With the first half of 2011 coming to an end, ORICON STYLE has released the results of the poll that asked, “Which actor had their big break in the first half of 2011?”.

First place went to Mukai Osamu after starring in the NHK morning drama ‘Gege no Nyoubo‘, along with his recent movie release, ‘Paradise Kiss‘. On top of that, he also had his first stage play, so Mukai is currently on a roll. In response to this result, Mukai commented, “I am so honored to be chosen by so many people. I will continue to devote myself to my work,” showing gratitude as well as his drive for the next half of the year.
Aside from his good looks, Mukai’s acting skills have been recognized by fans and critics alike. Mukai commented, “With my role in the taiga drama starting, I also have my first starring movie coming up in September. I will work harder than before.” After being scouted as a bartender, and now as one of the top actors in Japan today, you can’t keep your eye off of this ‘Cinderella Boy’.

Second place went to Okada Masaki, who is mainly active in movies now. Portraying different roles in movies such as ‘Akunin (Villain)‘ and ‘Kokuhaku (Confessions)‘, he has been recognized for his wide range in acting roles. He even won Outstanding Supporting Actor at the 34th Japan Academy Awards. With his good looks, he has the attention of the female fans, but “[his] presence in his works” captured the attention and support of many male fans as well.

Third place went to Mizobata Junpei, who currently stars in the second season of the drama ‘BOSS‘. On top of that, he had his movie ‘Koukou Debut‘ to prove that he is a worthy actor. A fan commented, “I see him on TV a lot and I feel his passion towards his acting“. With his passion for his acting and fun personality on variety shows, Mizobata Junpei will be an unstoppable force.

We can’t forget about the various child actors that have made a big impact in the first half of 2011. Suzuki Fuku from ‘Marumo no Okite‘ ranked in 7th place this year, and even before his starring role in ‘Marumo no Okite’, Suzuki has appeared in many movies and dramas, such as ‘The Golden Slumber‘ and ’Chonnmage Purin‘.
His history as an actor is quite long, but what skyrocketed this boy’s popularity was his cute and energetic ‘Marumori Dance‘ with co-star Ashida Mana, capturing the hearts of many.

“Marumo no Okite” achieves big ratings for series finale
The final episode of the Fuji TV drama series “Marumo no Okite” aired on Sunday. According to numbers released by Video Research Ltd., the episode achieved an impressive average rating of 23.9% in the Kanto region, and 20.6% in the Kansai region. The episode’s peak was 27.5%.
“Marumo no Okite” has been getting strong numbers since the beginning of the season, but it likely suffered due to airing in the same time slot as TBS’s “JIN.” That series ended last week, with a final episode that achieved 26.1% ratings (peak of 31.7%) and gave the entire series a 21.3% average.
Before the finale, the highest-rated episode of “Marumo no Okite” was two weeks earlier, at 17.2%. This means that the last episode scored almost 7 percentage points higher than the series’ peak. Overall, the final average for the series ended up at 15.8%.
The show’s theme song “Maru Maru Mori Mori!,” sung by child co-stars Ashida Mana (6) and Suzuki Fuku (6) debuted at #3 on the sales charts and has remained in the Top 10 up until now.
The final episode, which lasted 90 minutes long, also included a guest appearance by AKB48’s Maeda Atsuko (19). Maeda is starring in the new “Hanazakari no Kimitachi e ~ Ikemen Paradise” drama series, which premieres on July 10 in the same time slot.
“Maru Maru Mori Mori” tops Recochoku rankings for first half of 2011
Mobile download site Recochoku has released a partial ranking for the first half of 2011. The popular song “Maru Maru Mori Mori!,” which is the theme song of the hit drama series “Marumo no Okite,” achieved the unprecedented feat of taking #1 in seven different categories.
“Maru Maru Mori Mori!” is sung by “Marumo no Okite” co-stars Ashida Mana (7) and Suzuki Fuku (7). The song and its simple dance has become a phenomenon, pushing the CD single as high as #1 on the daily charts and #3 on the weekly charts. It has also remained in the top 10 for the past five weeks.
On Recochoku, the song’s success is even more apparent, outperforming even AKB48’s “Everyday, Kachuusha.” It ranked #1 in the overall Recochoku download chart, as well as the categories for chaku-uta, video clip, chakushin movie, melody call, new artist (single downloads), and new artist (chaku-uta).

“Maru Maru Mori Mori!” reaches quarter million in sales
“Maru Maru Mori Mori!,” the theme song to the popular television drama “Marumo no Okite,” has just reached a new milestone, as the CD single’s total sales surged past 250,000 copies this week. This is the first time in almost 35 years that a song by a Japanese artist under 10 years old has reached even 200,000 copies.
The song is sung by “Marumo no Okite” co-stars Ashida Mana (7) and Suzuki Fuku (7), under the unit name of Kaoru to Yuki, Tama ni Mook. The last Japanese artist under 10 years old to achieve 200,000 in sales was Kawahashi Hiroshi, who was 8 years old when “Yamaguchi-sanchi no Tsutomu-kun” reached 232,000 copies in June 1976. Including foreign artists, the last one was Emmanuel Lewis’s “City Connection” in July 1981 (338,000 copies).
Released on March 25, “Maru Maru Mori Mori!” entered the weekly charts at #3 and has been in the Top 10 every week since then. This past week, it experienced a big boost, jumping from #9 the previous week (11,072 copies sold) to #2 (66,549 copies sold).
“Marumo no Okite” special to air on October 9

The hit drama series “Marumo no Okite” is returning for a 2-hour special episode next month. Naturally, child stars Ashida Mana (7) and Suzuki Fuku (7) will reprise their roles as Kaoru and Tomoki, along with actor Abe Sadao (41) as Marumo.
“Marumo no Okite” aired on Fuji TV this past spring and averaged a 15.8% rating, with the final episode scoring 23.9%. The show’s theme song “Maru Maru Mori Mori!” – sung by Ashida and Suzuki – has also been in the Top 10 charts for 14 consecutive weeks.
According to Sports Nippon, the story is set during the children’s summer vacation, and the three main characters take a trip to a vineyard run by Marumo’s college underclassman. There, Kaoru and Tomoki meet another child around the same age and resolve a conflict between the child’s parents.
The episode will air on October 9th, starting at 9:00pm.
