PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MEA) will begin operations on Nov 30, with an initial focus on the Straits of Malacca.
Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the agency would start with 500 personnel, a fraction of the 4,035 posts which have been approved for it.
The deputy prime minister and defence minister said it would guard one fifth of the 250 nautical mile zone placed under its jurisdiction.
揟he agency抯 steering committee has also asked the navy, police and other agencies to determine which area along the Malacca Straits needs attention.
LOOKING GOOD: Najib taking a closer look at the different uniforms for the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency officers and personnel at the agency抯 soft launch in Putrajaya.
揑n due course, the agency抯 responsibilities will grow, and its facilities and staff numbers will be expanded to full capacity to ensure effectiveness.
揥e have to acknowledge that the agency is new and has limited personnel, assets and experience.
揝o, the agency will have to give full attention to crucial areas in the initial stage to be effective, |

Malaysia looks to lease another two A109s
The Malaysian army has agreed to lease another two A109s from AgustaWestland to help with pilot training for its new army fleet of 11 A109LOH light observation helicopters, the first of which will be delivered next month. DRB-Hicom subsidiary Deftech will buy the aircraft and provide instructor pilots for operations over a three- to five-year lease period to start next April.
Malaysia last year selected Deftech to maintain its purchased A109s (Flight International, 20-26 July 2004). The company plans to open a service centre at Kuala Lumpur抯 Subang airport this month and a second facility in western Malaysia next July.
AgustaWestland was contracted to provide initial operational training on the A109 and army pilots will be put through a two-month course in Italy starting in December. Malaysia抯 Aviation Academy Integrated Training and Services will, meanwhile, provide ab initio training using fixed-wing trainers and Eurocopter EC120s.
Malaysia抯 first army A109LOH will be shipped to the country in late November to arrive before the Langkawi air show in early December.
Its second aircraft will initially remain in Italy for operational training, with the third to be delivered in December and the remainder to arrive by mid-2006. |

Muslim dakwa dua pemimpin PTCM tamak
KUALA LUMPUR: Ketua Turus Umum Pasukan Tindakan Cemas Malaysia (PTCM), Muslim Yaakob, semalam mendakwa dua bekas ahli Lembaga Amanah PTCM tamak dan mudah dihasut.

Novel housing deal that went awry
Nation
Monday October 17, 2005
BY LOURDES CHARLES
KUALA LUMPUR: It was supposed to be an ingenious way to build housing for the police to resolve its accommodation problems in Kedah.
Transfer three pieces of prime police land to a private developer for him to develop and sell, and in return, the developer was to build police stations and living quarters for the police.
However, the 2002 deal has turned sour.
While the developer has completed his commercial project on prime police land worth RM110mil, the quarters and police stations remain incomplete.
The developer is now under investigation by the police for failing to keep his end of the bargain. It is learnt that the developer who took over and developed the police land for a commercial housing project failed to complete two of the three projects earmarked by the Government in the Pendang and Yan districts as stated in the deal.
Sources said the developer had allegedly raked in millions of ringgit in profit from the sale of houses built on the police land transferred to him. They said the developer started construction work in another district, Kuala Muda, in 2003 although the agreement was signed the previous year.
Work on the Pendang project started in 2004 but it was abandoned shortly after.
Financial constraints including not being able to obtain bank loans were cited as the reason.
The sources also said the developer claimed that the cost of building the police stations and housing quarters had escalated.
Federal commercial crimes director Commissioner Datuk Hairuddin Mohamed confirmed they were investigating the developer following a report lodged by a senior police officer from the logistics department recently.
Sources familiar with the investigations said several people including police officers, Internal Security Ministry officials and the developer would be quizzed.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Musa Hassan said police would conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.
揥e're not happy with the way things have turned out as our officers and men are still in their old and cramped quarters. |
