Real Madrid identify Manchester United star Wayne Rooney as prime summer target - report

Real Madrid have identified Manchester United talisman Wayne Rooney as their top transfer target for the forthcoming summer transfer window, according to Spanish publication AS.
Following the failed attempt to regain the UEFA Champions League with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Karim Benzema and Xabi Alonso, it is reported that Merengues president Florentino Perez has turned his focus to the United hit-man in a renewed effort to recapture European football's top prize.
Rooney has been in blistering form this season, finding the net 30 times in 37 appearances for the Red Devils, with an incredible 18 goals coming from headers, and is considered a serious contender to claim Ballon d'Or and FIFA Player of the Year honours for 2010.

Ronaldo to Man Utd sets Spanish press on fire
The Spanish press have reacted predictably to the hints from Sir Alex Ferguson that Ronaldo could one day return to Manchester United.
The general consensus is that it was just a case of Fergie putting the boot in to Real Madrid after they were dumped out of the Champions League but it still generated huge press coverage and in one example when Marca the Real Madrid mouth piece ran the story there were over 500 comments.
The Barcelona press took a more humourous look at the story but were generally more fixated on the fact that Real Madrid had been humiliated as opposed to Fergies mind games.
The fact that the story was nothing more than a light hearted moment from Fergie, the response from the Spanish public in forums, comments boxes, radio and TV has shown the vulnerability they feel over Ronaldo and his position at Real Madrid.
Reading through some of the comments there were many comments and postings that basically feared that Ronaldo could leave if Real Madrid do not win anything this season.
That should tell you how fickle the Real Madrid fans have become, there is more chance of Wayne Rooney joining Real Madrid than of Ronaldo returning but we all know Fergie likes to make mischief.
You can expect Fergie to step up his taunting of Real Madrid and dropping subtle hints in Ronaldo’s direction and who can blame him.
Real Madrid basically turned Ronaldo’s head and lured him away from Man Utd and that still annoys Fergie to this day.
But would Man Utd even want him back? They are doing very well without him as we all can see, Rooney is on fire and even Berbatov finds the net now and then, Nani is coming in to his own as is Valencia.
Also could Man Utd really afford Ronaldo anymore while ever the Glazers are in charge, it is doubtful.
