Ferguson plots Gerrard move to replace Keane

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson was reported to be considering an audacious 20-million-pound bid for Liverpool's Steven Gerrard to replace captain Roy Keane.
But the speculation was immediately dismissed by Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier, who claimed: "You would have to cut off both my arms before I let go of him because I would have them both wrapped around him."

Houllier, in an interview with the Liverpool Echo, described talk of players like Gerrard or Michael Owen leaving Anfield as "stupid and laughable."
He added: "Steven is irreplaceable. We have big plans for him here to take him up to an even higher level.
"I want him to not only become player of the year in England but he has every chance to be European and world player of the year in the future as well.
"Lothar Matthaus achieved that as a central midfielder and so can Steven. He's my captain and that tells you everything you need to know about what I think of him. And everyone knows what Steven thinks of the club, too."
There are however growing signs that United are looking to replace Keane, who has admitted he is unsure about whether he will see out the remaining two years of his contract at Manchester.
"You can't look too far ahead in football," said the 32-year-old Irishman who was believed to have infuriated Ferguson with his recent decision to come out of international retirement.
"I think as a player, you can't be looking too far ahead," Keane added.
"And in football, I think you should always expect the unexpected. I'm sitting here saying: 'I've got two years left on my contract'; many players have said that and before you know it, they're off."
Owen meanwhile has yet to put pen to paper on a new deal for Liverpool but he has assured the club he would not leave for one of their English rivals.
"I would be very upset if Michael left, because the best of him is yet to come," Houllier admitted.
The England striker recently began talks with Liverpool on a new contract that will keep him at Anfield beyond the end of next season, when his current deal expires.
"We have had preliminary talks and they went well," Houllier confirmed. "My position is the same as it has been all season. I think Michael will stay with us. Whether I am proved to be right or wrong only time will tell."

ni janji paling berani from houllier pernah aku dengar. kalau main sistem sekarang, pemain pun mcm sekarang ntah2 next season bole bawah drpd position sekarang ni. |
