Anelka a doubt for France qualifier

Chelsea forward Nicolas Anelka is a doubt for France's World Cup qualifying match with Romania on Saturday due to muscular problems.

Anelka scored Chelsea's second goal in their 2-0 win over Aston Villa before being substituted at half-time after a recurrence of the muscle spasms which forced him to miss training on Friday.

Chelsea coach Luiz Felipe Scolari admitted the Frenchman might struggle to be 100% fit for Les Bleus' game at the weekend, but has told the player to remain with the France squad for their friendly the following Wednesday against Tunisia.

"I don't know if he will play in national team for France or not because he feel a little pain in his leg and maybe for the first game it'll be difficult for him to play," he was quoted as saying in France Football.

"But he can stay in the France squad. He needs two, maybe three days rest and then maybe play the second game."

Saturday's game is a crucial one for France, as anything less than a win could signal the end of Raymond Domenech's reign in charge.

The controversiol coach was given the first three games of World Cup qualifying to prove himself following a disappointing campaign at Euro 2008.

Domenech bullish, duo out of squad

PARIS, Oct 9 (Reuters) - France coach Raymond Domenech said he felt in a combative mood ahead of a World Cup qualifier in Romania on Saturday that could cost him his job.

Domenech, who was left in charge but told he needed results after his team's group-stage exit from Euro 2008, knows a bad result in the Group Seven match in the Black Sea port of Constanta might spell the end of his tenure.

"The more complicated things get, the more I want to fight," the abrasive coach said in a video interview posted of the French Football Federation's (FFF) website.

"I wouldn't like anybody to think that I could let go and might feel like giving up," added Domenech, who has had a difficult relationship with some of his players and the media for years.

The 56-year-old, whose team began their qualifying campaign with a shock 3-1 defeat by Austria, earned himself a stay of execution with a 2-1 win over Serbia last month.

He realises, however, that he is not safe yet, FFF president Jean-Pierre Escalettes having said an assessment of the coach's position would be made after the Romania match.

The World Cup finalists know Romania can be tough to beat since finding no way through their tight defence in a goalless draw in their opening Euro 2008 match in June.

Like France, Romania have suffered since, being stunned 3-0 at home by group leaders Lithuania before struggling to beat the Faroe Islands 1-0 away in their first two qualifiers.

Romania are fifth in the group standings with three points, behind Serbia, Austria and France on goal difference. Lithuania are top on six points.

"We have to beat France if we want to keep alive our hopes to qualify," said Romania coach Victor Piturca, who has to deal with many injuries but welcomes back skipper Cristian Chivu and striker Adrian Mutu, although neither is in top form.

"It will be difficult. France is a strong team and I have to find solutions for several huge problems," said Piturca, who denied his job hung on this match, following media speculation.

"I won't leave even if we lose 10-0 against France, as the last chance to qualify won't have vaporised."

France coach Raymond Domenech has called up Jean-Alain Boumsong and Jimmy Briand as injury cover for William Gallas and Hatem Ben Arfa.

Arsenal captain Gallas has been forced to withdraw from the squad for the World Cup qualifier against Romania and a friendly match against Tunisia with a thigh injury, while there is sufficient concern over the fitness of Marseille's Ben Arfa to bring in Briand from Rennes.

Briand could also be required if Nicolas Anelka is unable to play. The Chelsea forward has been hampered by a muscular injury this week.
