Can I have a try at explaining gerund?
Gerund is a verb with -ing. It functions as a noun. It is NOT a verb.
Examples as gerund are as follows:
Swimming might help you lose some weight.
They do not appreciate my singing.
My son's favourite activity is painting.
Police arrested him for swindling company's fund.
To check if the word is a gerund, one can always replace it with a noun. Example:
Swimming might help you lose some weight.
The latest diet programme might help you lose some weight.
They do not appreciate my singing.
They do not appreciate my presentation.
My son's favourite activity is painting.
My son's favourite drink is Pepsi.
Police arrested him for swindling company's fund.
Police arrested him for murder.
The gerund also comes after a preposition:
They're keen on skateboarding.
The suspect avoided the police by driving through the forest.
Can you draw a straight line without opening your eyes?
There's no point in waiting.
Can I have a try at explaining gerund?
There's more on gerund, but these are the basic ruleswhich might give you some ideas on what a "gerund" is.
Hopefully this helps... would welcome any questions (I hope this is ok, dexa... I've not taught English for some years now ...a bit rusty I'm afraid )
