Work B**ch!' is headed for a lofty launch on next week's chart. And, while radio is excited about the track's potential, programmers concerned about the song's title and lyrics are playing an edited version

One more time, Britney Spears has caused a circus-like frenzy ahead of a new album.

"Work B**ch!" introduces Spears' eighth studio set, due Dec. 3. While the track is off to a fast start at radio, its title and lyrics are causing some programmers concern, leading to airplay for a label-issued lyrically-edited version.

Still, look for the track to storm the Billboard Hot 100 next week following its first full week of sales, streaming and airplay. (It debuts this week on Dance/Electronic Songs at No. 16 due largely to early airplay.) Industry sources forecast "Work" to sell 175,000 downloads by the end of the tracking week on Sunday (Sept. 22). Such a sales sum would likely lead to a top 20 Hot 100 bow, with a top 10 start a possibility depending on the song's finalized sales total, as well as its first-full week of airplay and streaming.

Check Billboard.com on Wednesday (25) for highlights of next week's Hot 100, including where "Work" will arrive.

This week, in addition to its entrance on Dance/Electronic Songs, "Work" enters Radio Songs at No. 69. It begins after slightly more than two days of airplay with 16 million audience impressions, according to Nielsen BDS. The song is in line to launch in the top 25 of the Pop Songs chart, highlights of which will post Monday (23) on Billboard.com. (Aiding its start, participating Clear Channel-owned chart reporters played "Work" hourly on Monday).

While BDS data backs that pop radio is clearly excited to spotlight a new Spears song, its lyrical content is causing PDS considerable thought. RCA Records has serviced stations with two versions: the original "Work B**ch!" and a seemingly safer "Work Work" edit. RCA executive VP/GM Joe Riccitelli says that so far, "It feels like a 50/50 split" as to what version stations are deciding to play.

Pop program directors back up Riccitelli's assessment.

"Britney, can you please put out a record out without the word 'bitch' in it?" pleads KHHM Sacramento, Calif., PD Pattie Moreno. "Please, can you help a girl out?"

Still, says Moreno, who's programming the "Work Work" edit, "Listeners are over-the-top excited about this song."

WPST Philadelphia is also playing the "Work Work" version. "We even got an official intro to play before the song with Britney saying 'Work Work,' " notes PD Dave McKay.

McKay recalls past songs like Meredith Brooks' 1997 No. 2 Hot 100 hit "Bitch" and Elton John's 1974 No. 4-peaking classic "The Bitch Is Back" and wonders if context plays a part in the song's acceptability on radio. It might be one thing for Brooks to self-deprecatingly refer to herself as the song's title, but another for Spears to use the term more accusatorily.

That it's pop radio also plays a factor. PDs are careful about content on a station that prides itself as one that mothers and daughters can listen to together. Conversely, at adult male-focused rock radio, for instance, Jet's "Cold Hard Bitch" or Godsmack's "Cryin' Like a Bitch!" aren't as jarring.

Not that all at pop radio are coming down on the side of caution.

WNOW New York PD Gillette is spinning the original version of "Work." "'Bitch' is not a dirty word," he says. "No complaints so far. Plus, it's a great dance track."

Ultimately, Gillette urges looking past the song's title to what he sees as a song with a valuable message.

"If you actually listen to the lyrics, it's motivational, even educational: there is no free lunch. If you want something, you have to work for it.

"So far, the listeners love it."

Miley Cyrus' 'Wrecking Ball' Spends Second Week Atop Hot 100

By Gary Trust, New York | September 25, 2013 1:46 PM EDT

The song narrowly holds off Katy Perry's former leader 'Roar,' which rises to No. 1 on Radio Songs. Lorde, meanwhile, tops Digital Songs with 'Royals' and Britney Spears' 'Work B**ch!' begins on the Hot 100 at No. 12

Miley Cyrus holds at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Wrecking Ball." The song wins a close race with Katy Perry's former two-week topper "Roar," which takes over atop the Radio Songs chart. Lorde, meanwhile, climbs to No. 1 on Digital Songs with "Royals," which remains at No. 3 on the Hot 100.

Let's look closer at the numbers for this week's top 10.

Last week, "Ball" bounded 22-1 on the Hot 100 as it soared 21-1 on Streaming Songs with a 1,565% gain to 36.5 million streams in the chart's tracking week, according to Nielsen BDS, following the song's Sept. 9 video premiere. This week, the ballad stays atop Streaming Songs but with a 61% loss to 14.3 million. "Ball" concurrently leads the subscription services-based On-Demand Songs chart for a second week with a 4% decrease to 2.7 million.

"Ball" drops 1-3 on Digital Songs with a 36% fall to 301,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan; last week, it rocketed 10-1 with 477,000, a 312% rise. Airplay, meanwhile, is building strongly for the track, as it flies 59-31 on Radio Songs with 38 million all-format audience impressions (up 90%), according to BDS.

While it reigns for a second frame, "Ball" deflates by 50% in overall Hot 100 chart points. As Perry's "Roar" (2-2) is down by 8%, the songs are separated by just 2% in points. Last week, "Ball" boasted an almost two-to-one points lead.

Still, "Roar" becomes Perry's sixth No. 1 on Radio Songs (2-1), charging ahead by 8% to 159 million. At seven weeks, it's her fastest-leaping leader, besting the nine-week flights of "E.T." (featuring Kanye West) and "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" "Roar" completes the quickest climb to No. 1 since fun.'s "We Are Young" (featuring Janelle Monae) also soared to the summit in seven frames (April 21, 2012).

"Roar" holds at No. 2 on Streaming Songs (7.3 million, down 19%) and Digital Songs (301,000, down 9%).

Perry additionally debuts on the Hot 100 at No. 17 with "Dark Horse" (featuring Juicy J), a preview song from her album "rism," due Oct. 22. It begins on Digital Songs at No. 4 (194,000).

Lorde's "Royals" ranks at No. 3 on the Hot 100 for a third week while jumping 3-1 on Digital Songs (307,000, up 17%). The 16-year-old New Zealander is the first solo female to send a debut entry to No. 1 on the sales tally since Carly Rae Jepsen ruled for eight weeks beginning last June with "Call Me Maybe." Ke$ha ("TiK ToK," 2010), Lady Gaga ("Just Dance," 2009) and Perry ("I Kissed a Girl," 2008) were the three prior women to dominate Digital Songs on their first tries.

"Royals" advances 6-4 on Streaming Songs (5.5 million, up 11%) and gains by 17% to pass the 100-million audience barrier (104 million), despite slipping 5-6 on Radio Songs. The track crowns

Alternative Songs for a seventh week, extending its mark as the longest-leading No. 1 by a lead female in the chart's 25-year history. "Royals" tops Hot Rock Songs for a fourth week and blasts into the Pop Songs top 10 (13-5).

Avicii's "Wake Me Up!" pushes 5-4 on the Hot 100. It's up by 12% in streaming (to 4.9 million) and 15% in airplay (to 101 million). The track heads up Dance/Electronic Songs for a third week.

Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" (featuring T.I. and Pharrell) descends 4-5 on the Hot 100, ceding the top spot on Radio Songs (1-2) to "Roar" after an 11-week command (152 million, down 13%). Still, it leads R&B Songs for a 19th week and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for a 16th frame.

Jay Z's "Holy Grail" (featuring Justin Timberlake) holds at No. 6 on the Hot 100, despite lifting by 6% in airplay to 124 million. It rules Rap Songs for an eighth week.

Drake's "Hold On, We're Going Home" (featuring Majid Jordan) reaches a new peak on the Hot 100 (8-7), claiming top Airplay Gainer honors as it pounces 8-5 on Radio Songs (106 million, up 22%). It also gains on Digital Songs (8-8; 150,000, up 4%) and Streaming Songs (15-12; 3.1 million, up 10%).

Lady Gaga's "Applause" dips 7-8 on the Hot 100 but roars to the Radio Songs top 10 (18-9; 73 million, up 23%). The lead single from "ARTPOP," due Nov. 11, is her 10th top 10 on the airplay tally.

Lana Del Rey & Cedric Gervais' No. 6-peaking "Summertime Sadness" rebounds 10-9 on the Hot 100, aided by a 7% gain in airplay (to 94 million), while Capital Cities' "Safe and Sound," which rose to No. 8 four weeks ago, returns to the top 10 (12-10).

As projected last week, Britney Spears soars onto the Hot 100 at No. 12 with "Work B**ch!" The lead single from her eighth studio set, due Dec. 3, launches at No. 6 on Digital Songs (174,000) and No. 28 on Streaming Songs (1.8 million), while climbing 69-58 in its second week on Radio Songs (21 million, up 31% in its first full week of airplay).

Visit Billboard.com tomorrow (Sept. 26), when all rankings, including the Hot 100 in its entirety and Digital Songs, Radio Songs, Streaming Songs and On-Demand Songs will be refreshed, as they are each Thursday. The latest charts will also appear in the next issue of Billboard magazine (on sale on Friday, Sept. 27).

Work Bitch director talks about the video
ritney’s upcoming “Work Bitch” music video is coming for weaves, and director Ben Mor thinks The Army will be “floored” once they see it.
“You’re gonna get to see a lot of Britney that you haven’t seen in a long time,” Mor tells MTV.com. “A lot of different wardrobe changes, a lot of different setups. It’s one of the more ambitious Britney videos in a while, I guess.”

Britney filmed part of the video in Death Valley, a source tells BreatheHeavy.com.

“I think there’s a few varied locations. There’s a desert exterior, daytime location. There’s another very unique location that involves water and just really beautiful architectural pieces,” he said. “I won’t reveal too much but [there's] a unique location that I’m excited to share. Then you have a kind of really modern interior, like house, like sleek interior that serves as the hero dance routine location, even though she dances in most all of the locations,” he added. “And then there’s a lot of good cutaways, more intimate type cutaways within those locations.”

Britney loves a good story line in a music video, but this time around it’s more of a general “theme … rather than a narrative,” he said. “This one is basically [saying] ‘The queen is back and she’s about to show all these bitches how it’s done.’ It’s her being really fierce and taking back her throne in a way.”
