La Liga - Barca Mata bid rejected

Valencia are reported to have rejected Barcelona's 20 million bid for Spain winger Juan Manuel Mata.

Despite being in financial difficulties, Los Che have held firm on high transfer fees for the likes of David Villa and David Silva and - despite being one of the lowest-paid first-team players at the Mestalla - Mata is being treated with the same attitude.

"We know that he is a great player who is young and needs protecting and should stay with Valencia," Valencia president Manuel Llorente was quoted as telling El Mundo Deportivo.

The newspaper also said that Valencia were refusing to increase his salary of around 600,000 euros (£500,000) per season.

The 21-year-old has been a regular and broken into the Spain set-up since he joined from Real Madrid's reserves in 2007.

Player Ratings: Valencia 2-0 Arsenal
Arsenal suffered their first pre-season defeat at the hands of Valencia, and Goal.com was on hand to rate the players...

Valencia

Miguel Angel Moya - 8 - Would have been relieved to be back in goal after his midfield stint in midweek, and looked calm and assured throughout.

Miguel - 7- Provided plenty of attacking venom down the right, but his final ball was often lacking.

Alexis - 7 - Dealt with Bendtner and Van Persie sufficiently during the first half.

Angel Dealbert - 7 - An impressive showing from the youngster, who did not look fazed by the opposition at all.

Pablo Hernandez - 7 - Showed plenty of the skill that earned him a Spanish call-up recently, but could have improved his decisions in the final third.

Carlos Marchena - 6 - A typical midfield performance from Marchena, disrupted the play, but often resorted to some cynical challenges.

Ever Banega - 9 - Definitely the best player on the pitch, who appears to be settling in perfectly ahead of the new season.

David Silva - 8 - Showed some great touches and got past his man regularly, but should have done better with some chances.

Juan Mata - 7 - Combined well with Silva, but drifted out of the game on occasions.

Nikola Zigic - 6 - Won a few headers as usual, but failed to contribute much else.

Subs

Bruno - 7 - Looked solid throughout, and lent valuable support going forward.

David Navarro - 6 - Had a shaky start once he came on, but once he settled he won some crucial challenges.

David Albelda - 7 - Basically replaced Marchena in midfield, picking up a yellow card for his troubles.

Ruben Baraja - 6 - Did well defensively once coming on, but did not provide too much in an attacking sense.

Joaquin - 8 - An accomplished performance from the tricky winger, who showed just how good he can be when in the mood. Assisted both goals.

Michel - 8 - Took his goal brilliantly and was a constant menace, but also executed a pathetic dive.

Miku - 7 - Only made a brief appearance, but showed some good touches.

David Villa - 7 - Was having an absolutely awful game, including a missed penalty, but showed how dangerous he is by clinically finishing the last chance of the game.

Arsenal

Manuel Almunia - 8 - Did what he had to in the first half, and pulled off one great save from Mata.

Emmanuel Eboue - 7 - A decent performance at right-back, where he once again showed that he is more useful in the attacking third.

William Gallas - 7- Looked fairly comfortable, although he took far too many risks with the offside line.

Johann Djorou - 6 - Was exposed by Silva and Mata on occasions, and also walked the offside tight-rope.

Gael Clichy - 8 - A calm performance, that forced Valencia to look to the other wing for any joy. Also lent good support in attack.

Abou Diaby - 7 - Showed some great touches, and went on a couple of strong runs through midfield.

Alex Song - 7 - Made a nuisance of himself in midfield, but gave away the ball on occasion.

Cesc Fabregas - 7 - A fairly quiet game by his standards, but still showed some pieces of brilliance.

Andrey Arshavin - 7 - Provided some great runs, but also a lot of misplaced first-time passes, when there were easier options.

Robin Van Persie - 7 - Was a constant menace, and unleashed a couple of shots that did not miss by much.

Nicklas Bendtner - 5 - Fairly anonymous, apart from winning a few headers.

Subs

Lukasz Fabianski - 6 - Could not really be blamed for either goal, but made a hash of a couple of regulation crosses.

Bacary Sagna - 7 - Provided as much attacking threat as Eboue once coming on, whilst looking better defensively.

Mikael Silvestre - 7 - Made a few strong challenges, but his lack of pace was exposed.

Armand Traore - 5 - A very shaky and inconsistent performance, and was lucky not to give away a penalty for a blatant foul on Joaquin.

Kieran Gibbs - 7 - Slotted into midfield and looked calm, but did not provide too much of an attacking threat.

Aaron Ramsey - 7 - Looked at home against Valencia's tough midfield, but could not provide an attacking breakthrough.

Fran Merida - 5 - Did not make much of an impression after coming on, and his poor free-kick led to the second goal.

Theo Walcott - 7 - As always, got past his man with tremendous pace, but his final decisions were poor.

Eduardo - 6 - Largely anonymous after an encouraging start, when he should have scored with a point blank header.

La Liga - Valencia secure £64m loan
Eurosport - Sun, 23 Aug 18:56:00 2009

Valencia have secured a loan of 74 million euros (£64m) which they plan to use to acquire a stake of 72.5 per cent stake in the club in an attempt to stabilise the cash-strapped club.

Local bank Bancaja agreed to lend the cash to the club's charitable foundation and the Valencia regional government, the Generalitat, has guaranteed the loan.

The foundation plans to buy the remaining 1.53 million shares available in a capital increase, which has already raised around 18.75m euros, they added.

"From this point a new era of stability begins and the players can concentrate fully on their game," club president Manuel Llorente said. "We have saved a very difficult and worrying situation."

Valencia's foundation said in a statement it planned to make shares available to those who had not been able to take part in the initial phase of the capital increase.

"At last the club is being returned to the Valencia fans," Llorente said.

The club finished sixth in the league last season and qualified for the potentially lucrative Europa League. But their financial woes forced a halt to construction on a new stadium and officials said they might have to sell prize assets such as Spain internationals David Villa and David Silva.

The club's debts of some 500 million euros rival those of Real Madrid and Barcelona but they lack the vast earning power of the two Spanish giants.
