Honda Malaysia has announced that it will recall 21,956 units of the third-generation City (model year 2009) as well as 1,680 units of the second-generation Jazz (model year 2009 and 2010). The recall addresses problems with the lost motion springs and the retainers in the affected vehicles, with replacement of these to be carried out with countermeasure parts.
In the affected cars, the lost motion springs – which are compressed by rocker arms in normal engine use – may bend or break over time, resulting in irregular engine noise and potentially causing engine stalls. No crashes or injuries have been reported related to this issue.

“We sincerely apologise to our customers and deeply regret the inconvenience caused by this predicament. It is our priority to put our customers first,” Honda Malaysia’s managing director and CEO Yoichiro Ueno said in a statement.
“To address this issue, we will be writing to all the affected customers to send their vehicles to an authorised dealer as soon as they receive notification from us,” he said.
The company is in the midst of preparing the replacement parts. Necessary inspection and replacement will be carried out when the parts are ready, and all charges incurred in the inspection and replacement work will be borne by the company. Honda Malaysia added that all its current selling models are not affected.Share|

Honda India has announced that it would carry out preventive part replacement of Lost Motion Spring in the valve train for 57,853 units of 3rd Generation City, manufactured from November 2008 to December 2009. Lost motion springs, which are compressed by rocker arms in normal engine use, may bend or break over time resulting in abnormal engine noise and potentially causing engine stalling and problems in re-starting. Customers can check whether their car will be covered under this part replacement by submitting their 17 character alpha-numeric Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the Honda India website here.

The replacement would be carried out free of cost and the company will communicate directly with the owners of the cars which are covered under this part replacement. The dealerships have been updated about the part replacement and the new part is being dispatched to the dealerships in phases for smooth execution, to avoid any inconvenience to the customers.

TOKYO — Honda is recalling nearly 700,000 Fit, Freed and City compact cars around the world for a defective part that may cause the engine to stall.

No accidents have been reported related to the problem, but at least 72 complaints were filed in Japan, and 29 abroad, Honda Motor Co. spokesman Tomohiro Okada said today.

Recalled are 167,000 vehicles in Japan, 156,000 in China, and 233,000 in the rest of Asia, Tokyo-based Honda said. About 122,000 cars are being recalled in North America.

A spring was placed improperly in a small box inside the engine, so that, in some cases, the problem could cause the engine to stall, Okada said.
