Badzine will calculate and publish a list of top earners in the badminton circuit, every three months, to give an idea of who is getting what from the events they compete in. This list only takes in account the “prize money” for top players, which is a public figure, and does not include any sponsorship agreements nor salaries paid by their clubs or federation. These figures are also the ones given on the “prize money” charts from the events, which do not include any taxes that were withdrawn by local authorities.
Our first list is the final list of the year of 2011 where we have highlighted the players individually rather than pairs.
Logically, as the world’s number one, Lee Chong Wei also tops the list of earners for 2011 with a global income of US$267,350. He has earned almost 5 times more money as Chen Jin, the 5th best earner of 2011. Lee Yong Dae is the top earner for the doubles category with US$142,635. In the women’s events, Wang Yihan tops the list with a total of US$265,575, not too far in front of doubles and mixed specialist Zhao Yunlei with USD 235,128.
All together, only 14 shuttlers have earned more than US$100,000 in prize money in 2011. The top Europeans are the duo of Boe/Mogensen, who each have earned US$101,299. Peter Gade, the top European in men’s singles, earned US$88,500 for his great season.

General NewsLee Chong Wei and Wang Xiaoli/Yu Yang named 2011 BWF Players of the Year
Monday, December 12, 2011 - Badminton World Federation | Badminton Photo
World number 1 men's singles player Lee Chong Wei and world number 1 women's doubles pair of Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang have been awarded the 2011 BWF male and female Players of the Year respectively.
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) president, Dr Kang Young Joong, presented the 2011 BWF Players of the Year awards to Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei and China's Wang Xiaoli/Yu Yang at the opening dinner of the 2011 Li Ning BWF World Superseries Finals in Liuzhou.
This is the third consecutive year that the Malaysian has been awarded the prestigious title, while it's the first time in the history of the award that a doubles pair was awarded the BWF Player of the Year.
Lee Chong Wei (pictured right) may have lost the 2011 World title to his arch nemesis Lin Dan at the 2011 Yonex World Championships in London, but that did not overshadow his outstanding accomplishments throughout the year.
The 29-year-old had picked up 5 OSIM BWF World Superseries titles in the 2011 regular season, and will be remembered for making 11 consecutive finals appearances in 2011.
On a 24-hour online fan poll conducted last week, Chong Wei had also edged Lin Dan as the 2011 fan favourite male player with many acknowledging Chong Wei's remarkable consistency, on-court temperament and persistence had won them over.
The 2011 BWF Female Players of the Year award saw a clear winner in Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang (pictured left), who have become the first shuttlers to scoop a 'grand slam' with their 5 OSIM BWF World Superseries Premier titles in 2011.
Having only teamed up for slightly over a year, Wang/Yu have already picked up the 2011 World title and were also champions at the 2011 Asian Championships. The duo made 12 consecutive finals appearances with 7 BWF World Superseries titles to their name in 2011.
Wang/Yu have also taken the women's doubles game to a new level with their aggressive and speedy style of play. Not only has this set them apart from the rest of their peers, their success has been recogised as an instrumental force in revolutionising the women's doubles game. Beyond their accolades, they are both active ambassadors of the sport.
The popular Chinese pair was runners-up in the fan favourite poll in which Indonesia's Liliyana Natsir, backed by a vociferous Indonesian online crowd, had taken pole.
IT started with a brilliant run by Lee Chong Wei, who single-handedly kept Malaysia's fortunes afloat for most of 2011, but a late collapse by the World No 1 has raised questions on his capability to secure the nation's first Olympic gold in London 2012.
BAM has hired former South Korean international Yoo Yong Sung (left) to help revitalise Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong’s game in order to keep their Olympic dreams alive.
Lee Chong Wei and his coach Tey Seu Bock have indicated they are willing to accept help.
By all means, Chong Wei enjoyed a spectacular 2011, reaching 10 straight international finals and 11 in all.
He won seven of the 11 finals, a feat only bettered by China's women's doubles Wang Xiaoli-Yu Yang, who won 10 out of 12 finals.
However, a late rally by nemesis Lin Dan saw the China ace winning seven titles, including a fourth world crown at Chong Wei's expense, and the Olympic champion's form is a major cause for concern.
Lin Dan beat Chong Wei four times in five meetings this year and the latter's troubles were further compounded by three defeats to rising star Chen Long.
A hectic schedule was probably the reason why Chong Wei's form deteriorated in the last two months but the major worry is his performance against the China duo, which needs to be urgently addressed.
The BA of Malaysia (BAM), despite being among the best funded associations in the country, knows that it is only Chong Wei who can deliver gold in the Olympics and it has seven months to help him get back to where he was at the beginning of 2011.
The Olympic qualifying period demands that players compete in at least six tournaments until the end of April, which Chong Wei has to do in order to remain in the top two of the May 3 world rankings which will decide the seeding.
The seeding is crucial for Chong Wei as he must avoid playing Lin Dan until the Olympic final and then go for broke.
Chong Wei and his coach Tey Seu Bock have indicated they are willing to accept help and BAM, even if decides that Misbun Sidek's services are not required, has to ensure it can deliver.
For one, BAM has to help Chong Wei prioritise and if need be, the shuttler should be exempted from the Thomas Cup qualifiers in February and final rounds in Wuhan, China in May.
While Chong Wei, despite his recent troubles, is not that far off track, doubles Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong have hogged the limelight for the wrong reasons despite BAM's efforts to help them.
This included bringing in former South Korean international Yoo Yong Sung as a coach but Kien Keat-Boon Heong, despite their experience and natural talent, only won the Malaysia Open grand prix title in 2011 and time is running out for them to battle for gold, let alone a medal, in the Olympics.
South Korean rivals Jung Jae Sung-Lee Yong Dae and Ko Sung Hyun-Yoo Yeon Seong, and China's four-time world champions Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng are in a class of their own while Denmark's Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen and Olympic champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia have regularly beaten Kien Keat-Boon Heong.
Currently, Kien Keat-Boon Heong are out of the equation when it comes to Olympic medals and unless they change their attitude and sincerely work hard, they will be in London just to make up the numbers.
BAM has to take stock of this for despite a well established national training programme, it is sad to see only Chong Wei being the flagbearer.
Maybank's sponsorship tie-up this year has given BAM the funding needed to work on the next generation of players but the association seems to be slow in making positive moves.
BAM now has about RM6 million to work with annually and sending the back-up and seniors just for tournaments is not going to work.
The shuttlers must be targeted to produce results and climb up the rankings fast. Their coaches must also be given the opportunity to see their players in action.
Both players and coaches who don't deliver must be shown the exit for it is better to blood a younger group of players between 18 and 20 years of age rather than depending on those who have been in the squad for more than five years.
Allocating RM1.6 million for development and getting each state a head coach is a good move but BAM must also monitor how the programmes are implemented if there is to be success.
If not, even if Chong Wei wins gold in London, it will be a long wait before Malaysia tastes Olympic glory again.
KEMAMAN - Menteri Belia dan Sukan, Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek meminta Persatuan Badminton Malaysia (BAM) dan Datuk Misbun Sidek mencari satu formula untuk mengubat 'kerinduan' pemain badminton negara Datuk Lee Chong Wei terhadap bekas jurulatihnya itu.
Beliau berkata, kedua-dua pihak perlu mengetepikan soal menjaga air muka masing-masing, sebaliknya meletakkan kepentingan negara sebagai keutamaan demi masa depan badminton negara.
"Kedua-dua perlu mencari formula, jangan terlalu fikir soal air muka masing-masing kerana kepentingan negara lebih penting. Ini bukan soal nak jaga air muka sesiapa kerana tiada air muka sesiapa pun yang terjejas.
"Sekarang Misbun takut air muka beliau terjejas kalau kembali, BAM pula takut dikatakan menjilat ludahnya kembali.
- Bernama

Chong Wei and Lin Dan share unique friendship off the court By RAJES PAUL
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei and Lin Dan of China are deadly rivals on the badminton court. But all those years of trying to outdo each other has seen them develop a special bond born of mutual respect.
This great rivalry and unique friendship, on and off the court, is good for the sport, says Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) vice president David Wee.
David, who was the Malaysian team manager for the final leg of the Super Series Tour in Shanghai last week, had the privilege to witness the close relationship behind the rivalry between the world’s two greatest players.
Healthy rivalry: Lin Dan sharing a light moment with Lee Chong Wei in the dressing room after their China Open semi-final match last week.
He was quite surprised with Lin Dan’s ‘gentle’ side – especially after the four-time world champion’s 19-21, 21-12, 21-11 win over Chong Wei in the semi-final of the China Open in a match that lasted one hour and 15 minutes.
After the match, Lin Dan, known for his arrogant demeanour on court, sportingly gave his Malaysian archrival a pat on the back for giving him a tough time.
“After the rub down, Lin Dan paid Chong Wei a visit in the changing room. He shook Chong Wei’s hand for the rousing battle and they exchanged pleasantries,” said David.
“Lin Dan even brought a few T-shirts for Chong Wei to sign. His wife (Xie Xingfang) and some friends were with him and they were happily snapping pictures. It’s nice to note that there is such camaraderie between two great rivals. I guess this is the beauty of sports.”
David said that the friendship was acknowledgement of the mutual respect the two players had for each other.
“Over the years, Chong Wei has narrowed the gap on Lin Dan and the Chinese player knows it. In fact, in the China Open, Lin Dan had to work hard for every point although the scoreline in the second and rubber games may indicate otherwise.
“Chong Wei was in excellent form, sending shots deep into the corner of the court but Lin Dan was able to retrieve them all. Only a thin line separates the duo and it is good to note that they bring out the best in each other. This is good for the game.
“Lin Dan’s recent exploits show that he has improved on his fitness.
“Chong Wei will now have to counter it by working harder on his own fitness and game. This certainly makes the clashes between these two players something to look forward to.
“I will be submitting my report on Chong Wei to the council on Dec 17.
“Chong Wei has reached the final of every tournament he has played in this year except for the last two Opens in Hong Kong and China, where he lost in the semi-finals to Lin Dan. It is still an exceptional performance. I cannot think of anyone who has been that consistent in a sport that is physically so demanding.”
Prior to the China Open, Lin Dan had also beaten Chong Wei in the Hong Kong Open semi-finals and the finals of the South Korea Open and World Championships. Chong Wei, however, showed that the Chinese superstar was not altogether invincible when he beat his nemesis in defending the All-England title in March.
The duo are expected to meet for one last time this year during the Super Series Masters Finals in Liuzhou from Dec 14-18. Fans can expect another clash of the titans in a fitting climax to the season.
Pang turns to simulation training to revive Koo-Tan’s spirit
PETALING JAYA: National badminton men’s doubles coach Pang Cheh Chang is utilising tournament simulation training for top pair Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong to revive their fighting spirit and flagging fortunes.
Kien Keat-Boon Heong have had a poor year, winning only one tournament – the Malaysian Open GP Gold in May, and tumbled to No. 6 in the world rankings.
They have also found their main rivals, such as China’s Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng and South Korea’s Jung Jae-sung-Lee Yong-dae and Ko Sung-hyun-Yoo Yeon-seong, impossible to overcome.
They did show some fight in stretching Jae-sung-Yong-dae to a nail-biting three games in the World Super Series Finals recently, but they also did not do their already battered morale much good by losing all their group matches.
Cheh Chang believes that the duo need to show spirit and determination in training if they are to get out of their current rut.
“I have had ideas and feedback from coaches, as well as both Kien Keat and Boon Heong, and decided to introduce tournament simulation in training to bring out the best in them,” said Cheh Chang.
“It has proved promising as they are showing some of the old hunger and drive.
“They need more motivation, ambition and determination in actual competition.
“The only thing we’re currently lacking is quality sparring partners because Goh V Shen-Lim Khim Wah are the only ones who are able to put them under real pressure.
“We also lack training time due to the hectic competition schedule but I believe that towards the end of April, there will be a good few weeks for intense focused training,” added Cheh Chang. Kien Keat-Boon Heong received a major boost in the Korean Open in Seoul next week when world No. 2 Jae-sung-Yong-dae withdrew from the competition.
The fifth seeded Kien Keat-Boon Heong, who play Dutch duo Ruud Bosch-Koen Ridder in the first round, were drawn to meet the Koreans in the quarter-finals. Nevertheless, Cheh Chang has warned them not to get complacent and focus on the tournament one match at a time.
“It may be considered lucky, but any pair can cause an upset on a good day and I want them to stay focused on the task at hand regardless of the opposition,” said Cheh Chang.
