Panda sets Korean B.O. records

Written by Han Sunhee

SEOUL - "Kung Fu Panda" set records as the fastest moving animated movie in Korean box office history. It topped the chart for the second consecutive week with 908,368 admissions over its second weekend and has taken a cumulative gross of $15.4 million. The pic passed 2 million ticket sales landmark Saturday, its tenth day of release. That is some four days quicker than "Shrek 2," which in 2004 went on to garner 3.3 million admissions.

Another green monster also showed impressive performances at No.2 in the Korean chart. "Incredible Hulk" opened on 529 screens and grossed $2.8 million from 455,588 admissions during the weekend. Helmer M. Night Shyamalan's mystery "The Happening" also debuted at No.3 with a $1.2 million cume from 200,576 admissions during the weekend.

Having opened at No.2 in its first frame, "Sex and the City" slipped to No.4 in its second weekend, taking its cume to $4.9 million to date. "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" and "What Happens In Vegas..." maintained their No.4 and No.5 rankings, taking their cumes to $25.4 million and $4.2 million respectively.

Among local films, two recent releases with female protagonists managed to keep the chart from being totally occupied by Hollywood summer blockbusters. At No.7, "Black Heart," a romantic comedy about three mother and daughter pairs, took $260,000 from 40,760 admissions. "Girl Scout," a vehicle for Kim Sun-ah ("My Lovely Sam-Soon") ranked at No.9 taking its cume to $1.4 million from 219,090 admissions.

'My Mighty Princess' is bland, cliche

"My Mighty Princess"

"My Mighty Princess," directed by Kwak Jae-yong, revolves around a mighty female character who can beat up powerful martial art professionals -- if she wants to. The problem is that she does not bother to show off her awesome power even though the fate of the secret marital art community in Korea hangs in the balance. After all, she's a college student and she's busy chasing after handsome guys.

Director Kwak's new romantic comedy, which relies heavily on the visual effects of wire actions, starts from a cartoonistic assumption that a host of ancient martial art practitioners are living in the city of Seoul without revealing their true identity.

The movie's heroine So-hui (played y Shin Min-a) not only belongs to this secret community but also comes with a special privilege. Her father was one of the four masters who once flexed their martial muscles in the secret community and her mother, who died when So-hui was young, was a top-rated swordswoman.

Despite the glorious heritage, So-hui's attention is placed entirely on Jun-mo (Yu Gun), a good-looking ice-hockey player who drives an expensive Suzuki motorcycle in and outside campus. So-hui, born with unusually powerful strength that often surprises her friends in college, wants to win the heart of Jun-mo by joining the ice hockey club, but his mind is steered toward someone else.

So-hui's father (Choi Jae-seong) enlists help from Il-young (On Ju-wan), a quirky, motorcycle-obsessed college student who practiced martial arts together with So-hui when they were young kids. Nonetheless, So-hui does not pay much attention to her childhood buddy Il-young because she is competing hard to become Jun-mo's girlfriend.

This silly set-up, which might please and entertain high school audiences to some extent, takes an outrageous turn when So-hui's father is attacked by Black Tiger, an evil character with sly eyes and an embarrassing smirk. All of a sudden, So-hui transforms into a martial art super heroine who seems at once innocent and powerful.

A powerful female character and pathetically weak male counterparts? This sounds familiar, especially when you have watched "My Sassy Girl," a blockbuster hit by the same filmmaker that brought Jun Ji-hyun and Cha Tae-hyun to Asia-wide stardom.

"My Mighty Princess," as the title unequivocally suggests, follows Kwak's trademark formula: a strong female character and a weaker male counterpart get romantically and comically involved with each other.

Unfortunately, Shin Min-a is not Jun Ji-hyun. Shin looks charming and innocent throughout the film, but except for her flying tricks, there is few ground to tout her as a categorically domineering character that was achieved by Jun.

There is a serious problem with male characters in "My Mighty Princess," as well. Both Yu Gun and On Ju-wan might pass as handsome boys who can wow high school (or younger) girls, but neither of them shows off a discernable cinematic quality that is comparable to what Cha Tae-hyun did for "My Sassy Girl." Yu Gun's handsome boy character, who falls in love with a far older police officer, is absurd at best, and On Ju-wan's Il-young fails to spark any meaningful interest as a multilayered character, even though he supposedly holds the key to unlock the petty and predictable mystery surrounding the decades-long strife in the martial art community.

As with Kwak's other romantic comedy films, "My Mighty Princess" falls into a tear-jerking melodramatic climax that is utterly devoid of fresh inspiration and dramatic impact.

The movie will hit theaters on June 26 after a delay of more than two years, and it seems like that distributors had had many valid reasons to delay the release. The film's flimsy storytelling, a bland mixture of comedy and martial art sequences and poor characterization are hardly a promising recipe for box office.

One positive aspect, though, is that the film demonstrates a fairly high level of wire action sequences helped by DTI, Korea's top computer graphics company, and Dion Lam, a renowned martial art director from Hong Kong.

Sul 'Returns' as Kang Cheol-jung

By Lee Hyo-won
Staff Reporter

Actor Sul Kyoung-gu, front, resumes his role as hardball detective in
"Public Enemy Returns." / Courtesy of CJ Entertainment

This year has so far marked the return of many screen heroes, such as Indiana Jones and Rambo ― and the antihero Kang Cheol-jung. In "Public Enemy Returns," Sul Kyoung-gu ("Public Enemy," 2002; "Another Public Enemy," 2005) brazenly exhibits his sixth sense for acting as the diehard detective. Cheol-jung does not let his boss ― or the audience ― down in this funny, street-smart sequel, which also raises some critical social issues.

With disheveled hair, an unwashed windbreaker and a scar here and there, Cheol-jung is always diving headfirst into crime scenes. After 15 years of close calls with death, he's seen and done it all. The most notorious criminals sheepishly surrender to this thug of a man, who recklessly beats men twice his size, referees duels between schoolboys and openly accepts small bribes.

And of course, when a situation calls for good cop, bad cop tactics, we can guess the role Cheol-jung takes. But it's hard not to develop an affinity for this flawed man, who's seen getting seriously offended by a third grader's joke and submitting to his little daughter.

In "Return," Cheol-jung is the same disheartened man. He decides to quit once and for all when he is unable to get a proper bank loan for his house. His boss, detective Um (Kang Sin-il), files away the resignation form with a dozen more such "whines" from Cheol-jung. But he's serious this time.

However, a high school murder case draws Cheol-jung back into the task force ― or more precisely, the promise of a retirement grant does. A 17-year-old boy, the head of a gang of troublemakers, is found dead in his classroom. What appears to have been a skirmish among juvenile delinquents, however, takes an unexpected twist when the dead boy's fingerprints match those found in an unsolved homicide.

While investigating the dead boy's friends, Cheol-jung senses that their new boss, Geoseong Group CEO Lee Won-sul (Jung Jae-young), may be involved. Cheol-jung learns that the convict-turned-businessman brainwashes schoolboys and molds them into little devilish tools of murder. Their underage status prevents their fingerprints in crime scenes from being detected, and when they do get caught, their zeal for Geoseong keeps them quiet.

But Cheol-jung does not back down, and is determined to annihilate the public enemy. Continuing the tradition of the "Public Enemy" franchise, "Returns" eschews the cat-and-mouse game typical to the detective genre, and the battle between Cheol-jung and Won-sul is more like one between two dogs.

The film is well crafted, with complex layers of narrative unfolding in an organic form, interjected with just the right amount of comic relief. Compared to its rather grave prequels, "Returns" is much more determined to make you laugh, particularly by downright making fun of the police.

Yet some might find this movie more disturbing than previous ones as it involves teenage crime. Angst-ridden troublemakers, Cheol-jung says, will become either thugs or cops. Cheol-jung does manage to dissuade a few kids from becoming felons. But what will happen to them for sure, nobody knows. It is a bittersweet reminder of the soaring number of underage offenses in Korea.

The beauty of the movie lies in the unforgettable glances, grimaces and gestures of the actors. The magical casting does not end with Sul and Jung, but includes other eccentrically talented actors such as Lee Mun-sik, Kang Sin-il, and Yoo Hye-jin, and charismatic veteran Moon Sung-keun also makes a brief appearance. Fresh young actors also dazzle the silver screen with their uninhibited acting.

Great expectations for the film are reflected by the crowded press screening and overbooked public previews, where at one Seoul theater, people were willing to sit on the aisle steps to catch the flick before its box office release. High anticipation is of course displayed by the palpable PPL (product placement) ― advertisements ranging from drinks and restaurants to cell phones.

"Returns" currently tops the online reservation ranking ― the first Korean movie in 11 weeks to do so since "The Guard Post" ("GP506"), according to major portal site Maxmovie and the Korean Film Council. Big Hollywood movies trail behind, including Dreamworks animation "Kung Fu Panda" and "The Incredible Hulk." This may be an auspicious sign for the struggling Korean film industry, which marked a record low in May.

Now showing in theaters. 15 and over. 125 minutes. No English subtitles. CJ Entertainment.

Yoo Ji-tae Receives Japan Short Film Award

By Lee Hyo-won
Staff Reporter

Actor-director Yoo Ji-tae

Yoo Ji-tae, 32, won an award not as an actor, but as a director at Japan's 2008 Short Shorts Film Festival Asia, Wednesday. His third short film "Out of My Intention" won him the Special Mention Award at the fifth edition of the movie event, which came to a close Sunday in Tokyo.

Yoo is better known as a star of movies, such as the Cannes Grand Prix-winner "Old Boy" (2003) and mellow love story "Ditto" (2000). He made his directorial debut with "Bike Boy," which won the audience award at the 2003 Busan Asian Short Film Festival.

"Out of My Intention" is his third directorial project and second to win an award in Japan. In 2005, "How Does the Blind Dream" won the Fuji Film award for excellent work. All three films were screened at the Short Shorts Film Festival Asia. After serving on the jury of the competition section last year, Yoo returned as a special seminar guest.

His recent work, like his other works, is about love. Telling the story of a middle-aged man who reminisces about his first love while driving around, it stars veteran actor Lee Dae-yeon and young actress Jo An. It was released in Korea in March.

Film depicting father-son N. Korean defectors to open

The temporary division of the Korean peninsula made at the end of the Second World War was made permanent at the end of the 1950-53 Korean War, which ended in a truce, not a peace treaty. Korea is still two – North and South – to this date.

In recent years, the number of North Korean defectors has been increasing and every year over 1,000 North Koreans defect to South Korea via China or Southeast Asian nations every year.

In total about 10,000 North Koreans currently live in South Korea.

Despite a growing number of North Koreans who risk their lives to find asylum in South Korea, the refugee issue has rarely gotten attention in the media here, much less on the silver screen.

Since the issue can be regarded as politically sensitive, few movies have tackled the issue so far. But a soon to be released picture is about to shine the spotlight on the arduous and risky process of defectors coming south.

Crossing, directed by Kim Tae-gyoon deals with the miserable reality faced by North Korean defectors. It is based on the true stories of dozens of North Korean defectors, including some involved in the March 2002 incident in which 25 defectors pushed their way past Chinese guards into the Spanish Embassy in Beijing.

In the film, Yong-su (played by Cha In-pyo), a North Korean in a mining town in the country's northeast, leads a tough life with his wife, Yong-hwa and his 11-year-old son Jun-i.

When he finds out that his wife is sick, he sees no other option but to cross the border to China to make money to buy medicine for her treatment.

While in China, he falsely believes that he can get more money in the form of special subsidies if he contacts South Korean officials in China, but this decision lands him in South Korean territory, turning his status into that of a North Korean defector.

While Yong-su is transferred to Seoul, his wife dies and this pushes Jun-i to cross the border himself to reunite with his father.

Audiences can feel that the movie is like a documentary rather than a drama since its realistic details are sharpened to perfection by rendering the suffering of North Koreans as it is.

North Korean defectors' organizations supported the film project by offering detailed descriptions of the situation in the North and lending photographs that were used as references for the film.

The production team also interviewed more than 100 North Korean defectors. It took more than a year to interview people and gather information before filming began.

The movie has drawn interest overseas before it is to open in Korea. It premiered in Washington D.C. in April for the meeting of the North Korea Freedom Coalition. It is also scheduled to show at the European Parliament in July.

It will open in theaters across South Korea June 26.

Kim Soo-mi, "Lee Sang-woo, If I had a daughter, I would give her to him"

Lee Sang-woo has transformed from Koo Se-ju to 'Joon'.

Lee Sang-woo, who captured women's hearts in SBS "First Wives' Club", is attempting to capture female movie goers as an innocent, charming man in the movie "Beyond All Magic".

If Koo Se-ju in "First Wives' Club" was the wealthy, good-looking, well-mannered, ideal man, the Lee Sang-woo in "Beyond All Magic" is the awkward charming boy you remember as your first love.

Lee Sang-woo plays Joon, who provokes the evil intentions of three mother-daughter couples. With his lacking yet bright, uncorrupted spirit, he shows Nam-hee (Shin Hye-jin) the forgotten feelings of love, Kan-nan (Kim Soo-mi) the wonderful memories of her 20s, and Na-rae (Lee Da-hee) the importance of family.

Interest for Lee Sang-woo comes from more than the three characters in the movie. After the press conference, the message board was filled with messages such as "Lee Sang-woo seems warm-hearted" and "His acting, body, and looks are all perfect".

Kim Soo-mi, who also starred with him, said, "It's weirder if you aren't attracted to good-looking and innocent Lee Sang-woo. If I had a daughter, I would keep him in mind for a son-in-law".

"Beyond All Magic", which outlines the human love story of three mother-daughter couples and an innocent young man, airs on the 12th.

The power of words, jewels that give dramas life

If one word repays a thousand debts, then one word makes a drama shine.

In KBS "DdukBaeGi" on the 11th, Man-bong (Kang Kyeong-joon), who is accused of stealing a wallet, states his innocence. He says, "I'm a fan of Na Hoon-ah. There's something I learned from him, and I will show you", and unzips his pants. The lines parody a scene from Na Hoon-ah's recent press conference.

The fitting lines that make us slap our knees unknowingly. Because of Man-bong's one line, "DdukBaeGi" feels newer.

Many dramas have produced well-known lines. The most well-known is 'I'll break it all', by Shim Eun-ha in "Trap of Youth", 'Are you hurting? I'm hurting too', by Lee Seo-jin in "Damo", 'You're inside here', by Lee Dong-geon in "Lovers in Paris", and 'Look at your state', by Han Ye-seul in "Fantastic Couple". There are more, too many to list.

"On Air", a drama that outlined the truth of working in a broadcasting company, had many famous lines. "How are there double winners for the best award? Is this for perfect attendance? Is this for good conduct?" and "Doing your best is not what makes a pro. You have to be good". and "To an actress, scandals are not scary. Time is".

But not all lines make the drama shine. One misplaced line makes viewers criticize the drama. For example, in "Ah-hyeon Dong's Madam", a line said, "Aren't male entertainers so funny on variety shows these days? They go crazy and are scared on a helicopter". This line alluded to the variety program "Infinity Challenge". Fans of the show criticized the drama, and the cursing in the drama was also an object of criticism.

Generally, dramas that produced famous lines became popular, and there were always famous lines in popular dramas. Do famous lines and a drama's popularity go hand in hand? Even today, drama writers are working hard to write excellent lines. We will look forward to more lines that make dramas shine like jewels.

Yoo Seung-ho, 'Ideal girl is Kim Tae-hee'

While on a SBS entertainment news program, Yoo Seung-ho talked about his ideal girl and acting career.

He said, "My ideal girl is a cute girl. I like actress Kim Tae-hee".

At the reporter's question if the title of 'the nation's younger brother' was overwhelming, he said, "It feels good. They recognize me and they like the movies I come out in".

He revealed that the reason why he started acting was crackers. "When I was young, I used to cry when told to cry because my mom would buy me crackers".

After rising as the 'nation's younger brother' with "The Legend" and "King and I", his movie "Unforgettable" premiered on the 8th.

[Interview] Moon Geun-yeong... after twenty, her harsh coming-of-age

The nation's younger sister, female student, rumors, and woman wearing men's clothes. Anyone can explain their lives in several words. If 21-year-old actress Moon Geun-yeong were to sum up her life, these four words will surface. Everyone who knows her agrees to these words and is curious about them. They also wanted to hear her true thoughts about these words. In the past, she was liked by young and old for her innocent image from "My Little Bride" and many commercials. But after her disappointing movie "Love Me Not", it was hard to see her in dramas or movies.

So three years of inactivity. Now, her first steps of her 20s will be as a 'woman dressed in men's clothes', as shocking as a 'high school student who married too early'. In the September SBS drama "Painter of the Wind", she is playing Shin Yun-bok, who is rumored to have gone in as a palace artist dressed as a man.

For Moon Geun-yeong, acting was a series of risks like these. As an actress, Moon Geun-yeong's life is not inferior to hers. As soon as she became a young woman after being the 'nation's younger sister', the thing that found her was evil rumors. Who can say Moon Geun-yeong only walked across the broad highway?

- Is the title of the 'nation's younger sister' overwhelming? If it is, how does it feel?
"The words 'younger sister' is pressure to the 'actress Moon Geun-yeong'. Because I can't always stay as a younger sister

Cha In-pyo - Sin Ae-ra couple, absorbed in boxing

Exercise together three times a week... display of affection

Cha In-pyo has been sweating in a boxing arena with his wife Sin Ae-ra for three weeks. In the midst of their busy schedules, they exercise together three times a day, taking care of their health and showing off their love. Cha In-pyo recently said, "A friend introduced me to boxing. I thought it was an extreme sport but it has good effects and it's fun, so I do it with Sin Ae-ra".

"After starting boxing, Sin Ae-ra jokes and puts on her boxing gloves and tells me to hit her if we have a fight. I've exercised a lot at fitness clubs, but boxing is better because we can both enjoy it".

Cha In-pyo, who used to be a leading 'best body', destroyed his body for the movie "Crossing". It was to show his character more realistically. He has finished filming and started exercising again. "Sin Ae-ra doesn't really like the muscular type. I thought that boxing would be more effective than building muscle".

Cha In-pyo is awaiting the premiere of "Crossing", which outlines the joys and sorrows of North Korean refugees' lives.

Kim Ah-joong, the best star that a matchmaking program produced

Matchmaking programs are famous for being the birthplace of many stars. Entertainer hopefuls catch the eyes of viewers and management companies as they work with other stars and reveal their talents.

There are many stars who have used programs such as KBS "War of Roses", MBC "Kang Ho-dong's ChunSengYunBun", and SBS "X-Man" as stepping stones to debut as actors.

We picked the best five stars that matchmaking programs produced

#1 Kim Ah-joong

Kim Ah-joong, who became a star after "200 Pounds Beauty", first showed her face on a 2004 MBC show "Love Survival".

She charmed the male stars, such as Rain, Hyeon Bin, Seo Kyeong-Seok, and Yoon Jeong-soo, with her foreign looks and her intelligence. She became a couple with Rain and the center of attention. She also appeared in "Emperor of The Sea", "Bizarre Bunch", and "200 Pounds Beauty".

#2 Yoon Jeong-hee

Elegant and quite Yoon Jeong-hee doesn't seem to fit well with game shows, but she is also from a matchmaking program.

She drew attention in 2002 KBS "War of Roses" as she melted the worries of Shinhwa's Lee Min-woo. Yoon Jeong-hee competed with Lim Seong-eon, Kim Bin-woo, and Choi Ha-na.

#3 Seo Ji-hye

Seo Ji-hye is one that overcame humiliation in matchmaking programs. Although she was in the second season of "War of Roses" in 2003, she didn't survive long.

But she left a lasting impression, and became the leading role for "Voice Letter" and MBC "Shin Don". She rose to stardom, and many male stars who ignored her then regret it now.

#4 Jeon Hye-bin

Through matchmaking programs, Jeon Hye-bin showed the charm that she couldn't show as a singer. And she became a 'thunder star'.

In 2003, she captured all the love of the men in MBC "Kang Ho-dong's ChunSengYunBun" when she kept turning in her dances. At that time, she received the nickname of "Lee Sa-don", which implies that she spins for 24 hours.

#5 On Joo-wan

On Joo-wan is the only male star that a matchmaking program produced. The stage was "War of Roses". It had changed its format for regular men to meet female stars, and On Joo-wan drew attention.

He was small and normal-looking and was always expected to be dropped first, but he survived with his unique wit and confidence.

Lee Dong-geon "I want to get married. As soon as possible"

"I want to get married. If possible, I want to before I go to military service".

Lee Dong-geon, who returned with MBC "When It's At Night", drew attention when he confessed that he wanted to get married as soon as possible.

On the set, he explained, "After recently experiencing an unfortunate incident, I wanted to get married as soon as possible. I'll be going to military service around next year and I want it to be before then".

The reason is his parents. He wants to show his parents, who are filled with sadness from the loss of one of their two sons, that he is living well. "I think if a new person comes into our family, I'll feel more comfortable too. Even for me, I think that a lover or a wife can fill the emptiness I feel".

Lee Dong-geon, who recently lost his brother, experienced many psychological changes. One of these was his opinions about relationships and marriage. He said his ideal girl was "someone who was not famous, has many life experiences, mature, and tolerant".

Because he had been famous since he was young, many of his girlfriends were co-workers. There have been two instances of serious relationships. He remembered, "Before, feelings were important, but there was always something that didn't work out".

"I'm not very close with others, and I am also very shy and introverted. So I hope I meet someone who can complete me and lead me".

With these thoughts, it seems it will be hard for Lee Dong-geon to meet someone. Because he likes being alone and doesn't like going on blind dates. In addition, he doesn't want to meet someone in the same line of work as him.

"I don't think I am very attracted to people I meet through others. I'm also not used to those places. I feel like getting to know a person after meeting them is most important, but on blind dates, there's nothing like that. Thinking about it now, I think it'll be hard to meet a good person. Hahaha".

Lee Dong-geon's definition of lovers goes beyond loving them but also connect with his family. His thoughts had changed after experiencing a shocking incident. He hopes that his family can find peace again through his marriage and keep the peace.
