Liverpoolcaptain Gerrard, who is currently injured, forged a good understandingwith Alonso in midfield and paid him perhaps the biggest compliment bysuggesting Alonso's absence has been the "difference in us from lastyear".
Alonso moved on to Real Madrid in the summer, since whenLiverpool have struggled for form in the Premier League and ChampionsLeague. It was a move which hit Gerrard hard.

"Devastated, yeah. Devastated. But there was nothing I could do about it,'' he told FourFourTwomagazine. "Xabi said a long time ago that he wanted another chapter inhis career and finally he got it and his team-mates and the coachescouldn't stand in his way. We just have to say thanks and move forwardwithout him.''
Liverpool recouped around £30million for 27-year-old Alonso, and spent most of that on bringing replacement Alberto Aquilanito Anfield from Roma. Aquilani missed the first two months of theseason due to injury and Liverpool have already lost seven matches.

Gerrardknew it would take Liverpool time to adapt to life without Alonso, whoin a deep-lying playmaker role had a vital duty in Benitez's team.

Gerrardsaid: "It's always going to be different when you lose one of the bestplayers in the world - and people are finally realising that's what heis, on the back of his form for Real Madrid and the difference in usfrom last year.
"We've got other midfielders here doing a goodjob but it will take a while before Alonso's out of our system becausehe was such a top player.''

Fernando Torres will carry the hopes of injury-stricken Liverpool on his shoulders on Wednesday night, with boss Rafael Benitez praying his gamble to play the striker despite his hernia problem pays off.

Liverpool face group E leaders Lyon in the Stade Gerland knowing that only a victory will keep alive any realistic hopes of staying in the Champions League this season.

Benitez has been trying to limit Torres' game time to have him ready for this crucial match. Benitez's decision to substitute Torres off midway through the second half of the Premier League match with Fulham proved costly as Liverpool lost, adding to the pressure for Torres to resuscitate their sinking Champions League hopes in Lyon.

Torres will start the match and so too could Italian midfielder Alberto Aquilani. Liverpool are without Steven Gerrard, Martin Skrtel, Fabio Aurelio, Albert Riera and Glen Johnson. Centre-back Daniel Agger will face a late test on a back injury, and Liverpool could well have teenage full-back Stephen Darby in the side.

Benitez said: "Fernando is improving, we do not want him to have an operation so we are managing his fitness carefully. But he is getting better. He had some pain after he played, and scored, against Manchester United.

"But he was better after the Fulham game at the weekend, although he could still feel something wrong. I hope that he will be even better for this match. I said recently that 80 per cent of Fernando can win matches, I hope that is the case again.''

Sevilla dan Lyon mara, Liverpool makin tenat


PARIS: Gergasi Liga Perdana Inggeris, Liverpool semakin hampir tersingkir dari Liga Juara-Juara selepas seri 1-1 dengan Lyon awal pagi tadi.

Keputusan seri itu membolehkan Lyon mara ke pusingan kalah mati.

Lyon diiringi Sevilla yang diikat 1-1 oleh VfB Stuttgart tetapi memastikan kesudahan dua tempat teratas dalam kumpulan mereka apabila Rangers seri dengan Unirea Urziceni.

Cengkaman Barcelona terhadap trofi yang dimenang tahun lalu pula semakin longgar apabila mereka diikat 0-0 oleh juara Rusia, Rubin Kazan.

Sebaliknya, kebangkitan lewat Inter Milan untuk menang 2-1 ke atas Dynamo Kiev di Ukraine membolehkan pasukann Itali itu menduduki tangga teratas dalam persaingan sengit kumpulan itu.

Jika Barcelona dan Kazan berakhir dengan berkongsi tempat kedua, pasukan Rusia itu akan mara berdasarkan keputusan antara mereka.

Liverpool menguasai separuh masa pertama ke atas juara Perancis sebanyak tujuh kali dengan Fernando Torres, Dirk Kuyt dan Andriy Voronin hampir menemui gawang.

Liverpool kelihatan akan meraih tiga mata penuh apabila Ryan Babel merembat masuk gol pada lewat permainanan sebelum Lyon menambah derita mereka apabila Lisandro Lopez menyamakan kedudukan di minit akhir.

Kemenangan 5-2 Fiorentina ke atas Debrecen di tempat sendiri - yang bermula dengan gol awal Adrian Mutu - benar-benar menggugat Liverpool.
