McMahon Urges Benitez To Stop Rotation
Former Liverpool midfielder Steve McMahon has added his opinion to the growing debate surrounding the current plight of the Merseyside club by urging manager Rafa Benitez to stick to his strongest team.
With four draws and a defeat in their opening five games of 2008, Liverpool抯 title challenge is all but over lying as they do down in seventh place.
Former Anfield midfield enforcer McMahon feels that the Sunderland game on Saturday is a must-win game for the Reds if they are to keep alive their hopes of finishing in the top four and clinching a Champions League berth.
"Saturday's match against Sunderland is a must win game for Liverpool so Rafa Benitez has to pick his strongest line-up" he said.
"Expectations are high; even a draw in the game would not be good enough, and anything other than three put would really put Benitez under a lot of pressure.
"Going into February in seventh place is not good enough for Liverpool football club, Benitez realises that, so he has got to select his strongest XI from now until the end of the season.
"There are lots of things going wrong at Liverpool and I don't think the off-the-field activity has helped but having said that it is not an excuse. The players should ignore what has been happening off the pitch and be professional. It shouldn't be used as an excuse for certain players.
"A lot of games they have lost or drawn recently have been with poor performances. It's not like they have simply been unlucky.
"Champions League football is a must for Liverpool both in terms of finance and prestige but they have no divine right to finish fourth" he continued. "Everton are strong and play their best team week-in week-out and I like the look of Aston Villa under Martin O'Neill, who rarely leaves his best players out.
"Liverpool shouldn't really be struggling against the likes of Birmingham, Derby and Sunderland - they have to win those types of games if they want to clinch that fourth spot."
McMahon, who made 276 appearances for the Reds winning three league titles and 2 FA Cups along the way, also believes there is too much pressure on young Fernando Torres. The Spaniard has grabbed 17 goals in all competitions so far but McMahon believes the goalscoring burden needs to be shared with another striker.
"Torres has come to Liverpool to score goals and he has shown he can score goals. He excites the crowd and excites the players" McMahon added. "But he is only a young man and Benitez needs to get someone to take the pressure of Torres by finding a player who can work effectively alongside him.
"It could be a problem for Benitez in the near future if he goes through a lean spell which all good strikers do have at some stage.
"What really worries me is that Benitez does not know who the best partner for Torres is. He's tried Peter Crouch, Dirk Kuyt and Andrei Voronin and none of them have really clicked.
"If you look at the great Liverpool goal scorers they had a strike partner who they worked well with. Ian Rush with Kenny Dalglish, John Toshack and Kevin Keegan etc. You need to develop an understanding and you've got to have that so you know what your partner is going do and it's important.
"It's a long-term problem he has to address in the summer but for the time being he should be consistent with his selection - I personally think Crouch should get a run alongside Torres and see if their partnership develops.
"It is the same for Steven Gerrard - he needs to play alongside a settled partner in midfield. One week it was (Mohamed) Sissoko, when he was at the club, then it was (Javier) Mascherano and then (Xabi) Alonso. You have to get an understanding alongside your partner in the side.
"When I played I had a great understanding with Jan Molby and football is all about developing partnerships in crucial positions.
"It is frustrating to watch Liverpool not playing a settled team week-in, week-out. I don't see Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea constantly chopping and changing." |
