Mini-laptops do away with textbooks
By : Arman Ahmad
2008/12/02
Nor Aisyah Nor Ahmadi and Wan Izzuddin Wan Ahmad Nizam seemed pleased as punch with their mini-laptop. |
KUALA LUMPUR: There will no longer be heavy school bags for Terengganu students to lug around once the state goverment replaces their hefty textbooks with mini-laptop.

Under an e-book programme which will start from early next year, students throughout the state will eventually discard their textbooks for virtual textbooks stored on Intel-powered Classmate PCs.
Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said said yesterday the project was aimed at giving ICT exposure to students as well as to lighten their schoolbags.
"The programme will start with 25,000 laptops which will be given to Year 5 students throughout the state.
"Eventually, all students in the state will be given laptops, and perhaps even those studying in universities."
Said was speaking yesterday at the signing of the MoU between the state government, Intel Malaysia and Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka here.
He said that in order to supply the laptops, the state government would build a factory to assemble laptops.
"The factory will be built at a cost of RM8.5 million.
"It will start operations in February next year."
The first batch of laptops is expected to be delivered to the students some time in April or May. The factory will have a capacity of 10,000 laptops per month.
Said added that the state government would have a budget of about RM35 million per year to provide the laptops to the students.
He added that Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka would provide the digital textbooks to be installed in the laptops.
Each laptop is powered by an Intel Atom processor and 512MB of Ram and a 4GB hard disk and will be sold to the state government at a cost of RM999, inclusive of digital textbooks prepared by DPB and a one-year warranty.
The laptops will be given in stages to the students.
In order to provide support for the introduction of the laptops, 500 unemployed graduates would be placed in schools to help with the programme.
