Part 1:
If the most beloved classics in Korea are Legend of Chun-Hyang and Hong Gil-Dong...
In Japan there is Chushingura (忠臣裝).
It is the tale of 47 samurai who begin revenge after their master is forced to commit suicide.
In order to avenge their master's honor they excuted a revolt.
In the end they suffered punishment by death but their prevailed loyalty touched the public.
Among the story of 實事, this half-fiction tale is still high in popularity.
A few years ago in 'Tales of the Unusual / 世にも奇妙な物語' which was also screened in Korea, in the 2nd episode,
the story on the subject matter of Chushingura appeared...
the role of main character 'Oishi Kuranosuke'
was supposed to be played by a prestigious, masculine, handsome actor...
(but when isn't it so? the hero is fixed to be handsome and brilliant~)
Butat last in that film they cast an actor who is acknowledged for hisskills, but one who was common and light, who did not have a hero-likeaura that was required for such epic drama.
why?
because that film had a twist to the story as a Chushingura parody!
With sweet concubine and some fortune.. but a nomad upon losing his master...
who planned on spending what's left of life to be happy as happy can be~ fine even if covered with dog poop~
Oishi, who was just going about living life loosely~
but when something instigates him, and he in turn is forced to lead a rebellion..
the 'small hearted man' image from his appearance was really fitting.
so let's get back to the point...
who are the Hong sisters?
the Hong sisters personally are not attached to 'Chun-Hyang' to any extent,
but among the classic characters they've drawn on
looking at how the character becomes a result of mix in with modern trend
one cannot under-appreciate their skills and talent but to respect
inSassy Chun-Hyang, unlike the Chun-Hyang traditional known for herchastity and devotion, the Chun-Hyang in here does not hang herself byone man.
instead she's a modern fox-like female character who chooses among men.
in My Girl, the heroine who is supposed to work honestly in accordance with Candy-type fantasy
is painted boisterous and materialistic in a refreshing comic way
if they can create a female con-artist who fancies money...
in Fantasy Couple, instead of a woman who oppresses her desires
riding against the notion that males like good woman who act nice
and instead displaying the notion of looking at self-asserting women as attractive
through a female character who is direct, and overly confident and maybe rude..
isn't this proof of their positively unbelievable skill.
What do they have in mind for Hong Gil-Dong? |

second half:
What do they have in mind for Hong Gil-Dong?
Like the hard-headed one we are familiar with
raised in an elite household with white skin and nobility flowing..
but a character who does not succomb to the era nor fate, with sharp gaze and undefeatable feeling?
a character who is both boyish yet like a youth who is hard to reckon?
in going through memory of the legends told in children's books this seems like the image remembered.
the Hong Gil-DOng who transcends from the past to modern era through the creation of the Hong sisters
is certainly the image held by Ju Ji-Hoon, that is possible for him to accomplish
no, it will be a character that only Ju Ji-Hoon can accomplish
Like when you see Han Chae-Yeong perhaps you could see Hwang Jini, but not Chun-Hyang...
and Lee Dae-Hae who only played innocent roles before she became a cute conwoman...
HanYe-Seul who was always lordly and fancy but the only ones who could seethe image of her with dishelved hair wearing Vietnamese skirt andhoarding jjajangmyeon noodle are the Hong sisters.
and the characters they create
will certainly be empathized and loved by the netizens together
we cannot know how the Hong Gil-Dong drawn by them is warped before we see him...
but since they are talks that if it isn't Ju Ji-Hoon, then there's no one for the Hong Gil-Dong of the Hong sisters,
the Hong Gil-Dong that the Hong sisters want to create is certainly a 'Ju Ji-Hoon trademark Hong Gil-Dong'.
It is not the case that this role wasn't given to other actors because they couldn't accomplish it...
but rather the picture of Hong Gil-Dong that the Hong sisters want to show off to the world is perfectly matched by Ju Ji-Hoon.
Furthermore... we should not limit our respect for Jo Hyeon-Jae.
(the fans should be proud of his choice ~)
an actor who's already appeared as lead character of an epic like Seo Dong's Ballad..
but who accepts a role based on his affection for a character in the drama instead of male ego
when you see him you see an actor who holds pure self-respect instead of vanity of a star
When you look at American dramas, it is not hard to see a top star appearing in one or two episodes as suppport role.
instead of appearing for fun, if the role matches them
then they embark on roles that will not obstruct the principal character.
..
In our counrty, this mindset is seen in the example of Cha In-Pyo for 'White Tower'.
At the time it was a major event for him to take a role of light importance which differed from the original novel.
It was so nice to see him do the same in film 'May 18' for taking a small role...
(dramaoknote: Cha In-Pyo also declined his fees for this film to encourage thefilm makers to produce this film which had historic relevance toKoreans)
JoHyeon-Jae's role is of much higher relevance than Cha In-Pyo's then, but for drama with a title 'Hong Gil-Dong', for such an experienced andwise actor to accept is indeed surprising.. (honestly I thought it wasa false report)
This was felt back in Goong and Mawang too, but Mr. Ju is really blessed as an actor by prominent actors around him.
In conclusion,
Ju Gil-Dong, brother Hyeon-Jae, You're great~ Really looking forward to it!
================
it seems this will be more like a 'fantasy sageuk' then 'fusion sageuk'...
