Reading copying Bolton 'blueprint' - Coppell

Manager Steve Coppell wants to turn Reading into the new Bolton and establish the Royals as a long-term fixture in the Premiership.

Reading are on course for a top-10 finish from their debut campaign.

But Coppell is anxious the club does not suffer the same second-season plight which has afflicted both West Ham and Wigan this year.

He believes Bolton manager Sam Allardyce created the blueprint for how unfashionable newly-promoted clubs can flourish in the top flight.

Coppell said: 'There are certain role models within the Premiership who can provide lessons for clubs looking to maintain their status.

'The best of those would be Bolton and the way they have survived. They are the blueprint. You look no further than them and see what they do.'

Bolton, promoted to the Premiership in 2001, have finished in the top half of the table for the last three seasons.

They are currently fifth in the table and challenging hard for automatic Champions League qualification.

Allardyce was praised by Aidy Boothroyd for the same reasons only last week, with the Watford manager highlighting his innovative recruitment policy.

Boothroyd said: 'Sam thought about where his club was and he went and found an untapped market. He found out about Spain and got players like Ivan Campo. He got his free transfers like Jussi Jaaskelainen and improved his recruitment.'

Reading's promotion success and Premiership consolidation was built on young players but Coppell is now considering a change to his recruitment policy to ensure the club does not go stale.

He said: 'That is maybe what we have to do. The team that got promoted had two years invested in it. Can we be static or dormant in that position again?

'I don't think we can. We need a little bit more and where we get that from is still to be decided.

'I can't see anyone coming in to break the financial mould and the wage structure we have here. So it will be a little bit of an uphill task from that point of view.'

Coppell's immediate focus is on tonight's Premiership clash with Charlton at The Valley, when he will come up against long-time friend Alan Pardew.

Charlton hover outside the relegation zone by the slenderest of margins - just a single goal better off than Sheffield United.

Coppell signed Pardew when at Crystal Palace but he assured Charlton's relegation rivals there will be no favours on offer tonight.

'It is a real dogfight down there and I am grateful we are not in it,' said Coppell.

'I am mindful of the responsibility of all teams to be competitive right to the end.

'My players have played a lot of games and I will do what I feel is best for Reading. But my team, I hope, will reflect that.

'You go for a victory. It is a selfish game and unfortunately we have to do our jobs right. We get paid for winning games.'

Bolton 1-3 Reading: Late Doyle double wins it

Reading turned this Barclays Premiership game on its head in the last seven minutes thanks to two goals from Kevin Doyle to beat Bolton 3-1.

The Republic of Ireland striker took his tally for the season to 12 goals at the Reebok Stadium.

Stephen Hunt added a third in stoppage time to complete a remarkable and unexpected victory.

Bolton manager Sam Allardyce could hardly believe what was unfolding after seeing his team take the lead.

To add to his frustration three of his players were injured in a first half that was short on entertainment.

Nicky Hunt was the first to go in the 21st minute and was replaced by Lubomir Michalik.

Royals receive Seol ultimatum

Seol Ki-hyeon has threatened to leave Reading if boss Steve Coppell continues to leave him out of the team.

The 28-year-old has struggled to cement a spot in Coppell's first team and will have no choice but to leave the club if the situation does not change.

The South Korean international told the official website of the Asian Cup: "I am still thinking about my future.

"I definitely want to play more games next season.

"If I am not in the team next season, I will definitely have to find out whether another team wants a player like me."

The midfielder, who featured in 27 appearances for Reading in the last campaign, has told his manager of his desire to play on a regular basis and is hoping that the Royals' boss will take his request into consideration.

He added: "I have spoken with the manager and he knows how I am feeling. He said he doesn't like players who are happy to be out of the team.

"I don't know what will happen, but as a professional player I will keep doing my best and see what happens."
