[Shrimp’s* point of view] 2PM & JYP vs. Music Video director: Overreaction?

JYP Entertainment entered a trade conflict with two music video directors. With the MV directors backing away from contracts right before the filming, it is essential that scheduling difficulties arose. The general public would obviously think “So what?” To everyone, who is saying: “Can’t you postpone the MV filming?” “Is delaying the schedule some rocket science, or what?” I have to say it’s somewhat different for the shrimps.
It was right when 2PM made their comeback and track release date in the beginning of June official through various means of mass media. 2PM’s first comeback in 9 months since September. According to the fans, the previous promotional period with the 4th regular album “Go Crazy” was too short, so they have been waiting even more for this comeback. 2PM might be very busy across the sea in Japan, but they’ve become a group that is hard to meet in Korea.
An idol group comeback is not a simple commencement of promotional events. It is even more so for the 2PM members who have brisk personal activities. When a group makes a comeback, all the personal member activities come to a halt (or All Stop). That is so because it is hard to digest personal activities in the midst of a busy group schedule. Nowadays it is common for the idol group members to adjust their personal schedules according to the group’s comeback, so if the group’s comeback gets delayed, it’s only natural that all the other plans get pushed back as well. 2PM’s schedule for this year got pushed back completely.
2PM is a group that has its schedule full for the next 2 or 3 years because the idols who have been in the business for over 7 years can no longer be called young. It is hard to delay the enlistment. In the last year interview to the Kuki News, 2PM has revealed that “The schedule for the oncoming 2 or 3 years is already full, and we have already discussed with the members the enlistment, and when the members would reunite again as 2PM when they’re back.”
Schedule matches the flow of the music entertainment. Weekly ups and downs
The words “low-season” and “peak season” have long lost its meaning in the Korean music market that mainly turns around digital music sites. Instead of that, the timing became important. From selecting a song that matches the season, to checking what other groups come back at the same time. An idol group’s comeback is always adjusted according to several requirements. The concept also occupies an important part.
How would SISTAR’s last year hit Touch My Body performed in charts if it had been released in October? Or, if the last week’s Mnet MCountdown winners BTS had released their track a week later, in the aggregated digital charts the group would have obviously been pushed down by Big Bang. To put it simply, one week’s difference can decide the highs and lows of the group’s activities. That’s why even the fans were so sensitive about the news of 2PM’s schedule delay.
The junior group situation… The entire JYPE’s schedule gets pushed back
It’s not only the 2PM fans who are angry about this schedule delay. The same applies to the GOT7’s fandom, as the group was scheduled to comeback right after 2PM. They made their debut in 2014, but the opportunity for the overseas debut came early on, and now it’s possible to see GOT7 in Korea only once in a blue moon. Even constant promotional activities all year round would not be enough for a rookie group, but after the Stop Stop It activities last year, GOT7’s comeback period was set for 6 months later. On top of that, the Stop Stop It activities came to a close after an extremely short 3 weeks period.
After 2PM’s promotional period, GOT7 was supposed to take over the baton, but with 2PM’s comeback being postponed, GOT7 is also naturally pushed back. The Agase (GOT7’s fan club) now also have a longer way to go until they see GOT7.
Eventually, JYPE pulled out the publicity and the legal action card. On May 11th, JYPE announced through their official website that Han Samin “4 days before the Music Video filming and production, one-sidedly announced the halt of production.” JYPE also said that “it is customary to carry out the contract negotiations right before the MV filming, or during it,“ and the company argued that „due to such irresponsible behavior of the production staff we are now in a difficult situation where 2PM’s music video planning, filming schedule, music track release, promotion and marketing details must be arranged anew.” In relation to this, the director’s side has explained that it was just a “verbal agreement,” but even in the music industry this is considered to be the lack of work ethics.
JYPE went public with this not as a method of taking a legal action. They also offered their explanation and apology to the fans, who have been waiting for the comeback with the official date already announced. No matter whose fault it might be, eventually, the only ones who take care of the shrimps are “oppas.”
