MADRID, September 17 (Primera Liga) - Real Madrid bounced back from their midweek Champions League setback to beat Real Sociedad at the Bernabeu on Sunday night.
The critics had had a field day following Madrid's 2-0 defeat at Lyon on Wednesday night and the knives were being sharpened once more as Madrid struggled to find top gear for the majority of the contest against the Basques.
But new recruit Jose Antonio Reyes came to the rescue with a 69th-minute free-kick to open the scoring and David Beckham, on as a substitute, made sure of the points in time added on.
The defeat, coupled with a red card for midfielder Mikel Aranburu in the 73rd-minute, made it a miserable night for Jose Mari Bakero's men.
The early stages were uneventful with neither side creating much in the way of chances.
The first opportunity eventually fell the way of Madrid in the ninth minute.
Brazilian full-back Cicinho got forward and delivered a fine cross for Raul but the hosts' captain could only direct his header wide.
Sociedad responded and created an even better chance, Inigo Diaz heading Javier Garrido's free-kick off target from just six yards when he ought to have pressed Iker Casillas into action.
Ruud van Nistelrooy has made a fine start to his Madrid career after moving to Spain from Manchester United, netting a hat-trick in last weekend's 4-1 win at Levante, and he nearly added to his tally five minutes before the break.
The Holland international broke clear but his lobbed effort was well saved by Sociedad keeper Asier Riesgo.
Van Nistelrooy's former Premiership rival Reyes, on a season-long loan in Madrid from Arsenal, nearly broke his Madrid scoring duck after 50 minutes but his 18-yard drive flashed over the bar.
The hosts were starting to up the tempo and Riesgo was forced into action to deny Fabio Cannavaro and Van Nistelrooy.
The breakthrough seemed inevitable and so it proved when Reyes curled home a free-kick although Riesgo will have been disappointed to see the shot hit the net after getting a strong hand to the ball.
Spain winger Reyes nearly played a part in another Madrid goal three minutes later but his cross was headed wastefully wide by Raul - the kind of chance the striker would have gobbled up in his prime.
Madrid's position was strengthened further with 17 minutes to go when referee Cesar Muniz Fernandez adjudged Aranburu's challenge on Sergio Ramos worthy of a straight red.
It looked a harsh decision but, in the official's defence, the tackle was from behind.
Sociedad's lack of manpower was evident in the final minute as Beckham led a charge from three Madrid players from inside their own half.
There were no Sociedad players in sight as the former England captain sprinted through and coolly slotted the ball past Riesgo.
