Rape victim抯 hollow laughter
She doesn抰 seem to remember anything, all she does is laugh and chatter away
KUCHING: She laughs for no apparent reason and she utters words no one understands. Nancy Belawan has been lost in her own world since that fateful night on Oct 2, 2003 - the night she was raped.
MORE LAUGHS: Nancy laughs while lying on the floor accompanied by her brother who bears the responsibility to look after her while their parents work in the field.
She came to Kuching in search of a new life but she got more then she bargained for the night she accepted an invitation from her friends to go out after work.
Nancy was 17 years old when the nightmare happened.
Her limp body was found naked near a graveyard here by a worker, who immediately sent her to the Sarawak General Hospital here.
She was admitted into the hospital where she lay unconscious.
Seeing that the doctors could not do much to help her, her parents decided to bring her back to their longhouse, Rumah Tengak, some 28 km from Sri Aman.
Fortunately, the Che Chuan Khor Moral Uplifting Society in Sri Aman heard of Nancy抯 plight and offered to help.
After 50 days of treatment by a Chinese physician from Peninsula Malaysia, she regained consciousness but she could not recall what happened to her and neither would she get up from bed.
Nancy was never the same again. She talked in words no one could understand and she laughs happily most of the time.
She is often found alone with her eight-year-old brother in the house while her parents are busy working in the field.
She has a brother working in Pulau Penang, West Malaysia. She also has a younger sister who is now married and has settled down in West Malaysia as well.
Sometimes, when she laughs out of the blue, her brother has to stop her and she would be quiet but not for long. One could never imagine what she had gone through for the past four years.
She is not on any medication for the moment as the family was told that there is no medicine for this sort of situation but to wait for a miracle that will bring their loved one back to them.
They are still praying and waiting for that miracle to happen.
Che Chuan Khor Moral Uplifting Society had decided to help Nancy after taking into account her family抯 financial status and circumstances.
The society抯 secretary, Kapitan Kueh Ik Seng, hopes that the relevant authorities would look into Nancy抯 plight and help to wake her from her limbo.
