JUZZ BLONG! BLONG!
Group A:
Barcelona
Chelsea
Werder Bremen
Levski Sofia
The score between Barca and Chelsea is even after both clubs knocked each other out of the competition in the last two seasons. The La Liga title-holders have the edge over their English counterparts and only an extended internal strife between coach Frank Rijkaard and star player Ronaldinho would shed uncertainties over their focus. An attack-minded Bremen were two minutes away from knocking Juventus out of the last 16 in February and would pose the biggest threat to Barca and Chelsea. Levski Sofia is Bulgaria's first representative to progress to the group stages and last term's UEFA Cup quarterfinalists would rely on team unity and grit to impress.
Group B:
Inter Milan
Bayern Munich
Sporting Lisbon
Spartak Moscow
Italy's stand-in champions Inter Milan could not have wished for a tougher draw but should not have major problems in finishing behind Bayern. Roberto Mancini faces a make-or-break season after heavy investment on players and a favourable performance in Europe would help prolong his San Siro stay. Felix Magath continues to defy his critics at home and is gradually building a side to recapture the European Cup won five seasons ago. The only hurdle for him is the lack of strength in depth in defence and midfield. Sporting Lisbon and Spartak Moscow face an uphill task on their return to the group phase to upset the formbook.
Group C:
Liverpool
PSV Eindhoven
Bordeaux
Galatasaray
There are no leading contenders in this group ? only a huge dose of d?? vu. When Rafael Benitez refused the tag of favourites, the Liverpool boss raised the Benfica upset last season as evidence ? and omitted to mention that their ex-coach Ronald Koeman now helms PSV. Koeman is aiming to repeat the Eagles' heroics that were ended by Barcelona in the last eight. Galatasaray coach Eric Gerets would relish a trip back to Eindhoven, where he was part of their only European Cup-winning side, which included Koeman. Both would also remember that their PSV of 1988 defeated Bordeaux on their way to glory 18 years ago.
Group D
Valencia
AS Roma
Olympiacos
Shakhtar Donetsk
The qualification hopes are equally matched in the only group without former European Cup holders. Valencia (2000 and 2001) and Roma (1984) have made it to the final before. Both are being rebuilt under relatively new managers. Quique Sanchez Flores' Valencia have been tipped to surprise La Liga while Roma coach Luciano Spalletti, like Flores, will be making his Champions League debut. The experience of Olympiacos and their sturdy home record would threaten Valencia and Roma but the Greek title-holder's failure to reach the last 16 in the last seven seasons would count against them. The Ukraine league has started and the extra games would be handy for champions Shakhtar.
Group E:
Real Madrid
Lyon
Steaua Bucharest
Dynamo Kiev
The tactical battles between Fabio Capello and Gerrard Houllier would set the tone for the group, while Steaua and Dynamo would not be contented to be bystanders to the main contest. Houllier collected a win and a draw against Madrid last term and as the Liverpool manager beat ex-AS Roma boss Capello three seasons ago, also at group stage. The challenge for the Frenchman is to take Lyon beyond the last eight that they managed in March. Steaua and Dynamo are confident that they can rock the chances of the top duo. Both have hopes that Madrid and Lyon cancel each other out in the group opener on Sept 13.
Group F:
Manchester United
Celtic
Benfica
FC Copenhagen
Three former champions and the sole novice would be the story of this group. While United, Celtic and Benfica would fancy their chances against Copenhagen, they would be mindful that the Danish champions embarrassed Ajax Amsterdam in the qualifiers. Alex Ferguson's side are everyone's tip for the top spot even tough Benfica, which beat United to move out of their group early this year, would dispute this popular belief. Gordon Strachan would throw in his doubts into this claim as well and the all-British clashes between Celtic and United would bring together two tough Scots with no love lost between them. The Celtic-United showdowns might just work in favour of Benfica.
Group G:
Arsenal
FC Porto
CSKA Moscow
SV Hamburg Last campaign's finalists Arsenal will be boosted by summer reinforcements and the move to a bigger ground to take that one step up to join Europe's elite. Arsene Wenger surpassed his previous record of reaching the semi-finals with AS Monaco by guiding the Gunners into the Final in May and has landed himself a favourable draw. Porto were upstaged in Europe by Benfica and would dread another repeat as they mount another recovery from the break-up of the team that won the European Cup in 2004. CSKA, the first Russian club to win the UEFA Cup, would supply a darker threat than Hamburg to Arsenal's aspirations following their recent surge.
Group H:
AC Milan
Lille
AEK Athens
Anderlecht
AC Milan is the overwhelming choice to march into the semifinals and were relieved that the match-fixing scandal that almost cost them a place in Europe. Further bliss came their way when three of from the lightweight pot ended up in their group and, as one-sided affairs go, it cannot get any more pleasurable than this company. Anderlecht and Lille have made it from last season's group phase cast and while they would muster challenges to the Rossonerri 's all-star team, it is unlikely that they would dampen Milan's expectations of an easy passage. AEK would want to limit Milan's visit to Athens to just one but that would be wishful thinking. |
