"Saimdang, the Herstory" Song Seung-heon turns into the 'Joseon Gatsby'
Actor Song Seung-heon is playing the role of Lee Gyeom, a genius painter in the new drama "Saimdang, the Herstory". Lee Gyeom is the Joseon version of "The Great Gatsby". "Saimdang, the Herstory" is a fusion historical drama about a Korean art history teacher who coincidentally finds the diary of Saimdang (Lee Yeong-ae) and solves her secret. Song Seung-heon takes on the role of Lee Gyeom who is a free spirit from head to toe but doesn't negotiate with injustice. Lee Gyeom is also the owner of an art gallery in the Joseon times and the head of a painting bureau and he is a Joseon renaissance in painting, writing, a Korean musical instrument and dance.

This January 26, Oh!K brings you Saimdang -Soulmates Across Time, starring Lee Young-Ae, famous from the 2003 award-winning television series, Jewel in the Palace alongside Song Seung Heon (Autumn In My Heart, East of Eden). Saimdang, set in both Joseon era and the present day, is a drama that combines fact and fiction, telling the story of the unconventional 16th century Korean woman. Lee Young-Ae plays modern day Seo Ji Yun – a university Korean art history lecturer and mother of an eight year old son. Her life gets difficult when mishaps kept on happening to her and she comes across an old book which suspected to be Saimdang’s memoirs, in Italy. Engrossed in the book, she gets swept away in the whirlwind of destiny. Lee Young-Ae plays both Seo Ji Yun and Shin Saimdang Young-Ae also played Saimdang, the artist with an extraordinary sense of color, and also the woman who writes the Sujinbang Diary, which was discovered by Seo Ji Yun. Song Seung Heon plays Lee Gyeom, a carefree spirit who never stopped loving Saimdang and devotes himself to the women he loves. Song Seung Heon as the painter Lee Gyeom K-popped! thanks to Oh!K had the opportunity to catch Saimdang a week before the first broadcast on television. Fans of period dramas, we were excited to catch the drama and the fact that it stars both Lee Young-Ae and heartthrob Song Seung Heon, is a plus. The 1st episode starts with setting the story line for the female lead, modern day Seo Ji Yun whose having a not so perfect life. Her life crumbles even more after a series of events starts unraveling. Then a mysterious book shows up while she was in Italy, which piqued her interest. What’s going to happen to Seo Ji Yun? Four reasons to watch Lee Young-ae and Song Seung-heon's "Saimdang: Light's Diary"
The first and second episodes of the new SBS drama "Saimdang: Light's Diary" are being broadcast on the 26th. "Saimdang: Light's Diary" is a fusion historical about a Korean History lecturer named Seo Ji-yoon (Lee Young-ae) who comes across Saimdang's (Lee Young-ae) diary in Italy. Here are some points not to miss to enjoy the drama to the fullest. - Lee Young-ae comes back for the first time in 13 years, while Song Seung-heon makes a difference This is the first time Lee Young-ae is making a drama appearance since "Dae Jang Geum" 13 years ago. Fellow actors can't help but express their happiness of being able to work with her. Lee Young-ae takes on 2 roles as Saimdang and Seo Ji-yoon. Director Yoon Sang-ho and writer Park Eun-ryeong claim they couldn't imagine anyone else playing the part of Saimdang. Song Seung-heon is her co-actor and he is appearing as the Joseon version of "The Great Gatsby". Lee Young-ae claimed she saw a side of him she never imagined and it's the best she's seen so far. - Oh Yoon-ah, Kim Hae-sook, Park Hye-soo and Yang Se-jong Various actors and actresses are making appearances in the drama. Rising rookies Park Hye-soo and Yang Se-jong are taking on the roles of young Saimdang and Lee Kyeom. They start off the drama with sweet and innocent romance. Yang Se-jong plays two roles as young Lee Kyeom and the modern day Han Sang-hyeon, Seo Ji-yoon's helper in tracking down the secret to Geum-kang San-do. Saimdang's rival Hwieumdang is played by Oh Yoon-ah. The other casts includes Kim Hye-sook, Choi Jong-hwan, Yoon Da-hoon, Choi Cheol-ho, Lee Kyeong-jin, Choi Il-hwa, Kim Mi-kyeong, Park Joon-myeon, Lee Hae-yeong, Hong Seok-cheon and more. - Fusion historical drama with imagination "Saimdang: Light's Diary" begins with Seo Ji-yoon, an ordinary working mom who discovers Saimdang's diary in Italy. She unveils interesting tales that we never dreamt of. It's not a time-slip fantasy, but it's based on historical facts. Saimdang, Lee Yool-gok's mother and the best example of a good wife and wise mother, was the first genius artist there ever was during her time. Wirter Park Eun-ryeong says, "Saimdang was known as Artist Shin rather than Yool-gok's mom. She was a mother and a wife but she loved art and the way she sacrificed herself is still not uncomfortable to see today". Lee Young-ae who studied the historical figure for her part, said, "I just wish she wasn't reflected as a wife and mother. She was elegant but energetic and that's how I plan on portraying her". - Excellent imagery and directing "Saimdang: Light's Diary" was taken all over the country for a year. It was even taken in Italy to create imagery beyond expectations. Under Yoon Sang-ho's orders, the cast and crew followed his lead and created a well-made drama. We can also see Korean art through this drama. Like "Dae Jang Geum" delivered the taste of Korean food all over the world, "Saimdang: Light's Diary" will spread the beauty of Korea and Korean art. Lee Young-ae's drawing has become so good it's hard to believe she learned it in a month and Song Seung-heon plays the Geomungo like he was meant to. Everyone struggled to learn the art of history so that it doesn't seem awkward in the drama.
