement for Robinson, the incumbent number one at at White Hart Lane, claims the Daily Mail.
Ramos has replacements in mind, including Ajax keeper Maarten Stekelenburg. He will also be monitoring Camerooon's Carlos Idriss Kameni (currently with Espanyol) at the African Cup of Nations.
Robinson learned that he had been replaced by Radek Cerny for the semi-final against the Gunners when Ramos held a team meeting at 16.30 on Wednesday.
The England shot-stopper brooded on the substitutes' bench for the duration of the match, and demanded a transfer during talks with Spurs officials on Thursday.
Robinson had been dropped following Tottenham's 2-2 draw with Reading in the FA Cup last Saturday, but it is understood that his performance in the 6-4 win over the same opponents at White Hart Lane a week earlier had left Ramos particularly unimpressed.
The former Sevilla boss apparently felt that three of Reading's four goals could have been prevented, says the Mail.
He finally decided to drop Robinson when Stephen Hunt scored with a long-range free-kick last weekend that the goalkeeper caught but inadvertently carried over the line as he stepped backwards.
That goal, and the indignity of being dropped, appear to have spelt the end of Robinson's Spurs career and cap a miserable 12 months for a goalkeeper who was previously so highly regarded for club and country.
Perhaps a change of club will rebuild his confidence, restore his reputation and revive his flagging prospects.
Meanwhile, buying a new goalkeeper is likely to the main bit of business conducted by Tottenham during the current transfer window. |
