Maradona Calls Up Salvio And Sebastian Veron

The duo will strengthen Los Albicelestes.
Aug 31, 2009 1:31:43 PM

Eduardo Salvio and Juan Sebastian Veron were included in the list of seven home-based players selected by Argentina boss Diego Maradona to face Brazil and Paraguay in two crucial qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The seven players who play for Argentine clubs are: Sebastian Dominguez, Nicolas Otamendi, Emiliano Papa (all Velez Sarsfield), Sebastian Battaglia (Boca Juniors), Mario Bolatti (Huracan), Veron (Estudiantes) and Salvio (Lanus).

The squad will reunite on Monday afternoon at AFA's sporting complex in the Buenos Aires province of Ezeiza. Here Maradona will begin to decide his squad looking ahead to the blockbuster with arch-rivals Brazil.

Of the selected players Veron is the only one in doubt of missing the Brazil game due to injury. He was taken off early in the first half for precaution when playing for Estudiantes de La Plata against rivals Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata on Saturday.

Exciting Lanus attacker, Salvio, will participate with Argentina's senior team for the first time. According to reports from the local press he could start against Paraguay.

Argentina's Martin Palermo: Playing In The World Cup Is The Ultimate Dream
'El Titan' received a surprise call-up to the national team...
Sep 1, 2009 7:10:27 PM

Boca Juniors striker Martin Palermo will return to the Argentine national team for the first time in ten years, after being announced as the replacement for the injured Diego Milito, ahead of World Cup qualifiers against Brazil and Paraguay.

"I was returning home and Diego [Maradona] called me. I didn't understand anything. He congratulated me for the goal [against Lanus] and he told me that tomorrow at four he will be waiting for me at training. I was lost for words, all I said was thanks, I'll see you tomorrow," said Palermo, who hadn't represented Los Albicelestes since the 1999 Copa America.

The veteran added: "I have to think about this possibility, give my all and fight for a place. One always wants more, but to think of the World Cup is too much. For me it isn't revenge, it is something I will enjoy."

"To play in the World Cup is the most important thing for a player," Palermo affirmed to Gol de Medianoche.

Because of injuries also to Juan Sebastian Veron and Sebastian Battaglia, Rolando Schiavi and Rodrigo Brana were also called up to the squad by Maradona.

Schiavi, who is 36 years of age, will make his national team debut for Argentina. The defender still can't digest the surprise call-up.

"Diego called me in the afternoon and I asked him if it was a prank for Tinelli [a popular Argentine television program]. He said no, that tomorrow at four I will have to present myself at Ezeiza. I still can't believe it."

Veron sees red as Argentina crash again.

ASUNCION, (Reuters) -- Paraguay qualified for their fourth successive World Cup finals with a 1-0 win over 10-man Argentina on Wednesday.

Striker Nelson Haedo scored just before the half hour to secure Paraguay's place in South Africa next year, sending Diego Maradona's team crashing to a third successive qualifying defeat and their fourth loss in six qualifiers.

Paraguay climbed to second in the South American group on 30 points, with only goal difference separating them from leaders Brazil, who have a home game against Chile later on Wednesday.

Argentina, in grave danger of failing to qualify, dropped out of the top four automatic berths, their place taken by Ecuador. They occupy fifth place which would send them into a two-leg playoff against the CONCACAF's fourth-placed team.

Haedo exchanged a one-two with midfielder Edgar Bonet in a flowing attack that scythed through the Argentina defence before fellow striker Salvador Cabanas set him up to score with a low shot past diving keeper Sergio Romero and inside the far post.

Argentina lost midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron, one of their better players in a poor team performance, eight minutes into the second half when he was sent off for a high tackle, his second bookable offence.
