Mak makes peace with Tan to start afresh as a doubles pair
KUALA LUMPUR: Doubles shuttler Mak Hee Chun has buried the hatchet with Tan Wee Kiong as they want give it a second shot as a pair.
After half a year playing with different partners, Hee Chun-Wee Kiong are competing at the ongoing Selangor Open at the Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara. They will then see action at the All-England in Birmingham from March 6-11.
Although their partnership is only temporary, Hee Chun is not taking it lightly.
He wants to rediscover the form that propelled them to world No. 21 before the cracks in their combination appeared after a poor outing at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, where they blamed each other for the failure.
The coaches tried to restore the order in their play by fielding them in three international tournaments last year – the All-England, Swiss and Singapore Opens – but they failed to mend their differences and fell flat on all three occasions.
National coach Tan Kim Her is experimenting with several pairs and will decide on his final line-up after the London Olympics.
Hee Chun said he had made his peace with Wee Kiong.
“Yes, we were not on talking terms for a while but that’s all in the past. Our coaches have asked us to play together again and we have worked out our differences. We will give it another shot,” said Hee Chun.
After their split, Hee Chun partnered senior Ong Son Hock while Wee Kiong combined with two-time world junior champion Ow Yao Han.
“I’n now focussed on improving my game and getting good results for the country.”
Hee Chun also wants to make amends for crashing out in the first round of the All-England with Wee Kiong last year.
Hee Chun-Wee Kiong have to play in the qualifying tournament where they take on Denmark’s much improved pair, Rasmus Bonde-Anders Kristiansen, in the first round.
If they prevail, compatriots and former internationals Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif await them.
Should Hee Chun-Wee Kiong make the main draw, they have Germans Michael Fuchs-Oliver Roth for company.
“Our first challenge is to get past the qualifying tournament. We have been training well together and hopefully, we can break into the main draw,” said Hee Chun.
Hee Chun-Wee Kiong are in the same half with top seeds Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng of China, Indonesians Mohd Ahsan-Bona Septano, South Koreans Ko Sung-hyun-Yoo Yeon-seong and Japan’s Hirokatsu Hashimoto-Noriyasu Hirata.
In the lower half are second seeds Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung of South Korea, Malaysia’s Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, China’s Chai Biao-Guo Zhengdong and Denmark’s Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen.
For now, Hee Chun-Wee Kiong can test their combination at the Selangor Open and show their doubters they can still hit it off.
