Shinji Higuchi directing monster drama "MM9"
Sun, May 30, 2010 (12:19pm EDT)
It was revealed last week that movie director Shinji Higuchi ("The Hidden Fortress," "Japan Sinks") has been placed in charge of his first television drama. Titled "MM9 -MONSTER MAGNITUDE-," the show is based on a sci-fi novel by sci-fi writer Hiroshi Yamamoto.
In the alternate reality of "MM9," monster attacks are a common occurrence in Japan. A special division of the Japan Meteorological Agency has been established to predict such attacks, as well as support the Japan Self-Defense Forces and minimize the damage from the attacks. The drama depicts the everyday lives of the unsung heroes working in the division.
Higuchi is well-known as a special effects director, having worked on the Heisei-era "Gamera" film trilogy. That trilogy's screenwriter, Kazunori Ito, has also been recruited for the "MM9" drama. While Higuchi is serving as the general director for the series, he is also personally directing three of the episodes. The other ten episodes have been split among directors Tomoyuki Furumaya, Ataru Oikawa, Takuma Tosaka, and Kiyotaka Taguchi.
Anna Ishibashi (17) and Machiko Ono (28) are co-starring in the show, respectively playing a rookie member of the special division and the member in charge of her training. The supporting cast includes Issei Takahashi, Yasuhi Nakamura, Satoru Matsuo, Sarutoki Minagawa, Takako Kato, and Yutaka Matsushige.
"MM9" is being produced by MBS and will air on Wednesday nights (1:30am), starting on July 7. It has also been announced that MBS is teaming up with King Records to make the series available to iPad users in Japan, offering each episode for free digitally on the same day that it airs on television.

TOKYO —
Yoshino Kimura, 34, will be playing the lead role in an upcoming TV Asahi drama that will start in July. The drama, tentatively titled “Keisatsucho Keizoku Sosahan,” will focus on a hot-blooded female detective who specializes in unsolved brutal crimes.
Kimura has already played a clumsy detective in “Onna Keiji - Otomichi Takako,” a program that began in January. Her upcoming role will be a character named Manami Kishi, a detective who is lacking in womanly charms but is cool, clever and skilled at solving crimes.
The actress said, “There’s not a day when we don’t hear news of a murder, and for every murder there’s a family who has had a loss. It’s probably extremely difficult to get rid of that sadness. My character works to relieve victims’ families of any regrets that they might have.”

"JIN" sequel slated for spring 2011
Mon, June 7, 2010 (6:41pm EDT)
The popular, award-winning drama series "JIN" is officially getting a sequel, scheduled for spring 2011. Takao Osawa (42) will reprise his starring role, along with other main cast members including Haruka Ayase (25), Masaaki Uchino (41), and Miki Nakatani (34).
Based on a manga by Motoka Murakami about a brain surgeon who gets sent back in time to the Bakumatsu era, "JIN" originally aired last fall. The series averaged over a 19% rating, with the final episode reaching 25.3%, the highest for any drama series on a commercial network last year.
Osawa commented that he was concerned about the sequel being a retread of the first series. However, the new series is said to be a step up in terms of scale and intensity. One of the highlights will be the assassination of Sakamoto Ryoma (Uchino) and whether the surgeon Jin (Osawa) can save him. New characters being introduced include Nakaoka Shintaro and the samurai Saigo Takamori.
Rumors surfaced earlier this month that Osawa and Ayase are in a relationship, but both of their agencies have denied it. As a result, the series will be receiving extra attention from fans and the media, especially since their characters in the drama are romantic interests.
The show's producer stated that this will be the conclusion of the drama and that there will be no movie version.

NHK Drama Takes Monaco Prize
An NHK drama has taken a top prize at the 50th Monte Carlo Television Festival. The drama was made by NHK Hiroshima and was filmed against the beautiful backdrop of the Seto Inland Sea. It tells the story of Murata, a successful but gruff novelist, who has moved back to his small native island after a playboy youth in Tokyo. But even a decade later, his only social connection is with his pet, a large goldfish. That is until a young female editor comes from Tokyo to collect his manuscripts.

Takeshi Kitano, Sou Kuramoto team up for drama special "Kikoku"
Mon, June 14, 2010 (7:13pm EDT)
Talento Takeshi Kitano (63) and screenwriter Sou Kuramoto (75) are teaming up for a TBS drama special that will air this August. Titled "Kikoku," the drama will star Kitano and feature a cast of big names, including Shun Oguri (27) and Maki Horikita (21).
"Kikoku" is based on the 1955 short story "Saipan Kara Kita Ressha," written by the late author Hiroshi Muneta. Kuramoto originally adapted it last year for a theatrical version, but he is writing a new script for the drama.
The fantasy story starts when a unscheduled train arrives at Tokyo Station, carrying the ghosts of a group of soldiers who died honorably during World War II and dropping them off in present-day Tokyo. Kitano plays one of the soldiers, a private first class, who visits his younger sister, but he becomes violent upon witnessing her current misery.
Oguri plays a former musician who was sent to war, leaving behind his girlfriend Yoko (played by Horikita). When he returns to see her, 60 years have already passed. Kaoru Yachigusa will play the older Yoko.
Other cast members include Takashi Tsukamoto, Osamu Mukai, Yoichi Nukumizu, Yuya Endo, Katsuhisa Namase, ARATA, and Koji Ishizaka. TBS plans to air the drama on August 14, the day before the anniversary of Japan's surrender.

Fujifabric's first drama theme
Thu, June 17, 2010 (11:31am EDT)
http://img44.imageshack.us/img44/2669/fujifabrictop.jpg
The band Fujifabric has a new song titled "Yoake no BEAT," their first to be used as the theme song for a television drama. It will appear in TV Tokyo's upcoming "Moteki," an adaptation of Mitsuro Kubo's manga of the same name that stars actor Mirai Moriyama (25).
http://www.s-woman.net/moriyama-mirai/image/ph01_1.jpg
"Yoake no BEAT" is being included on the band's next album, titled "MUSIC." After the sudden death of vocalist/guitarist Masahiko Shimura last December, the other three members of the band (plus Tokyo Jihen's Toshiki Hata as support drummer) completed the album using the lyrics, songs, and recordings that Shimura left behind.
Fujifabric has not put out a release since their album "CHRONICLE" in May 2009. Although "MUSIC" goes on sale on July 28, fans will be able to get "Yoake no BEAT" as a chaku-uta on June 18 only (a 24-hour window).
