Super Junior’s Sungmin shares thoughts on his acting debut
Super Junior’s Sungmin divulged a bit of his thoughts regarding his role in KBS 2TV’s drama, “President“.
Through the drama’s production conference (held on November 25th), Sungmin revealed:
“I have previously worked in musicals and one-act plays, but ‘President’ is my first official acting opportunity, making it no different from being my first project. I feel as if I’ve earned a very big inheritance by being able to work with such respectable acting seniors right from the start.
I feel 100 times more pressure because I’m worried about how I should portray my character, who is naive and blind to life’s problems, and acts on impulse and immaturity. Working alongside such talented actors has made me feel that much more pressure, to the point where my hands were shaking on the day of our first filming. My whole body felt congested after our first filming.
To conclude, my body is tired but my heart is joyful. I’m also anticipating the reviews on my new acting career. I hope people will give us their interest.“
“President” will air on December 8th.

First Lady Ha Hee-ra in KBS’s President
by javabeans | December 11, 2010 | 3 Comments
With Runaway Plan B now over, KBS turns its attention to new drama President, to air on Wednesdays and Thursdays opposite that other presidential show, Daemul. You can bet there’ll be a lot of interest in comparing the two, even though Daemul is heading into its final stretch and will only be overlapping with President for a couple weeks.
I’m also willing to bet that we’ll see a lot of comparisons between the two leading ladies, although one is a sitting president (Daemul’s Go Hyun-jung) and the other a wife to a congressman-turned-president (that’s this drama’s Ha Hee-ra, pictured here, who happens to be the real-life wife of the drama’s leading man Choi Su-jong).
As we all know, whether you love it or hate it, talk of First Ladies inevitably turns to dissections of her appearance. How she dresses. How she wears her hair. How she comports herself. Whether she’s a Jackie O or a Hillary. And so on. Already Ha’s character is being aligned more in the Jackie category, thanks to her elegant styling and classically chic clothing, which is built on a foundation of blacks and whites, mixed with solid bold colors. (Pearls, broaches, oversize sunglasses and long gloves are some particular favorites.) Since she’s also a strong-minded and intelligent university professor in her own right, perhaps she’s got a dash of Michelle Obama as well, although I suppose her luxury designer wardrobe and high-priced jewelry make her a bit inaccessible for that comparison.
What makes Ha’s character stand out is that she’s not a mere trophy wife, but takes an active part in campaigning for her husband when he jumps into the running for president. Bold and pro-active, she’s described as a “woman of steel.”

KBS’s President off to a slow start
by javabeans | December 15, 2010 | 22 Comments
The battle of the presidents has begun! Only, it wasn’t much of a battle with SBS’s Blue House drama Daemul leading the pack by a wide margin, drawing a 25.7% rating against KBS’s premiere episode of President, which had a 6.3%.
The numbers are a bit of a drop-off from the finale of Runaway Plan B, which signed off last week with a 13.6%. Despite the slow start, though, it seems like President is drawing initially favorable responses, and it’s still early days for the show. With Daemul nearing its end, the real question is how well it’ll perform once the big rival is out of the way.
Over on MBC, the “Korean Desperate Housewives” drama Home Sweet Home pulled its highest rating yet, nearing but unable to quite make it into double digits with a 9.9% rating.
President tracks the progress of an assemblyman (Choi Su-jong) as he runs for president with his strong, capable wife at his side (Ha Hee-ra). Their family includes three children, the eldest of whom was adopted and is played by Personal Taste’s In-hee Bot, Wang Ji-hye. The couple also has two biological children, a son played by idol star Sungmin of Super Junior (whose character name is likewise Sung-min) and a daughter played by Park Mi-jin.
Another pop singer is featured in the cast, Trax member Jay (J?), who received strong marks for his acting performance. He plays the secret son of our presidential candidate — scandalous! — who hears the truth of his father’s identity as an adult. And… then starts to “grow closer” with Wang Ji-hye… his biological father’s adopted daughter.
(ARRRRGH, Korean Dramas, why do you do this? Must you flirt with faux-incest at every turn?? Can you just imagine the headlines? “President’s Children Marry Each Other.”) (Confession: I gripe, but to be honest I AM intrigued. All of a sudden I have a lot more interest in the narrative possibilities here… Curses! It must be something in this melodrama-lovin’ Korean blood.)
Last but not least, playing a shrewd political consultant is sexy custard Kim Heung-soo (Invincible Lee Pyeong-gang).
