An Olivier Giroud brace secured a 2-0 win over Southampton for Arsenal, who had Artur Boruc to thank for the first goal.
Southampton’s success this season has been built on sturdy foundations this season and they began as expected with a high line couple paired with some impressive pressing.
Arsenal were in imperious form though and hit the post twice – first through Jack Wilshere and then Aaron Ramsey – before Southampton goalkeeper Boruc’s moment of madness.
Having received a rudimentary back pass from Nathaniel Clyne, he dithered before attempting to Cruyff turn himself out of trouble – Giroud read it though and slotted home.
The visitors improved as the half wore on and would have been at parity had it not been for the smart reflexes of Wojciech Szczesny, who did supremely well to push a Jay Rodriguez scissor kick wide of the goal five minutes before half-time.
MAN OF THE MATCH:
Olivier Giroud (Arsenal): Where would the Gunners be without this man? At times maligned last year, he is reborn this and led the line well and grabbed a brace to secure the win.
PLAYER RATINGS:
Arsenal: Szczesny 7, Sagna 6, Koscielny 6, Mertesacker 6, Gibbs 6, Arteta 7, Ramsey 7, Wilshere 6, Ozil 7, Cazorla 7, Giroud 8. Subs: Monreal 5, Rosicky 5, Walcott 5.

Champions League - Wilshere double gives Arsenal victory over Marseille
Champions League Group F, Emirates Stadium – Arsenal 2 (Wilshere 1, 65) Marseille 0

Jack Wilshere struck twice to give Arsenal a 2-0 win over Marseille in Champions League Group F at the Emirates Stadium, but the Gunners are yet to secure a last 16 place.
Wilshere scored the only goal of the half inside just 30 seconds when Bacary Sagna’s ball forward found the England midfielder in space on the right wing. Wilshere drove into the box, cut onto his left foot and curled a shot into the far corner.
Arsenal then dominated possession but did little with it. Aaron Ramsey failed to turn in a Wilshere cross, and the next real chance came when Nicolas N’Koulou tripped Ramsey outside the box, the referee wrongly awarding a penalty. But Mesut Ozil saw his poor penalty easily saved by Steve Mandanda.
On 65 minutes, Wilshere doubled his tally and Arsenal’s lead, when Ramsey’s neat pass for Ozil, bursting into the box, was pulled back by the German for Wilshere to slot past the keeper.
MAN OF THE MATCH:
Jack Wilshere (Arsenal): His team were always in control, but their attack was often blunt. Wilshere provided the calm finishing to ensure that they didn't need to panic as the match progressed.
PLAYER RATINGS
Arsenal: Szczesny 6, Sagna 7, Mertesacker 6, Koscielny 6, Monreal 6, Ramsey 7, Flamini 6, Wilshere 7, Ozil 6, Rosicky 6, Giroud 6. Subs: Arteta 6, Walcott 6, Cazorla 6.
Marseille: Mandanda 6, Abdallah 5, N'Koulou 6, Mendes 6, Morel 6, Lemina 5, Romao 6, Ayew 5, Imbula 5, Khelifa 5, Gignac 5. Subs: Cheyrou 5, Thauvin 6, Valbuena 6. |

Premier League - Ramsey and Ozil shine as slick Arsenal move seven clear

Aaron Ramsey returned to haunt old club Cardiff by netting twice in a 3-0 win that saw Premier League leaders Arsenal move seven points clear at the top.
The Wales midfielder continued his blistering run of form when he was alert to guide Mesut Ozil's cross over home goalkeeper David Marshall with a looping header on 29 minutes.
Substitute Mathieu Flamini put a gloss on the scoreline when he bounded onto another Ozil pass to thump the ball beyond Marshall on 86 minutes from 14 yards.
Ramsey contributed his second goal of the day two minutes into injury time and his 13th goal for his club in all competitions this season when he walloped into the net from substitute Theo Walcott's pass with Cardiff caught on the break. Ramsey refused to celebrate his goals, but must derive enormous satisfaction from such an afternoon.
Ozil has now unearthed more assists than any other Premier League player this season since his £42 million summer move from Real Madrid, a price tag that is beginning to look like a huge bargain.
The winning margin was little more than Arsenal deserved for a largely dominant performance that should have earned them more goals, especially in the first half when Cardiff could hardly gain any meaningful period of pressure.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal): Who do you give it to? Ramsey or Ozil? We'll give it to Ramsey after the toss of a coin. Just so much class throughout this Arsenal side. They were a joy to watch at times. The bandwagon rolls on. At this rate, it will take some derailing.
PLAYER RATINGS
Cardiff: Marshall 6, Taylor 5, Caulker 6, Turner 7, Whittingham 5, Medel 5, Campbell 6, Kim 5, Mutch 6, Cowie 6, Theophile-Catherine 5. Subs: Cornelius 6, Odemwingie 5, Noone 6.
