Toons mahu balik Carroll

"Dia sedang melalui satu proses peralihan.

- AGENSI

Player Ratings: Blackburn 0-2 Newcastle

Magpies secure away win with strong defensive display, as Dann own goal and late Obertan strike seals all three points

Newcastle United

Tim Krul     Top of the Match    8.0

Was called in to action a few times but didn’t have a shot to actually save until the last few minutes of the first half when he made a great penalty stop from Dunn to keep his side ahead. He dived full length to his left to deny the midfielders spot kick, and also was able to stop a follow up shot from close range.

Fabricio Coloccini   7.0
The Newcastle captain stuck very close to Modeste but struggled at times to stay with the runs of the striker. In the air he was dominant and remained resolute despite second half pressure from the home side. He was lucky not have his name taken after half an hour though as he brought down Hoilett on the edge of the penalty area, the winger having too much pace for the Argentine.

Davide Santon   6.5
The Italian is a stylish left back and he always looks to play neat balls out of defence when perhaps he should have cleared any danger with a big clearance. He handled Pedersen well and when Formica was introduced he stayed close to him and hardly gave him a kick.

Danny Simpson   6.5
The full back had a busy evening against the impressive Hoilett but Simpson is hardly short of pace himself and was able to keep the winger away from the danger zones. He was harshly adjudged to have fouled Modeste inside the area in the closing minutes of the first half but luckily for him Krul made a fantastic save from Dunn’s spot kick.

Mike Williamson   7.0
The runs of Dunn and Hoilett to support Modeste caused the defender a few problems but in general he was able to cope. He looked better challenging in the air than when someone was running at him but he stood up well and didn’t dive in to any challenges.

Ryan Taylor    6.5
He began the game in central midfield and his ability to spread the ball really benefited the visiting side. It was his speculative effort that was deflected off Dann to give his side the victory. He moved the right side of midfield in the second half and gave his side a few more defensive options than Ben Arfa had done.

Danny Guthrie   7.0
He covered a lot of ground in the middle of the pitch as he worked hard to get his side on the ball and create chances to further extend their lead. He had a good battle with Nzonzi which was very even and both men can be happy with their performances.

Hatem Ben Arfa     Flop of the Match     5.0
The Frenchman is very neat and skilful on the ball but on too many occasions he tried to do too much on the ball and gave away possession too easily. His first half performance clearly did not impress his manager though who sent on Perch to replace him for the second half.

Jonás Gutiérrez   6.0
An indifferent game for the winger, he struggled up against Lowe on the left wing so moved across to the right but found Olsson in just as good form. He returned to the left side in the second half but rarely created anything for Best and Ameobi to feed off.

Leon Best   6.5
He made some good runs but never really tested the Blackburn defence, although he did have very little in the way of service to enable him to test Robinson. He was replaced by Lovenkrands in the second half.

Shola Ameob   6.0
The forward looked short of match fitness and often found himself performing defensive duties instead of attacking ones as Blackburn launched balls into their penalty area. He didn’t have a sight of goal at all during the game but again a lack of service hampered his progress.

• Substitutions
James Perch   6.5
Replaced Ben Arfa at half time and gave the visitors much more steel in the centre of the pitch alongside Guthrie.

Peter Lovenkrands   6.0
Replaced Best but had little impact.

Gabriel Obertan   7.0
Replaced Taylor in the closing minutes and added a second goal in injury time.

Newcastle 2-1 Aston Villa: Papiss Cisse scores winner on dream debut to move hosts back above Arsenal

Fantastic strike from Senegalese striker helps to push Toon Army up the table, but it's not all good news for the home side as Ryan Taylor and Leon Best are subbed with injuries.

Newcastle leapfrogged Arsenal in the Premier League with a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa thanks to goals from their Senegalese strike duo Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse either side of a Robbie Keane equaliser.

Ba opened the scoring in the 30th minute from close range before Keane's equaliser just before half-time. Cisse, however, found the winner in the 72nd minute with an absolutely stunning half-volley from the edge of the area to propel the Toon Army into fifth position in the league.

The hosts welcomed back fan favourite Ba to the starting lineup in place of Shola Ameobi, while new signing Cisse had to be content with a place on the bench.

The return of the Senegalese frontman was one of two changes made by Alan Pardew with James Perch also replacing Hatem Ben Arfa.

Villa, meanwhile, were unchanged from the side that drew against QPR in midweek, with three former Newcastle players in the starting XI, as Shay Given, Steven Ireland and Charles N'Zogbia lined up against their former employers.

After an initially quiet opening, the first real action came when Leon Best strode towards goal with the ball. His shot was well blocked by Stephen Warnock, but in the process Best jarred his knee joint and was unable to continue.

While the hosts were down to 10 men, Tim Krul was forced into his first action of the game when Keane expertly found Darren Bent inside the box. The in-form striker took a touch and shot, but his effort was well blocked by Krul.

Newcastle didn't fully clear, and Stilyan Petrov had a long range effort that the Dutch 'keeper snaffled up at the second attempt.

Then came a big moment for much of St. James' Park with the arrival of Cisse to a big ovation from the home faithful.

His first effort came moments later, directing a header towards Given's goal, but it was a comfortable save for the Irish goalkeeper.

Warnock looked to take a nasty knock to the face after he clashed heads with Ryan Taylor, but after receiving some treatment he was ok to continue.

Krul was soon called into action again, as he made another save from Bent following a good through ball from Richard Dunne.

But just before the half hour mark, the home side took the lead through a very likely source.

Villa failed to clear Danny Guthrie's cross and after Taylor's effort was charged down by Warnock, the ball fell to Demba Ba six yards out, who kept his cool and slotted the ball past Given with Dunne on the line.

It was to be the last involvement for Taylor, however, who had to leave the pitch on a stretcher following the challenege from Warnock. He was replaced by Gabriel Obertan, who had an immediate impact in defence, stopping a promising looking attack from Keane.

Villa were the next side to go close as Ireland hit a curling effort just wide of Krul's right post, before Cisse threatened twice more with his head, placing a header just wide before flicking one just over Given's bar.

But in the fifth minute of six added on to the first half, Keane found an equaliser for Villa. The Irishman found N'Zogbia, who went on a good surging run to the byline before crossing for the striker to find the net from close range and bring the opening half to a close.

Dream Debut | Cisse lashes home a stunning winner on his first appearance

The beginning of the secind half was an altogether more cagey affair, with Guthrie and Obertan both blazing shots wildly over.

The first real chance of the second half came to Cisse, whose free header was directed over from just outside the six-yard-box after Guthrie's cross.

Villa did begin to get into the second half as it wore on, but went behind in the 72nd minute thanks to an unbelievable drive from Cisse.

The Senegalese striker chested down a cross from Jonas Gutierrez, before drilling the ball high into the top corner with his left foot. There was a touch of fortune about the goal, a real swing and hope effort with his left foot, but it was unstoppable from the striker.

For Villa, it was a cruel time to concede, just as they had been threatening, but the defending of Gutierrez's cross was far from the best, and for the second time in a week they had conceded a goal to a Cisse on his debut, after Djibril's effort for QPR on Wednesday.

Villa were really threatening in the closing stages, with substitute Gary Gardener coming close, but his header was straight at Krul. The goalkeeper parried the effort into the air, but it dropped straight into his welcoming arms with Emile Heskey close to getting a touch on the ball.

Newcastle held strong, however, to grab a vital three points and maintain their surprise challenge for a top four place.

Cartoon of the Day: Cisse at the double as Pardew hits the jackpot

This time last year, Newcastle United were struggling for goals in the wake of Andy Carroll's £35 million departure to Liverpool, but 2011-12 has been a different story. It was Demba Ba who won all the plaudits in the first part of the season, but January changed all that, as a certain Senegalese striker named Papiss Cisse arrived at St James' Park from Freiburg for a significantly lesser fee than was received for the much-derided England striker.

And Cisse hasn't looked back since, scoring the winner on his debut against Aston Villa. While Ba has struggled to replicate his early form following the Africa Cup of Nations, his countryman has continued to rake in the goals. His most recent double against Swansea meant he has now scored more than once a game - nine in eight matches - delighting manager Alan Pardew and leaving Harry Redknapp and Arsene Wenger to ponder what could have been ...

It's goals galore!
