Miyuki Torii stars in live-action "Rinshi!! Ekoda-chan"
Thu, December 23, 2010 (8:04pm EST)

Yukari Takinami's 4-panel manga "Rinshi!! Ekoda-chan" is being turned into a live-action drama series next year. The show will star comedian Miyuki Torii (29) in her first lead TV role.

Torii plays the titular character, a woman known as Ekoda-chan who spends her days working odd jobs, from clerk to telephone appointer to nude model to cabaret club hostess. Ekoda-chan has a habit of being in the nude at home, and she possesses a lax attitude when it comes to matters of the opposite sex. She is always at odds with the "birds of prey," a name she uses to refer to women who constantly try to attract men.

Although the manga normally runs in Kodansha's seinen magazine Afternoon, strips have also found popularity in various women's magazines.

The supporting cast includes Junko Emoto and Tomoharu Hasegawa. Torii will be singing the show's theme song under the Ekoda-chan name, with lyrics written by the original mangaka.

NTV plans to broadcast the series on Tuesday nights at 1:29am, beginning on January 11.

Translasi:

About the time I was in 3rd grade
I lived with my grandmother
My parent's house was next door but
I lived with my grandmother

Everyday I helped out
I even played gobang
But my grandmother said this to me
because I couldn't clean the toilet

My goodness, there's
a goddess at the toilet
that's why if you clean the toilet
You can become beautiful like the goddess

From that day on
I started making the toilet shine
I'll definitely become a beautiful woman
Every day I polished it

When we went out to go shopping
We both had roasted duck
My grandmother missed her new comedy show
and cried and blamed me

My goodness, there's
a goddess at the toilet
that's why if you clean the toilet
You can become beautiful like the goddess

I became an adult
and I bumped heads with grandma
I couldn't make a family
and I had no place to stay

I didn't return home on days off
I was out with my boyfriend
Both of us stopped playing
gobang and eating roasted duck

I wonder why people hurt others
and we lose things close to us
she was always by my side and I left her alone

It's been two years since I left for Tokyo
grandma is in the hospital
She's losing weight and got thin
I went to go see her

I said, "granny, I'm back!"
just like I used to
Even though we spoke a little bit
I said I'll come back and left the room

The next morning grandma
quietly fell asleep
it was just as if
she was waiting for me to come back
Even though she raised me properly
Even though I could repay her back
Even though I wasn't a good grandchild
She waited for me

My goodness, there's
a goddess at the toilet
that's why if you clean the toilet
You can become beautiful like the goddess

I had a dream to become
a wife in a good dispostion
today I'm going to
make the toilet shine alone

Grandma
Grandma
Thank you
Grandma
Thank you
from the bottom of my heart

Hiroki Narimiya portrays Yutaka Ozaki in biographical drama
Thu, January 6, 2011 (6:52pm EST)

http://nippop.com/uploads/assets ... 69Yutaka%20Ozaki%20(5).jpg

The life of singer-songwriter Yutaka Ozaki is being dramatized for television for the first time. Hiroki Narimiya (28) will play the role of Ozaki as part of a special drama and documentary project by digital broadcasting station BS Japan.

To commemorate BS Japan's 10th anniversary, the station is producing a mini-drama, tentatively titled "Kaze no Shonen ~ Ozaki Yutaka Eien no Densetsu." The show will be a portrayal of Ozaki's life, using an original screenplay based on a book by Akira Sudo, who was Ozaki's producer.

Ozaki made his debut as a singer in 1983 and became one of Japan's most popular artists, responsible for hits such as "I LOVE YOU," "Sotsugyou," and the posthumous "OH MY LITTLE GIRL." In 1992, the nation was shocked when Ozaki was found dead, at the young age of 26.

The drama will cover Ozaki's life from the age of 16, when he first met Sudo through an artist audition. The show is expected to air on TV Tokyo in late March.

In addition to the drama, BS Japan is producing a documentary program, which will include some footage of Ozaki that has never been released to the public before. That documentary will air on BS Japan on February 12.

Japan's First 3D Drama Series

A PR event was held in Tokyo yesterday for the country's first 3D TV drama series. "Tokyo Control," which focuses on the air traffic controllers who maintain order in the skies above the capital, will air on the Sukachan 3D169 cable/satellite channel from January 19. But perhaps in an indication of the experimental nature of 3D television or the show's production costs, it will air every other Wednesday night. It stars Kawahara Ayako (39) and 3D veteran Tokito Saburo (52), who appeared in last year's "The Last Message Umizaru," the last in a series of action movies about the Japan Coast Guard. At yesterday's event, Tokito joked, "I've established my position as the 3D actor guy. Using this opportunity, I've set up the Japan 3D Actors Association, with myself as the chairman!" He expressed his confidence in the new show by saying, "I think it's even better than Avatar."

On Thursday, NHK announced the subject and title of its 85th Asadora (morning drama) series, scheduled to begin airing this fall. The show will be titled "Carnation," based on the life of fashion designer Ayako Koshino.

The drama's heroine, based on Koshino, will be named Itoko Ohara. Auditions for the role will take place this month and next month, and the results will be revealed shortly after that.

Maki Horikita stars in drama based on Masashi Sada song
Sun, January 16, 2011 (6:55pm EST)

Maki Horikita (22) has been chosen to star in an upcoming Fuji TV drama special, tentatively titled "Kakashi." The drama is based on the 1977 song of the same name by Masashi Sada.

This is the third time in recent years that one of Sada's works has been adapted to television. In 2008, his novel "Bizan" was made into a drama starring Takako Tokiwa (after already being made into a movie with Nanako Matsushima). In 2009, his song "Oyaji no Ichiban Nagai Hi" also became a drama, starring Masami Nagasawa.

The original song "Kakashi" tells of a family whose daughter has left home to live far away in the city. For the drama, producers decided to model the characters after a family of udon makers from the Goto Islands, who were the subject of a documentary program that previously aired on Fuji TV.

Horikita plays the role of Chizuru Saeki, the second daughter of the family. After graduating from high school, she leaves the family's home in the Goto Islands to pursue a career as a photographer in Tokyo. While working as an assistant, she ends up involved in some trouble, and after becoming tired of life in Tokyo she returns home after three years.

The parents of the family will be played by Ken Matsudaira and Jun Fubuki. Sousuke Takaoka and Shuga Nakamura will play Chizuru's brothers, while Noriko Nakagoshi and Karen Miyama will play her sisters. Sada himself will make a guest appearance as the manager of a small bookshop.

"Kakashi" was filmed in early October last year. Fuji TV plans to broadcast the special sometime this March.

Takuya Kimura to star in TBS's "Nankyoku Tairiku"
Tue, January 18, 2011 (7:45pm EST)

Broadcaster TBS has announced that SMAP's Takuya Kimura (38) will star in a new drama series next fall, tentatively titled "Nankyoku Tairiku ~Kami no Ryouiki ni Idonda Otoko to Inu no Monogatari~." The show is being produced in commemoration of TBS's 60th anniversary, and it is said that it will have the biggest budget of any TBS drama series in history.

The series will focus on Japan's first Antarctic research expedition team, which consisted of 11 members and 19 Sakhalin Huskies. The team stayed at the Showa Base in Antarctica for over a year until 1958 when a second team came to take over, but extreme weather conditions forced the teams to completely retreat from the base, unfortunately leaving behind 15 of the Huskies. When one of the dog handlers returned in 1959 with a third team, it was discovered that two of the dogs, Taro and Jiro, had somehow managed to survive.

That expedition team was also the subject of the 1983 film "Nankyoku Monogatari," starring Ken Takakura (79). That movie earned approximately 11 billion yen, making it the second highest grossing live-action Japanese film in history after "Odoru Daisousasen: The Movie 2."

The drama will not be a remake of the film. Instead, it will be an original script inspired by the book "Nankyoku Ettoutai Taro Jiro no Shinjitsu" by Taiichi Kitamura.

Kimura plays the researcher Takeshi Kuramochi, the vice-leader of the team. His rival, the head weather observer Himuro, will be played by Masato Sakai (37). Teruyuki Kagawa (45) is playing the team leader, while Kyohei Shibata (59) is playing the overall person in charge of the expedition. Other team members will be played by Yusuke Yamamoto (23), Susumu Terajima (47), and Naoto Ogata (43).

Filming will start in February and last more than half a year. Scenes will be shot in Hokkaido, though TBS is also considering doing some filming in Antarctica. The series will begin airing in October in the Sunday 9:00pm time slot.

Ai Takahashi, Dori Sakurada co-star in "augmented reality" drama
Thu, January 20, 2011 (10:09am EST)

On Thursday, Morning Musume leader Ai Takahashi (24) attended a press conference for a new drama that she will star in. As this was her first time in front of the press since announcing her decision to graduate from Morning Musume, she also spoke about her plans for the future.

Takahashi's drama is part of a project called "Koi Choco," a collaboration between BS-TBS and candy company Morinaga Seika's Carre de Chocolat brand. The project will make use of an "augmented reality" application available on Android phones. When users take a photo of a package of the chocolate, a video clip from the drama will play.

The chocolate comes in four different flavors, and each of the four packages will be linked to a different video. There are two stories, titled "Bittersweet Angel" and "Amadan."

In "Bittersweet Angel," Takahashi will play Ayana, a cafe worker who is clumsy in love, while Dori Sakurada (19) will co-star as a young man named Anju who appears before her, calling himself an angel. The same story will be told from each of their perspectives, with "Ayana no Baai" lasting about 13 minutes in length and "Anju no Baai" lasting about 14 minutes in length.

The two parts of "Bittersweet Angel" will also be broadcast by BS-TBS on Valentine's Day (February 14) at 7:30pm. The drama and a making-of will be included on a DVD to be released on March 30.

"Bittersweet Angel" already became available on Thursday through the Android augmented reality application, along with the two parts of "Amadan," titled "Melodrama-hen" and "Seibugeki-hen." Details about "Amadan" have not been reported.

During the press conference, Takahashi stated that after taking on several acting roles, she has developed an interest in acting and wants to try taking on a variety of roles in the future. She also revealed that she is interested in going overseas, so she also hopes to do some language studies.

Thu, January 20, 2011 (5:37pm EST)

The popular drama series "3 Nen B Gumi Kinpachi Sensei" will come to a conclusion this March with a final special episode. The show, which stars Tetsuya Takeda (61) as a junior high school teacher, has had a total of 8 seasons since 1979, with the last one in 2007-2008. The show is known for covering a wide range of real-life problems, such as teenage pregnancy, bullying, gender identity disorder, and drugs. Over the show's 8 seasons, Takeda's character "Kinpachi-sensei" has guided approximately 240 students to graduation.
