Beyonce and Jay-Z Trademark the ‘Blue Ivy Carter’ Name Beyonce and Jay Z are nothing if not uber-parents: while most new moms and dads adjust to the job by calling in help from family and friends and getting strategic about mundane things like taking naps, the superstar couple is already taking legal action to protect their newborn daughter. The pair has just submitted an application to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to trademark the name "Blue Ivy Carter." Even though the move could allow Beyonce and Jay Z to later capitalize on the public's interest in their personal lives and their child by producing lines of Blue Ivy-themed gear, it's more likely that the couple's trying to prevent others from exploiting the name and using it on the marketplace. Even though Blue Ivy is just barely out of the womb, there have already been two other attempts to register the name—one by designer Joseph Mbeh. Both were denied; Beyonce and Jay Z's application is still pending, but will probably be approved. Anyway, I'm hoping that the name trademark will discourage other parents from copying the "Blue Ivy" name. I don't think I could tolerate a crop of Blue Ivys entering the workforce and public life 25 years down the line.
