The leader, a livewire and worrier. Despite being the oldest, he's probably the most immature. He and Takuya practically grew up together and have a special bond, so they rely heavily on each other. His forte is in variety show hosting and frenetic dancing. Would do anything to get people to laugh, to the extent of being silly and outrageous. Self-proclaimed biggest SMAP fan who plays the group's own concert videos in his car. Probably one of the two worst members of the singing profession in Japan, he even made a joke out of it by calling himself tone-deaf. His sun sign is Leo and his SMAP colour is BLUE. Voted Best Actor three times, and despite his sunny and bright personality, excels really well in 'dark' roles.
Nakai is voted Japan's most successful host to date, eclipsing his 'mentor' Tamori. Besides SMAPxSMAP, he's now currently hosting TV music show Utaban on TBS for the 10th year, and is also a regular for many other TV shows, with the most prominent being Waratte Iitomo.

Takuya Kimura is intense, guileless, daring, hardworking, fair-minded, honest to a fault, high-strung, hates being bested at anything, and is incapable of "cutting corners". He was seen as the most westernised among members. Media has always regard both him and Nakai as being too protective of the younger members. The biggest physical risk-taker of the group (he's the first in SMAP to embark in dark roles as in Gift, Sleeping Forest and Sora Kara...), he is at the same time said to be the one with the "nerves of glass", taking all criticism to heart and brooding over it for weeks. Incapable of telling a lie, he makes a real effort nowadays not to let his face show his moods, but fans can still tell easily when he is troubled or happy, pleased or annoyed. The best singer and music-conscious member of the group, he has the most versatile singing style and the slickest dancing. Also one of the two most athletic. Though known to be good at whatever he takes up, his real loves are acting of any kind, and being part of a team working towards creating something together. Has also shown talent as a variety show producer. His sun sign is Scorpio and his SMAP colour is RED. Voted Best Actor for six times already, he's the "King of Dorama Ratings", having most of his doramas being turned to gold. He holds the title "Japan's Most Favourite Men" for the 12th year in a row.

Goro Inagaki is aloof, reserved and appreciates art and beauty. Probably the closest to Takuya, sharing most rooms with him every time the group has performances or concerts far from Tokyo. The least athletic (and the worst dancer) of the group, preferring intellectual pursuits, he is often teased for his "affected" taste in creature comforts. He is more inclined to stage and film acting. Nowadays he tends to forget his self-consciousness in SMAPxSMAP skits. His sun sign is Sagittarius and his SMAP colour is PINK. He's now an accomplished stage actor, and his single "Wonderful Life" which was the themesong of Tsuyoshi Kusanagi's 2004 hit dorama has sold well.

Tsuyoshi Kusanagi is serious, blur and gauche. He has become a very good actor, whilst on variety shows he uses the "SMAP member with the lowest profile" image to good effect. He is very athletic, having been a gymnast at school. The other worst professional singer, but probably the best dancer in the group. His sun sign is Cancer and his SMAP colour is YELLOW. Shingo Katori is boisterous, innocent, and a little wild. If Nakai is crazy, then Shingo can be crazier. Being roped in as the youngest at 11, the Big Two (Nakai and Takuya) were protective of him, even now. He looks up to Nakai as a 'big brother' and to Takuya as an inspiration (even as a 29-year-old, still behaves like a little boy in front of the Big Two). Apart from a definite talent as an illustrator, he is a good actor, and also excels as presenter/host of "experiencing new things" type of shows. His sun sign is Aquarius and his SMAP colour is GREEN. Voted Best Actor twice, he rode high on the popularity of Shinsengumi, an NHK Taiga/period drama, and are now active in movies.
Coming second after Nakai in hosting is probably Shingo. Besides SMAPxSMAP, Shingo has also appeared regularly in Waratte Iitomo. His own TV show, SmaSTATION is already in its 4th season.
