Oda Yuji will be starring in the movie, "Kenchou no Hoshi" (Star of the Prefectural Government) since his last hit, "Odoru Daisoussasen THE MOVIE2" shown in 2003 which made 17.35 billion yen. This new movie will be shown on 25 Feb 2006 and also stars Shibasaki Kou.

The story is based on a novel written by Katsuragi Nozomi published in Sep this year which talks about an elite civil servant from the prefectural government who has to work at a supermarket for research on a project he's going to implement. Through that stint, he feels the gap between the country and the ordinary people and discovers important things that he has never realised before.

Contrary to his past roles which are usually good people, this civil servant Oda plays will be someone who only cares about results and promotions who knows nothing about how to care for people. He received the offer to act in this movie in summer 04 where he only got the outline and accepted it immediately. The filming will begin in the middle of this month.

Shibasaki Kou plays a supermarket employee who is to be Oda's partner during his brief stint there and the two get into constant clashes as Shibasaki is younger and Oda has to listen to her lectures. In the novel however, Shibasaki's role is supposed to be older than the lead character i.e. a lady in her 40s but the director decided to change the setting so as to make the plot more interesting.

The story can be broken up into two sections i.e. the first being Ofuku/Kasuga (Yuki Matsu$hita) vs Oeyo (Reiko Takashima) and the second being Ofuku/Kasuga vs Oman (Asaka Seto) who was to become one of Iemitsu/Takechiyo's favourite concubine.

What I found very interesting about this drama was the fact that the plot was very intriguing and engaging even for a period drama like this. I must admit that I don't know much about Japanese history except for a few famous historical figures like Miyamoto Musashi, Oda Nobunaga whom have been played countless times on TV. However, even though the story touches more on the struggles of women surviving in Ooku and the fights between them, it's done in a very tasteful manner. Besides, the cast have done pretty well and their costumes are really elaborate with beautiful sceneries as the setting. Thus, I would definitely recommend this as a much watch even though I have never been a fan of Japanese period dramas. This has definitely changed my impression of this genre and I look forward to the sequel since the story is definitely unfinished with Iemitsu having 3 sons and 4 concubines.
