Singapore insisted that it could do whatever it wishes
within its territory, be it land, sea or air. In this
connection, I would like to raise the subject of airspace
control.
I was flying recently from Kertih to Johor Baru. The route
requires the plane to fly over Pekan, Mersing, then Johor
Baru. To cut short the journey, I requested from Kuantan air
traffic control for a direct route from Pekan to Johor Baru.
I was instructed to call Singapore air traffic control for
clearance, which I did. Even though I managed to get the
clearance, the fact remained that I had to ask permission
from an agency of another country to fly a direct route from
one point to another point in my own country.
Ironical as it may seem, this arrangement is in place
because Malaysia lacks radar, ground equipment and human
resources to undertake the control and management of the air
space over the whole of Peninsular Malaysia. As a result,
all aircraft, civil or military, domestic or foreign flying
from Kuala Lumpur to Kuching or Kota Kinabalu and back, will
have to get approval from Singapore as to what level they
can fly at.
