Arsène Wenger to rest key Arsenal players for FA Cup tie at West Ham
Arsène Wenger's conviction that Arsenal can win the Premier League title will be reflected in his selection for Sunday's FA Cup third-round tie at West Ham United. The Frenchman will make the need to take six points from next week's league games at the Emirates his priority.
Arsenal will leapfrog Manchester United and move within a point of Chelsea if they beat Bolton on Wednesday and they could top the division if they beat Everton four days later. Arsenal have won five of six league games since the 3-0 home loss to Chelsea in November that left them 11 points adrift, form that suggests the Gunners could win the title for the first time since 2004.
"I will have to rest some players," said the Arsenal manager, whose last trophy came in this competition in 2005, when Manchester United were beaten in the final. "We want to win but we want to protect [players] for our home games against Bolton and Everton as well. That Bolton game becomes very important for us. We want to keep our momentum going, so I will change some players. That is sure.
"The Premier League is always more important but, in the eyes of the fans, we are looking for trophies. However, the Premier League is so hard that you want to take care of your position. Two years ago we had a very good chance [to win the title] and we were not far away. At the moment we have to maintain our spirit and our attitude, and then we will have a chance."
Cesc Fábregas, Denílson and Theo Walcott will be missing at Upton Park thanks to hamstring, back and rib injuries. Wenger will not field an entirely youthful side, but he will be tempted to rest Manuel Almunia, Samir Nasri, Andrey Arshavin, Thomas Vermaelen and William Gallas. Alex Song will play his final match before going to the African Cup of Nations. The midfielder may return to find Wenger has strengthened his squad, though a move for the forward Marouane Chamakh will not happen this month.
"Chamakh is in the Champions League with Bordeaux and at the top of their league so he will not move now," Wenger said. "He has four months to go on his contract and they have no interest in selling him. But I will move [in the transfer window] as early as I can. For now, I am like I was when I was a student and I had to study for an exam. I will wait a while."
West Ham's thoughts are on their struggle against relegation. Gianfranco Zola, who may pick Freddie Sears in the absence of the suspended Guillermo Franco, said: "We will have a go. Maybe the FA Cup is not a priority, but we will be up for it. We'll have the possibility to play some different players, but I will take it seriously. We want to honour the competition." |

Arsene Wenger Rules Out Arsenal Move For Milan Striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that the Gunners will not be making a move to sign AC Milan striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar.
With Robin van Persie effectively ruled out for the rest of the season, the north Londoners have been linked with a whole host of forwards including Huntelaar, Edin Dzeko, Marouane Chamakh and Craig Bellamy.
Despite being the Premier League’s top scorers and Wenger’s self-confessed dislike of the January transfer window, Arsenal are still expected to do business this month although one player not on the Frenchman's wanted list is Huntelaar.
"I am surprised he never plays but he is not on our radar," the Arsenal boss told the club’s official website.
"I don't believe this kind of player can move. I am not sure he can move again in this transfer period because he has already moved once this season." |

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed he will make use fo his impressive youngsters and fringe players against West Ham.
"Yes I will rotate," said Wenger. "We had a few players who played onthe edge the other night (against Portsmouth) and I will try not totake too big a risk for some players who are medically vulnerable atthe moment, and protect one or two more. But we will have just asstrong a side as we had at Portsmouth.
Gunners skipper Cesc Fabregas is out with a hamstring problem andDenilson (back), Theo Walcott (side strain) Nicklas Bendtner (groin),Gael Clichy (back), Kieran Gibbs (foot), Robin van Persie (ankle) andJohan Djourou (knee) are all out.
Winger Tomas Rosicky, veteran defender Mikael Silvestre and reservegoalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski may be given starts.
Midfielder Alex Song will feature in the match before joining theAfrican Nations Cup, but Emmanuel Eboue is already on duty with theIvory Coast.

ARSENAL
Fabiansksi - 7 - Several fine saves helped keep the Gunners afloat and he did his claims for a regular spot in the team no harm at all.
Sagna - 6 - Tried to provide width and a supply of crosses from the right flank when he overlapped but did not see as much of the ball as he would have liked and did well defensively.
Gallas - 7 - Strong and imposing for the Gunners for most of the evening, but again was occasionally exposed by sharp movements around him.
Vermaelen - 6 - Lucky to escape with a possible handball in the first half, he looked less steady and comfortable than in recent weeks.
Silvestre - 6 - His error in stepping up to claim offside was a mistake that led to the opening Hammers goal. Was unable to do much to redeem the error.
Merida - 6 - Did many good things with the ball, but also made mistakes with too many touches and struggled to integrate smoothly into the attacking machine. Withdrawn after an hour.
Song - 8 - Worked very hard to hold the team together in midfield where Arsenal's lack of experience was exposed, and collected a yellow card for his troubles.
Ramsey - 7 - Did his best, but this was not an afternoon to enjoy for the Welsh youngster as he found himself lacking space to play and struggling to impose himself before taking control and scoring a fine equaliser in the second half.
Wilshere - 6 - A tough game for the teenager as the Hammers gave him little room or time on the ball, but he worked hard and his touch and movement were generally good. Hooked after an hour.
Vela - 6 - Had one first half shot well saved by Green, but did little else to justify much faith in his potential to claim the center forward's job until, after moving to the left flank, his late cross created the winner for Eduardo.
Eduardo - 7 - A better than usual display from the Croatian who had a first half shot well saved and was generally busy and threatening before he leapt to head the winner from Vela's cross.
Subs:
Diaby - 7 - Came on as a second half replacement and immediately injected strength and quality to the Arsenal midfield.
Nasri - 6 - Produced quality touches as a second half sub to prove nothing replaces skill. |
