well, as i say, i've been visiting a few major art museums recently. And I'd like to share some pics with art lovers here and to start it all, we'll deal with the biggest of them all first...the louvre in paris.
all art lovers should  visit here at least once in your life time and i'm fortunate enough to have visited this museum twice already. i'm sure some of you have too and for those that have yet to visit it, i hope you'll have the opportunity to do so one day soon.

firstl of all i'll post the pics of the buildings. The next post will be about the paintings.

1) probably the easiest way to go to the louvre is by the metro (paris' underground/subway). The stop is 'palais royal' and you'll go directly to the musuem entrance from the exit of this station.

2) from this station it takes about 10 mins to reach the entrance. You can even buy the entry ticket in the shop in the station near the entrance. and what an entrance! it is on an undeground floor with a stunning inverted glass pyramid structure which looks very modern as opposed to the classical style of the louvre building itself.

3: The main entrance is actually via the  above ground glass pyramid . This pyramid as you may already know is designed by the famous american chinese architect i.m pei. the bulding you see here is a part of the louvre. The museum consists of several buildings joined togather. it's huge!

4: you go through the entrance in the pyramid and down the escalator to the underground floor to enter the museum exhibits.

5: on average 3 million visitors come to the louvre every year, if say the museum opens 300 days a year this roughly translates to 10,000 visitors per day! here's the entrance to the museum

6: for really serious art lovers there is even a hotel just beside the louvre...hotel du louvre!

7: and here's the louvre pyramid seen from the inside at dusk. the buildings on each side are part of the louvre

8: and here at night. You can see eiffel tower on the top left of the pic

now i want to share a few pics of some of the more famous paintings that are displayed in the louvre. Of course almost all paintings in the louvre are by artists that are mostly wellknown by people who love western art but i just select a few here. one great thing about the louvre is that they allow people to take pictures as long as you don't use flash. the ONLY pic that is NOT allowed however is the mona lisa. don't know why. but other leonardos are ok.

1: leonado...the room with the monal isa. you can see people crowding in front of the mona lisa at the centre of the pic.

2: leonardo - the virgin of the rocks. here is the second most famous painting by leonardo. it's been in the louvre since early 1500 AD!

3: Jacques-louis David - oath of the horatii
if you see the film 'the da vinci code' you'll notice this pic in the early sequence of the film  where that guy ran away from his assasin...

4: Vermeer -the lace maker. I'm surprised to see that this very well known pic is actually very small (less than 1'X 1') this pic is one of the many that are protected under glass hence you see some reflection on part of her head.

5: fragonard-the bolt. this is one of my favorite western paintings. if you google this painting you may read all kinds of interesting interpretation of this pic. Some even call it downright pornography.

6: Ingress - le grande odalisque
heres's one of the most famous paintings in the louvre by the academy painter ingress.

7: and here is one lovely still life by Rembrandt. I'll post some pics and say something about still life in my next post as this is my favorite genre.

and as i mentioned previously, my favorite genre in western art is the 'still life'. to some people when you say you like 'still life' is just like saying you support millwall instead of manchester united. but in reality all major artists at some stage have painted still life... from classical old masters to impressionists to cubists etc...(more of these in my later posts)

the first time i started looking at still life 'seriously' was about 20 years ago - when i bought a copy of a 17th century dutch flower painting  by jacob van wascapelle . This artist from kelantan  copied it from a benson and hedges calendar.  and from then onward i started reading about the still life paintings and i still have a very huge liking for still life especially those of duth and flemish still life paintings. The two great books with sumptuous color photos of still life that i have and constantly refer to are  (1) Delight for the senses : Dutch and Flemish still-life paintings from Budapest -by Ildiko Ember  (it is an exhibition catalogue) and Still life -by Norbet Schnieder (bouhgt at Page one- which is now in kino i think).
By the way at the moment there is a really great still life book in Borders KL but it cost RM500 so i did not buy this.

here are some of the still life that are in the louvre

1) Flower paintings - by  jan van huysum

2) the laden table monochrome type of still life - here is an example by willem claesz. heda

3) here is another example of a laden table by jan davidz de heem

in my next post i'll talk about my favorite still life painter

ok, now my fav still life painter. He's NOT any of those 17th century dutch/flemish still life painters although i love many of them immensely. My fav is in fact french. He is Jean simeon baptiste chardin. there are some really great french still life painters including fantin la tour and of course the great cezanne (more of that later). But Chardin is very special because he was a bridge between the old masters and the new (impressionist/post imp masters) and his still life looks very modern for his time.
I'm not going to say any more about chardin but you can get all the info if you google his name (chardin).

Here are some pics of his still lifes from the louvre  and why i like them (I'll post some other pics from other museums in later posts)

1) This pic gets me interested in chardin many years ago. I like it so much that I asked one painter to copy it for me. and i didn't know that it is in the louvre until i saw it recently. The composition is so simple and looks very  modern.

2) another simple composition with very beautiful apples

3) one of the most attractive aspects of chardin to me is his warm and sensual colors like this bowl of peach here

4) i know nothing about technical aspects of painting so, i apologize if i sound like i'm talking nonsense, but to me chardin's simple composition which are basically flat and linear /horizontal from left to right, the choice of simple objects , plain dark background and it's very simplicity  is strangely hypnotic . i can stand in front of a chardin painting for minutes on end without getting tired looking at them...

5) here's another one with simple objects

6) but chardin also have more complex compositions. here is an example. a very wellknown stingray  picture

7) The louvre has a room specially for chardin alone.

sometimes back i recall reading a comment from 'gravedigger' to a ms fleurzsa post saying that his wife who is a school teacher teaching art to school children learn a lot from the "art and culture" forum. (i apologize mr gravedigger if i didn't get it right)

this is very good to hear. but one thing i notice though is that we in malaysia seldom see (if any at all) school children being brought to art museums to see and learn about our art collections. Unlike in western countries or even other countries within Asean, I've come across teachers bringing very young school children to see arts in their museums. I've seen this in China, Taiwan, Indonesia , thailand and even cambodia for example. and of course in the US, and Europe, this is a normal thing.

i think one of the main reasons why this is so in malaysia is  because even our teachers DON'T know anything about our art collection!

in europe and elsewhere, teachers bring children to copy certain pictures, or have discussion about specific pictures. About two months ago i saw at least several groups of young pupils (may be 8 -9 yrs old!) in national art gallery,  london with their teachers... one group was in front of a turner painting and even I learn a lot of interesting things the teacher was explaining to these young children. Another group was in front of a fantin la tour still life etc....

here are a few picture i took  several months back of children excursion to see and learn about  pictures and sculptures in muse d'orsay paris

1) teacher explaining manet's paintings. notice that here they allow people to take pictures as long as people don't use flash. unfortunately our museums in malaysia and even London NAG (national art gallery ) still don't allow this.

2) in van gogh's room - wonder what they were discussing about.

3) here - talking about this bear sculpture... they don't worry too much about the nude sculptures behind them

4) for the benefit of those who still haven't visited paris, here's a pic of the muse d'orsay building -the premier repository of impressionist paintings of france. i'll post some examples of these in my alter post

6) and notice the long queue to enter the museum. and entry is not free at that! most of these people are visitors to paris...i see many young japanese and chinese visitors...majority of them are girls!

Hmmm...no wonder i feel like choking 'cause my name mentioned here. Yes mr.Greenbottle, my wife's a primary school teacher and one of her subject that she taught was art. She used to refer to me whenever she had idea no more to teach art and so this is the forum that I recomended her looking ideas for planning her lessons. At the moment she's doing part-time study at OUM and now busy with the subject 'Seni Dalam Pendidikan'. I'm her victim doing her assignment, hehehe. She's beginning to find interest's in art now.
I like reading your posting's 'cause I'm an art lover too even though i'm trained in Industrial design. Wish someday I do have adventures like yours visiting art galleries all over the world.
Cheerio.

november is here;

can i get my dragon fruit Ms Fleu?

i bought this painting from Beijing several weeks back. very2 cheap for i think it is just a student copy. I don't know the painter but it looks very much like a yang feiyun nude. it could be a copy of his painting. Yang Feiyun is a fairly wellknown Chinese nude painter now and his paintings are in several hundred thousand ringgit now.
