Champions League Best XI
Villa, Drogba, Cruz, Miller, Postiga, Rooney and Robinho were all absolutely superb, making this task a really thankless one!
It was one if those rounds when forwards around Europe decided to make themselves count, all at the same time. No surprise then, that only three defenders feature in the best eleven!
Manchester United, Porto, Celtic, Lyon, Real Madrid and Valencia won with plenty to spare, while Chelsea, CSKA Moscow, Roma, Milan and Inter picked up, narrow but hugely significant wins.
Surprisingly, Champions League finalists Arsenal and Barcelona both lost; both 1-0; both away from home!
This week's best line up in a very Argentine 3-3-1-3.
Goalkeeper
1. Christiansen (FC Copenhagen): An absolutely fabulous display on a night when everything went wrong for his team. United won fair and square, but he did not deserve to see three go past him.
Defenders
2. Boulahrouz (Chelsea): Had Ronaldinho in his pocket. That's about all!
3. Cris (Lyon): The French champions have yet to concede in this tournament, despite the sensational brand of football which has seen them score eight, and the Brazilian doesn't get enough recognition for his work.
4. Mertesacker (Werder Bremen): The 22-year-old German international was solid as a rock, and is beginning to forge a really solid bartnership with Naldo.
Midfielders
5. Michael Essien (Chelsea): Absolute dynamite against Barcelona, who never looked comfortable in midfield. Deco, Xavi, Edmilson, Gio, and Iniesta - he hounded them all.
6. Kallstrom (Lyon): Despite another Juninho master-class, it was the youngster who caught the eye with a complete display as Dynamo Kiev were beaten into pulp.
7. Anderson (Porto): Ran at, through and past Hamburg, time and again, to show what all the fuss linking him to Barcelona has been over. Some fabulous assists as Porto ran riot.
8. Dudu (CSKA Moscow): Spartak's number 20 played the perfect number 10, terrorizing the Arsenal defense, creating opporunities for his forwards, and having a go himself every once in a while. The best player on the pitch by a country mile.
Forwards
9. Robinho (Real Madrid): What an impact! Given a rare start, the youngster channelled all the frustration perfectly to give Real just the big win they needed at such a crucial juncture. Too indisciplined for Capello, or too good for him?
10. Kenny Miller (Celtic): A perfect display up front, capped off by a couple of superb goals to drive Celtic towards qualification.
11. Julio Cruz (Inter): Scored the two goals that might well help salvage Inter's Champions League campaign.
Others
David Villa was in sensational form as Valencia pit one foot into the knock-out stages.
Drogba put his heart and soul into the game, despite carrying a knock. Worked ever so hard, and rightfully scored the sensational winner.
Rooney didn't score, but put in a complete display from a roaming left-sided position that he is now making his own.
Postiga's display was a very pleasant surprise, despite Hamburg's poor defense.
Juninho fired one in from just outside the box, like few can, and assisted Malouda and Kallstrom as Lyon wrapped it up with plenty of time to spare. Believe it or not, he was injured, and played for only an hour.
Bruno Alves, ?mberas, Nesta and Helguera all put in solid displays, for Porto, CSKA Moscow, Milan and Real Madrid respectively. |

Tuesday's Champions League review
GROUP A
Chelsea must wait to ensure progression from Group A, but a 2-2 draw at Barcelona puts them in the box seat.
The Catalans twice went ahead through Deco and Eidur Gudjohnsen, though Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba - in the 90th minute - earned Chelsea a point.
Werder Bremen ran riot away at Levski Sofia to put pressure on Barca and condemn the Bulgarians to bottom spot.
Nikolay Mihailov scored an own goal and further strikes from Frank Baumann and Torsten Frings meant it finished 3-0.
GROUP B
Bayern Munich secured their place in the knockout stages with a goalless draw against Sporting Lisbon.
But Bayern will have to wait to claim top spot in Group B after a disappointing display in Germany.
Julio Cruz earned Inter Milan a crucial 1-0 victory away at Spartak Moscow that lifts them up to second in the group.
Cruz slotted into the roof of the net with just a minute on the clock after some sloppy defending and good work from Zlatan Ibrahimovic down the right.
GROUP C
Liverpool ensured their qualification to the knockout stages with a superb 3-0 victory at home to Bordeaux.
Luis Garcia bagged a brace and Steven Gerrard scored his first of the season, while Fernando Menegazzo was sent off for headbutting John Arne Riise.
PSV will join Liverpool in the last 16 after their 2-0 win against 10-man Galatasaray in Eindhoven.
The Turkish side had Stjepan Tomas sent off and Timmy Simons and Arouna Kone struck to hand PSV all three points.
GROUP D
Valencia fought hard to secure their qualification with a 2-2 draw away in Ukraine against Shakhtar Donetsk.
Twice the Group D leaders came from behind through Fernando Morientes and Roberto Ayala, after Rodrigues Jadson and Luis Fernandinho had notched.
Roma are heavy favourites to join them in the last 16, despite being held 1-1 at home to Greek side Olympiacos.
Julio Cesar put the visitors ahead but Francesco Totti levelled - after he had missed a penalty. |
