'He's got her looks:' Royal baby makes first public appearance
LONDON — The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge gave the world a first glimpse of their newborn son Tuesday. The royal couple briefly emerged from St. Mary’s Hospital in London, carrying their baby wrapped in a blanket, and posed for pictures before an excited crowd of spectators.
A smiling Kate, wearing a baby blue polka dot dress, carried the future monarch outside the hospital so that he could be photographed by the dozens of international media members waiting outside.
“He’s got her looks, thankfully,” William said. “He’s got a good pair of lungs on him, that’s for sure.”
William added: “He’s a big boy, he’s quite heavy,” and laughed when a reporter asked him about the baby’s hair. ”He’s got way more than me, thank God,” he said.
The prince said the couple were “still working on a name.”
Kate said the birth had been “very emotional, such a special time.”
After a few minutes, they went back inside the hospital.
William left with the child minutes later, putting the baby into the back seat of a black Range Rover before driving the SUV away himself. He was expected to take their son to Kensington Palace, according to the official Clarence House Twitter account.
Prince Charles, after visiting the new baby of Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge at St. Mary’s hospital, told the media somewhat cryptically that the baby was “marvelous,” but that the gathered media would see for themselves in a minute.
Before the Prince Charles’ visit, Kate’s parents — Michael and Carole Middleton — also paid a visit to their new grandchild. Carole Middleton beamed and said the baby was “absolutely beautiful.”
Earlier in the day, Queen Elizabeth was treated to the roar of a 41 gun salute from near the Canada Memorial in Green Park to mark the birth of her great-grandson and the new third prince in the line of succession to her throne.
Giddy tourists and Britons thronged in their thousands to the park in front of the Queen’s home at Buckingham Palace where news of the first born child of Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge was proclaimed Monday evening on a wooden easel painted in good leaf.
From early morning Tuesday celebrants and photographers also crowded the back street leading to the Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s Hospital, Paddington hoping to catch a first glimpse of the royal baby.
Spirits soared before noon when a woman said to be Kate’s hairdresser arrived at the private ward where the as yet to be named princeling was born Monday afternoon. But as the first rain in weeks doused the spectators word came from the palace that the royal couple and their baby would not be going home until at least 6 p.m. local time, and possibly not until Wednesday morning.
While the guns of the King’s Troop, Royal Horse Artillery, boomed across Green Park in a very British tribute the bells of Westminster Abbey began to peal for three hours in honour of the new prince.
A 62 gun salute by the Honourable Artillery Company erupted further east at Tower Bridge as well as at parks across the United Kingdom.
