continue movie week interview between GHS&SHJ~~
ALTHOUGH I FELT BURDENED, IT’S OK
----------------------------------------
MV: (......) The atmosphere while writing the screenplay (scenarios) must have been great.
GHS: I didn’t mention about casting in the movie, instead I talked about the scenes first. And then while walking home I said ‘but, you have to do that (play the role), didn’t I?’ (laughs)
SHJ: I initially just read the screenplay since she told me to, and after reading I thought ‘it’s fun(interesting) and great.’ She asked me to act in the movie after hearing my response. Therefore, there might have been queries. ‘Why? It will be fine, won’t it?’ (laughs) (<-- not too certain whether I understood her right)
GHS: Actually Hyun Jin helped me out during ‘cheerful caretaker’. When I was writing yo-sool, the character was also written in line with her personality. Moreover, she’s also someone who knows music. That’s why I believed in her. Chances are other actresses may only be able to act well, but Hyun Jin will be able to demonstrate the musicality of the character. Although she hasn’t played the piano before, I believe she can do well. In the end, she did everything. She practiced the piano. (laughs)
SHJ: I really don’t remember how many times I destroyed the piano. (laughs) It’s because I have a temper.
MV: Then did you personally perform the pieces in the movie?
GHS: Yes, she did that. She took some lessons and after that she practiced on her own. There’s a piano in our office so she’d come for practices. There were a few times we’d hear the music (going Kwang Kwang). It pricked me as I was having a meeting outside the room. (laughs). I thought I must have placed a heavy burden on her. Even then I didn’t say anything, and she managed to complete it in the end.
SHJ: No, I told you many times that I can’t do it. That it was too hard (laughs). I said I couldn’t do it. However even though I can’t play the entire song, I practiced really hard the parts that are shown in the movie for 4 months.
MV: Since you suffered so much, she must pay you well.
SHJ: She bought me a lot of delicious meals.
GHS: I’ll pay you more next time (laughs)
MV: Motif(?) female lead is your friend, you must have talked a lot while filming.
GHS: She really believed in me. She accommodated me countless times. Since I’m also an actress, there have been times when I’ve trusted and followed someone. We’d discuss a lot about the project before filming, but when we’re in the process of filming, we almost never talk about it.
MV: In your discussion, have you ever made a detailed proposal?
GHS: Ah, there’s a scene where she had to walk barefoot in the snow.
SHJ: Originally, it didn’t snow on the day we wanted to film that scene so we switched to film something else. However, it didn’t turn out pretty at all. We can even see specks of dust (??). On days when we were filming other scenes, it would snow the entire day. I was mourning becoz of that. It was really pretty seeing the snow from the sky piling up. Therefore if we didn’t film that day, when can we film the scene.
GHS: That is the scene shown in our second poster.
MV: The burden of responsibility should be lessened since you’re filming with your friend.
GHS: A friend will be on my side more than anyone else. I can tell her how people have talked about or treated me (unfairly). (laughs).
SHJ: And we’d say together ‘Omo, for what reason? They can’t do this!’
MV: Will you beat the other party up for her instead?
SHJ: I can’t do it to that point, but I’ll write about it in my diary in the form of a ‘desk note’ and give it to her. (laughs)
GHS: Usually, the director is the most lonely person on site, but becoz I have my friend with me, I never felt that way.
MV: However comfortable you may feel, it’s still your first long movie project. There must have been some difficulties.
GHS: The budget was the hardest part compared to everything else. I had to be responsible towards the budget e.g being responsible when I couldn’t pay the personnel and when there are things that I had to give up becoz they are beyond the budget. Those were the toughest.
--------------------------------
MV: Since you worked on two projects together, what is it like when you see her as an actress instead of a friend?
SHJ: It would be better to ask this when I’m not around (laughs).
GHS: She can focus really well. She is able to emotionally absorb the character, making the Ji-eun character even better. She’s able to absorb well just like drawing paper. But after she finishes with her scene, she’d say “must I do it this way?”
SHJ: I don’t monitor myself very well. So I’m not sure whether I did it right.
GHS: But she never once made a mistake. Even when we’re doing the editing, she never once made the mistake of misconnecting actions.
SHJ: Ji-eun never moved much. After meeting she’d sit down and only slightly turned her neck (laughs).
GHS: She’s really detailed and recognizes well. That’s a strong point. She knows her own appearance, and is an actress who’s comfortable and nice to work with. When not given directions, she doesn’t just look at it from one viewpoint and act (laughs). In those circumstances, she is able to adapt and embrace it well. It's in her nature not to cause inconvenience to others. So during filming, although Hyun Jin is an easy-going person, I also felt that she helped me out a lot.
MV: It hasn’t been long since your short movie project was shown and you’re already filming your long movie project. It was a surprise, really? Why is it so soon?
SHJ: The momentum was good. Really, ‘rush’ is not a word to describe the point when one embarks on the work.
GHS: We cleaned up(took care of things) and started (laughs).
MV: Who cleaned up?
SHJ: As for yesterday, we fixed the song. Yesterday we had a public performance on the street. Initially I was supposed to sing only one song. However, in the end we had 3 opening songs. I haven’t tried them before.
GHS: I made up my mind to sing, but I couldn’t. So I said “Hyun Jin –ah, you have to sing this. It’s not my key." (laughs).
MV: did you compose the music in your movie?
GHS: The majority of the pieces are works we have created. Most of them are written by the musical director, I wrote 3 pieces. Aside from the classic version of “arirang’s dream” and Yoo Jae Ha’s “You in my arms”, the rest were composed for the movie.
MV: Have you always composed music?
GHS: I can’t handle midi(?) proficiently so I just compose the melody.
SHJ: It’s because she only knows the fundamental of piano playing.
GHS: It’s not as if I play well, but I find it interesting. I feel a boastful pride seeing close friends who can sing and compose. (laughs)
SHJ: The people she’s close to are all creative people. Friends who compose music, choreographers. Therefore, they are ones that show the creative results of their work one by one.
GHS: As for us, we create and show a movie, be it ‘cheerful caretaker’ or the Asiana International Short Movie Festival trailer.
WE KNOW/UNDERSTAND EACH OTHER EVEN WITHOUT WORDS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MV: The female lead in the movie Yo-sool is trapped between two men. Usually when faced with such a situation, would you pick one of the men or see both of them?
GHS: If I’m distressed over who to pick, I will date neither. I will only meet them. Have a meal together. Omo, I said a bad thing (laughs).
SHJ: I have to decide clearly, but I won’t date them.
GHS: I will just see them but I won’t be dating them since I cannot clearly decide between them. However, in the end, if it continues that way, no one is chosen.
SHJ: (As for Hye Sun) she thinks that to be in love means marriage. She’s very cautious about being in a love relationship. She wants to clearly see what type of person he is.
GHS: I see a love relationship and marriage similarly. I will love a person I want to marry.
MV: Do you introduce guys to each other?
GHS: We try to and are working at it, but our styles are different.
MV: Becoz of that, you will more willingly introduce him.
GHS: However, I might think the person is cool and introduce him to Hyun Jin, but he’s not her style. (laughs)
SHJ: I know, we have to be on a search (laughs)
MV: You mentioned about a vampire project, how about both of you acting in this project in a story about 2 girls and a guy? 2 vampire sisters loving the same man!
GHS: This time there will be 3 girls and 1 guy. I have already finished writing the screenplay and am currently revising it.
MV: Are you working together this time as well?
GHS: I haven’t asked for her opinion. I’ve only thought about it myself. When I say ‘The next hairstyle will have to be this’, the reply would be like ‘Oh?’ (laughs)
SHJ: It can’t always be my idea. (??) when she says ‘do it’, I’ll ask ‘when?’ and she’ll say ‘starting from tomorrow.’ (laughs)
GHS: I’ve gone to the extent of telling her only one day before filming my trailer. I said ‘we have to start tomorrow.’(laughs)
SHJ: I think it must be fate. There’s also fate in finding your friends. It’s strange but our schedules seem to fit well.
GHS: Strangely, although people have said you can’t work on a job with your friends, when I work with Hyun Jin, there’s a lot of synergy.

interview for SCREEN: Keep Going
GHS was the flower in the drama,[BOF].
Not just any flower, but the one that ruled the hearts of no less than 4 amazingly attractive boys who may ever exist in this world. The luck that GHS grasped through BOF was so great that it surprised everybody when it was announced that she is about to debut as a director of a full-length film. She has directed a short film [Cheerful Cartaker], published a book, and held an art exhibition. However, to direct a feature film is a surprise of whole different dimension.
Already, several famous actors have directed short films.
In the world of publishing, every month, it is becoming a common trend to see more and more celebrities putting their names on various types of books—some have photographs taken directly by the celebrities, with drawings, displaying their artistic talents.
However, in order to make a feature movie, doesn’t the female actress have to voluntarily give up her flower power?
I went to interview GHS with these thoughts in mind.
I wanted to hear the story of an actress who threw away glamour to become a director; I wanted to hear the story of how a flower became a flower pot. I imagined that she had to have made up her mind with such heavy resolution in order to make her own style of movie. However, contrary to my expectation, she walked lightly into the studio smiling her uncommonly bright smile. Her simple smile still showed GHS the actress, but it also was not so bad as GHS the director. Sitting down for her first interview with SCREEN, she stopped the beautiful smile and went straight into the business of answering questions—without any glitter or showiness.
Dir. Goo’s simple confession with no glitter:
Q: Your full-length film debut is so quick. It has been only two years since your short film debut.
A: Sometimes, I wonder to myself, what have I done!. To stand before the public is anxiety-provoking, but I am more excited. I toured many film festivals with the short-film, Cheerful Caretaker. Thanks to that, I think many people watched it with more ease. Of course, I also owe to the staff, most of whom worked with me on both the short and the long films and I also owe to the success of the drama, [BOF]. It also made it easier for me to make faster connection with strangers. For example, I made faster connection with the women through stories about F4. (laughter)
Q: Actually I was also told to bring back some stories about Goo Joon Pyo )lee Min Ho.
A: I have been harassed for such information now for 2 years! I think I now have to stop hanging around with those friends. (laugher)
Q: Did you have any difficulties working as both actor and director simultaneously?
A: Staff did face some adjustment period because I was totally different from my actress image. Luckily, they all adjusted soon enough. During the latter half of filming, I was trying to do my acting part for the movie. The staff just could not adjust to my becoming an actor again. They went wild teasing me for my trying to emote for my part. Actually it became a good lesson for me. I became aware of things that I was not able to monitor when just acting. I always used to think that I was acting with directing in mind. However, I realized that I never really understood directing. It was a chance for me to learn and discover things I did badly.
Q: You mean you were able to look at yourself from a third-party perspective?
A: I discovered several of my bad habits: frequent blinking, frequent moving of the mouth, etc. I learned that those few small movements can break down the steady flow of emotions. For this movie, I decisively edited out those parts. No previous directors ever pointed these parts to me before. My feeling is that they were being just considerate of me and may not have wanted to interfere with the process of emoting.
Q: It was very interesting the way you dealt with young people’s feelings of inferiority and envy—somewhat the positive model version of ?<Bison> 1998?
A: My initial draft of script very much lacked the popular appeal. I fixed it 21 times to finally come up with the final draft. It was difficult to make the appropriate gauge between things I wanted to express and making sure the audience can feel the expression as well.
Q: Your set design of placing a chalk at the crack in the door of JiEun’s practicing room was impressive. If the door is opened with some force, the chalk will break. If one does not want to break the chalk, the door cannot be opened.
A: That set up was to describe JiEun’s personality. Having her open her mind is like getting a slap on the face. Basically, I wanted to show in a roundabout way how unable she is to open her heart completely to anyone. And there will remain traces of broken pieces. The device is JiEun’s own particular design to keep people out. I needed a way to portray JiEun’s closed personality. Ultimately, she even thinks of suicide. Many people have mentioned feeling panicky in those parts of the movie.
Q: How did you cast the main actors?
A: Suh Hyun Jin and I are long-time friends. She was a part of the MILK dance group and originally wanted to be a singer. She also has a face that I like.
Q: She seems to resemble you?
A: (laughter) It might be because she and I appear in similar clothes in the movie?
Q: What is Lim Ji Gyu and Kim Jung Wook like? Especially, Lim JiGyu is a pretty famous face in the world of independent films.
A: That is correct. It has not been long since he made a debut in commercial films. He is a very positive person. Actually I found out about him as I searched the internet. While I was getting interested in LJG and KJW, other people around me also recommended them to me. Lim is an actor who showed much concern about the directorial aspect of the movie as well. Movie’s Jung Woo is a character that constantly worried about what he already had. Kim Jung Woo was the actor that perfectly fitted the character from his appearance to the way he talked, even to his voice.
Q: Song Young Soon, Choi Il Hwa and other experienced actors also make appearance. How did you direct your much older sunbaes about acting?
A: I rarely directed them in acting. Choi Il Hwa teacher (more respectful than sunbae) tends to work conversing a great deal. He was uncomfortable as there were hardly any directions. I tend to depend whole on the actors. Once the basic emotion and the environment are set up, I believe that the rest is the responsibility of the actors. I never went beyond three takes.
Q: As a director, how do you solve problems on location?
A: If I occasionally have conflicts of opinion, I tend to feed people with alcohol or something sweet. I just feed them first and then see what happens. (laughter) Actually, it was hard because the staff tend to be so punctual. I tend to be a kind of person who sleeps late and come into work a little late. But they would all come in on time and making me feel burdened. Because I took the bold initial step to be late, the filming work environment became much gentler. (laughter)
Q: Since it is a musical movie, Music Director Choi In Young’s role must have been very important. How did you meet him?
A: While I was working on my music album last year, I met him. I asked him to play my composition on the piano. The way he rearranged my music gave a very different feel and I became very interested. We became even closer through the musical gathering.
Q: You often compose your own music. You must have lots of interest in music.
A: I have been interested since I was young. I played piano and composed since young. My friends from that time think me awkward for turning into an actress and a director.
Q: Did you have your hands into the music part of this movie as well?
A: Besides the ones composed and/or rearranged by Music Director Choi In Young, few of my own work pieces are in the movie as well. Among them is one piece that Music Director rearranged a great deal that it is more appropriate to call it a cooperative piece.
Q: I sense your affection for the movie’s music. Don’t you want to make an OST?
A: Yes, there are pieces that I composed and many pieces that I love in the movie. However, I have to consider the budget. After the movie opens, I will see. (laughter)
Q: You are actively working in various areas as an actress, illustrator, composer and director. Do you have a special role model?
A: One time, a news article came out saying that my role model is Leonardo DaVnci. Actually, all I said was that I was very influenced by the book called, To Think Like Leonardo Davinci. ….(laughter) It was a book that I read with deep concentration and even underlined. If I must choose a role model, I would choose the novelist, Lee Weh Soo-ssi. I even follow him through the tweeter. I like his views about life. He is able to talk freely about what is on his mind. I want to be able to do that as well.

All-Around Beauty GHS's 26 year story. (GHS is 25 yo by western standard but 26 yo in Korea.)
At age 15, a very pretty junior high school student GHS dreamed of becoming a celebrity. 10 years later, GHS has become an actress, novelist, composer, illustrator and a movie director. She is truly a 'Pal-bang-mi-in" in the old terminology and "yeh-neung young-jae"=gifted entertainer in modern terms. We may wonder if she received expensive education in KangNam, but that is not it.
"I grew up in a small town in InChun. Father was a regular salary-man. My town was behind a public cemetary. My hometown had an unusally high number of artists living there. Next door unni was a musical actress, across the hall was new bride who majored in piano. When I was young, there was no distinction of whose house is whose: we gathered at the front house and I sometimes slept at the next door. I rarely ever went to a hospital. Grandmother who lived in the front house gave me acupuncture and the Master Spiritual Guide ajussi who was the owner told prophecies,"
She may have opened her eyes to art and ears to music. However, she loved hanging out with her friends until the sun went down and her white face turned dark from dust. Composing was the start of her love for art and love for people. While people may put all their effort into becoming number 1, GHS wanted to live her life doing everything that she wants to do no matter the consequences.
Jung Seung Hae's message to GHS: Do not worry about tomorrow but really live today well."
GHS was always interested in writing and even thought about becoming a screen/script writer. She always and consistently wrote even when she appeared on TV. She was concerned about showing her work to male directors as it may cause scandals. Then, she met Rep Jung Seung Hae by accident at a meeting. One year later she took her scritp to her.
Rep JUng told GHS how she liked her script: "GHS, don't get hurt, Your script is worth only 10won~~(maybe 1 cent) GO and throw it away.?"
GHs met YG's Pres Yang Hyun Suk through a friend about 7 years ago. She was already known as an ulzzang and was a singing student at another talent agency. He said, "So, are you GHS? Let me hear your singin."
That was a type of an audition. After listening to her sing, he told her to 'just act'. She felt very sad but decided to listen to Pres Yang who used to be a part of Suh Tae Ji and the Kids. I am not sure if GHS or Pres Yang said this, but: "GHS is originally positive and cheerful that she would believe just about anybody. If she met a con-artist, she would have been a perfect candidate for being conned." GHS says that Pres Yang was the first best adult person that she met during the time that she needed guidance. One time, YG eliminated the acting department and GHS had to leave YG, but she persisted and influenced Pres Yang to keep her.
10 years later, she is Director GHS.
More than directing, GHS wanted to be a screen writer. As a 5th grader, she wrote a poem for a friend who was moving away: "My friend is returning home" which made her friend cry really hard. As a first year in Junior high school, she wrote another poem, "leaves have died and now asleep" and won the excellence award for it. She always had deep affection for writing.
YoSool was originally going to be about guitarist but GHS changed her mind after seeing SOng Yong Hoon perform 2 years ago.During the 2 hours of performance, GHS wrote the summary of YoSool and then fixed it over 20 times.
GHS also comes out in her movie about 10scenes without any lines. As a director, GHS says that she is not interested in GHS actress for her movie.

하지만 결국 모두 선입견일 뿐이에요” ",,,I feel that it is not correct to think that a person's age indicates a person's experience/qualification. A teenager's thoughts only come out during that stage of life. Actually, I did not receive such biased feelings from others but from myself. I was the one who felt that they do not acknowledge me or listen to me because I am too young and inexperienced. I was being self-conscious. However, the staff was not at all conscious of how I felt inside, but their focus was on how to make a good movie. It is all part of biased views.[/color]~~(GHS seems to really work hard at analyzing herself and the situation. She mentioned long ago that by listening to certain music, she is able to get deep into herself to understand and to let it go---I believe this is one of her technique of 'emptying (her) mind'---I would imagine a person has to be very disciplined and resolute to face oneself in that way!)
남자의 열등감도 결국 사랑이더라고요”~~"I believe that love cannot be excluded from any type of stories. It loses the importance or significance without it. Even a man's feelings of inferiority is ultimately love.
Musical movie is a difficult genre as a first directorial challenge. The director must also have a high level understanding of music.
그 이후 시나리오와 병행을 했기 때문에 음악이 표현해주는 감정이 더 컸던 것 같아요” ~~"Instead of words or script lines, music draws out the emotions. Actually it was easier for me. Story follows the music. I wanted to make the audience feel as if they have come to 1.5 hours of concert. Our music was made before the movie. After that I changed the scenario to enhance the music's quality for emoting.
<YoSool> is not an easy movie. There are few scenes here and there which would be hard for audience to grasp. Audience may even get feelings of films being cut here and there. One must enter the movie expecting to fit the puzzle pieces. If not, one will be uncomfortable. Actually this part of her movie gets some criticisms. This may indicate the difference between GHS's desire/greed vs the audience's feelings.
한번 더 보면 이해를 할 수 있는 구조죠”~~"I eliminated many story-telling concept from my movie. Performances are inserted in between. It could be something that people may not be able to accept. Howevever, it can also be viewed as the movie's special charm. Because it is a movie, I felt it was possible. I set up special designs/articles along the way so that audience do not have to think too much and, at the end, I completed all the puzzle pieces. I hope that the audience would see the movie and wonder about: What is the story?, feeling betrayed at the conclusion. needing to think more about the movie once you go home, feeling like you can understand it if you see it one more time."
그리고 그 역할에 대한 감정은 설명하기 어려워 제가 출연한 거에요”~~"My appearance in the movie is as a tool to draw out Suh Hyun Jin's character. It was such a small role and a role that is very difficult to understand and explain that I had to do it myself."
서로에게 권해줄 수 싶을 정도로 얻어가는 것이 많거든요[color="#0000FF"]”~~"Acting and directing are just so different. Two polar opposite people are meeting in one space. You have to do both to understand both. As a director, I felt that I can understand actors. however, in the actual film location, you turn more logical and your own desires come up. But all the actors are emotional. Sometimes logic and emotion clash. I recommend people trying both--each profession can gain so much from each other."
