PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said Sabah has several active fault lines that result in occasional earthquakes. MetMalaysia's Earthquake and Tsunami Centre director Dr Wan Azli Wan Hassan said an earthquake can be considered weak if it is below 5 on the Richter scale to moderate if it is between 5 and 5.9 on the Richter scale. Dr Wan Azli pointed out Malaysia is not in the Pacific Ring of Fire where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur. He said this morning's earthquake (5.9 on the Richter scale) was on the borderline of being strong in magnitude. Dr Wan said there were some minor aftershocks after the quake and the department was monitoring the situation.
