Arashi chosen as main personalities for 35th “24 Hour Television”
Posted on January 3, 2012 by tokyograph
It was announced on New Year’s Day that Arashi has been appointed as the main personalities for this year’s “24 Hour Television” charity program this summer. This will be the group’s third time to serve as the main personalities, after doing so in 2004 and 2008.
The major theme of this year’s “24 Hour Television” is expected to be the continued recovery efforts for the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami in the Tohoku region. Last year’s “24 Hour Television,” which had Kanjani8 as the main personalities, raised more than 243 million yen for charity during its broadcast.
This year’s “24 Hour Television” will be the show’s 35th anniversary.
NTV has not yet announced the broadcast dates for the show.
SMAP to sing theme song of NHK morning drama “Umechan-sensei”
SMAP will provide the theme song for NHK’s next morning drama, “Umechan-sensei” (starring actress Horikita Maki). This will be the first time ever that a Johnny's group has sung the theme song for an NHK Asadora.
Producer Iwatani Kanako explained that it has been 20 years since SMAP’s debut, and during that time SMAP has been a leading force in Japan’s entertainment world. Because their voices have brought smiling faces to countless fans, she felt confident that they would be able to help people start off each day with a smile.
SMAP’s new song was written specifically for the drama, and it is described as a positive and encouraging song titled “Sakasama no Sora.” The song was written by Aso Tetsuro and composed and arranged by Kanno Yoko.
As announced last year, “Umechan-sensei” stars Horikita as a young woman trying to become a local doctor just after the end of World War II. The series will begin airing on April 2nd.
More cast members have been unveiled for Kanjani8’s movie “Eight Ranger,” which was first announced last month. The new additions include Higashiyama Noriyuki in his first villain role and Becky as the story’s heroine.
“Eight Ranger,” also known as “Eito Ranger,” is based on a series of skits that Kanjani8 has performed during their concerts. The skits involve the group’s members playing superheroes who battle an evil organization.
The movie is set in a fictional city in the near future, where the “Eight Ranger” team must fight against a terrorist group known as “Dark Crusade.” Higashiyama will play the villainous leader of that group, whose activities include selling slaves. Meanwhile, Becky will cast aside her usual cheerful image as she plays a female police detective with a dark past.
The other newly announced cast members are Renbutsu Misako as a detective who admires heroes, Takenaka Naoto and Tayama Ryosei as police chiefs, Ishibashi Renji as the chairman of the vigilante “Hero Association,” and Ueshima Ryuhei as a hero candidate.
It was already revealed previously that Tachi Hiroshi will play a legendary hero named Captain Silver.
“Eight Ranger” is scheduled for theatrical release on July 28.

Junichi Okada to play kamikaze pilot in “Eien no Zero”, Haruma Miura and Mao Inoue co-star
Today it was revealed that Junichi Okada of the boy band V6 will be playing Zero fighter pilot Kyuzo Miyabe in a film adaptation of Naoki Hyakuta’s popular novel Eien no Zero. Takashi Yamazaki of the ALWAYS: Sunset on Third Street franchise will direct.
Okada, who has never appeared in a war-themed project before, is taking the role very seriously and plans to chop a good deal of his hair off before filming begins. Co-stars Haruma Miura and Mao Inoue are equally prepared for the June start date.
In the film, Miura plays a young man named Kentaro Saeki who has been trying unsuccessfully to realize his dream of passing the bar exam and Inoue plays his older sister Keiko, a freelance writer. Together, they begin investigating the circumstances surrounding their grandfather Kyuzo’s death in a kamikaze attack during the Pacific War.
Kyuzo had an unusually strong fear of death and unmatched will to survive, so why would he volunteer for suicide? They unexpectedly discover that their grandfather’s Navy comrades referred to him as “gifted, but a coward”. The two of them uncover astonishing facts which have been sealed for 60 years.
Okada will play Kyuzo, a Zero fighter pilot who continually professed his desire to “return to his wife alive”, even as the Japanese military faced increasing odds of defeat.
Distributor Toho has announced principal photography of “Eien no Zero” will begin in June on-location in Amami Ōshima, Chiba City, and Ibaraki with the inclusion of lots of large-scale aerial acrobatics shot from the sky. It will take about three months to shoot. After post-production, it should be ready for release in Japan around spring 2013.
