It`s Time For Bridge To Emerge From Cashley`s Shadow...
Posted 13/02/08 13:57EmailPrintSave
Despite this early warning that the tabs don't actually get things right all of the time, I sincerely hope that The Daily Mail got things spot on this morning when they claimed that Wayne Bridge will demand to leave Chelsea if he is left out of the side for the Carling Cup final.
I've long believed that Bridge is one of the most underrated players in the country, and that playing second fiddle to Cashley Cole is one of the less dignified roles in football.
Cole's form has been patchy this season, while Bridge has looked good on the few occasions that he has been given a chance. And yet it still seems that Cole is the favoured choice at left back.
A move to a club where he is first choice could be just the thing Bridge needs to prove that he is a superior option to Cole for England.
Tottenham perhaps, or even Liverpool. John Arne Riise has been poor this season, while Fabio Aurelio has been poor for much longer than that.
Quite why players of Bridge's calibre are satisfied with playing second fiddle, especially to rivals who are not significantly better than them, if at all, is something of a mystery.
If you're being charitable you could describe it as 'loyalty' (see; Ole Gunnar Solskjaer), but in this case it is probably more accurate to describe Bridge's situation as unambitious.
If Bridge moved away from Chelsea in search of 40-odd games a season, then England would have two excellent left-backs with genuine and realistic claims to the number three shirt.
With them both playing regularly we could compare and contrast; who really is the better and more consistent player? :pompom: :pompom: :pompom:
As it is, with only one of the two able to play on any one weekend, we have the far from ideal situation of Avram Grant essentially picking England's left-back.
So go on Wayne - have some stones and escape Cashley's shadow.

The Four Title-Deciding Factors...
Posted 13/02/08 13:03EmailPrintSave
Can Arsenal keep their bottle? Can ManYoo keep the Holy Trinity fit and fresh? Who exits Europe first? And can Chelsea find a way to shoehorn their players into being better than decent?
CAN ARSENAL KEEP THEIR 'BOTTLE'?
"Of course we can do it. As long as we keep on winning games, and keep everyone enjoying themselves," says Emmanuel Adebayor. But the question remains: At what point does the fun stop and the pressure start? This is a set of players who are not familiar with being in this position. It's now their title to lose and the only acceptable dropped points will be draws against ManYoo and Chelsea. Every other game is now must-win and will that pressure be too much to bear on the likes of Emmanuel Adebayor (23) and Cesc Fabregas (20)?
United fans can no longer crow that Arsenal are a one-man team or that they have no Plan B or that they're defensively soft, but they will still be using the word 'bottle' with a question mark until after April 12 at least. They will cite 2002-2003 when the Gunners were five points ahead and then lost to Blackburn and Leeds with the title at their mercy. Mind you, nobody should be made to play with a central defensive partnership of Gilberto Silva and Pascal Cygan...
CAN THE HOLY TRINITY STAY FIT?
Everyone now knows the statistic that Manchester United have not lost in the Premier League with Wayne Rooney on the pitch, but less well-documented is another stat: The trio of Wayne Rooney, Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez played together in only two of the eight matches in which United have dropped points this season. And they were draws against Arsenal and Spurs. Put plainly, United need those three players to do what they now need to do...win just about every remaining game.
Louis Saha is never fit enough for long enough to play more than a handful of games, while Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes are not the players of last season, never mind five seasons ago. They have three match-winners and those match-winners need to stay fit, fresh and not suspended. That could be difficult with another two trophies in the offing. Which brings us to...
WHO EXITS THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE?
Losing in the Champions League last 16 could possibly be the best thing to happen to Arsenal or ManYoo's title chances. Even Sir Alex himself has admitted that a real challenge on both fronts is practically impossible (it's got harder since 1999) and we have seen in recent years that Liverpool and Arsenal have reached European finals only by faltering in their domestic league.
Greater fatigue and greater risk of injury combining with the sheer bloody distraction of reaching a European final could de-rail a title challenge. Does one have to be sacrificed for the other? Will Chelsea take advantage if both Arsenal and ManYoo march on in Europe? The best thing for everyone could be a Liverpool win...
CAN CHELSEA ADAPT TO RETURNING PLAYERS?
Chelsea have undoubtedly thrived without John Terry, Frank Lampard, Michael Essien and Didier Drogba, quietly going about their business and staying in the title race despite missing what most consider to be their four most influential outfield players. We doubt Arsenal and ManYoo could have coped quite so admirably with similar losses. Desperate times often call for desperate efforts and they have turned their disadvantage into an advantage.
But now they slowly return and we have already seen Lampard and Michael Ballack struggle to dovetail together and Avram Grant must now make a decision on Drogba and his formation. He has to a) make a choice between him and Anelka, b) switch to a 4-4-2 and play both up front or c) push Anelka wide and keep a 4-3-3.
Then there's the small matters of whether he drops the ever-improving Alex for Terry and whether the back-to-form Claude Makelele loses his place to Essien.
The answers to all those questions could have a massive bearing on the title as, with home games against Arsenal and ManYoo still to come, they do hold no little power despite being down in third and generally considered to be outsiders for the title. But in order to do more than draw those big games (and potentially difficult away trips to Everton and Man City), they need to find the spark they failed to find against Liverpool. Finding the right way to play Anelka and Drogba could be the key.
