Which anticipated film failed to meet your expectations this year?

With promotions getting more rigorous, collections getting bigger, fees' hiking up and releases going greater worldwide, there are bound to be a few films that just sink without a trace, because they lack in content or entertainment value, what they offer in mindless stunts and big names.

This year too, we've had our fair share of highly-anticipated duds at the box office. But which one hit you the most? Check it out.

1. Players - This multi-starrer was your typical criminal heist film with high production value, mind-pumping actions, stunts and chases and the works. Abbas-Mustan may have a fair share of Bollycats in their bag, but their thrillers are always slick and entertaining. And with names like Abhishek Bachchan, Bipasha Basu, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Sonam Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Sikander Kher and Omi Vaidya in the cast-list, we were promised a star-studded extravaganza. The film was the first official theatrical release of the year, and unlike any of their previous films, the filmmakers had purchased the rights to remake the super Hollywood blockbuster, The Italian Job. Furthermore, thanks to all the hype that it had to live up to, Players was made on a crazy budget. But on release, it only received criticism from audiences and reviewers alike. The film reinstated the belief that the first release of the year is always a failure. But was that the only reason?

2. Agent Vinod - India gets its very own James Bond. That's what we were told. So when Chhote Nawab went all out to promote his home production in which he starred as a RAW agent. Real life partner Kareena joined him in the super stylish film which due to its content, promised similar entertainment to any James Bond flick. The film was shot practically all over the world, the songs were topping charts, and some typical gimmicks were employed to promote the film. Saif and Kareena kept themselves in the news thanks to a few controversies just around release. And there were issues of plagiarism hovering the film. But nothing could save this sinking ship. It was banned in Pakistan due to sensitive content, and even though it garnered safe reviews, it tanked and was declared a flop.

3. Dangerous Ishqq - This film was probably anticipated purely for one reason - Karishma Kapoor. The actress who took a six year long break from Bollywood post marriage was finally back on screen. It was a woman-oriented film. She played the lead and the film was definitely a one-woman show. Where the film faltered was its flawed promotional strategy, and its weak script. Undeniably, it was a colossal flop.

4. Shanghai - Shanghai is a political thriller directed by Dibakar Banerjee, who has made four features and two of them - Khosla Ka Ghosla and Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! have won him National Awards. So when he gets down to business, everyone stops to watch. Unfortunately, Shanghai was jinxed from the get-go. It was embroiled in controversy involving a song 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' before release which affected its release considerably. And even though the film gathered mostly positive reviews, and even did good business in certain markets, the film did not make as much money as expected. It was a below average grosser which was a disappointment because it even had a stellar cast including Abhay Deol, Emraan Hashmi, Kalki Koechlin, Supriya Pathak, Prosenjit Chatterjee and Farooq Sheikh.

5. Teri Meri Kahani - Well, it was a time when even the smallest move made by PeeCee and Shahid was splashed across tabloids. Were they or were they not dating? No one was committing. But the superhit jodi of Kaminey was back to entertain in a Kunal Kohli romance. The film would explore the different love stories of the same two people across three different time periods. Unfortunately critics termed it as banal and saw no redeeming factor in the film. Furthermore, it hit theatres on the same day as the first installment of Anurag Kashyap's highly acclaimed Gangs of Wasseypur, which inturn emerged as a surprise winner at the box office. Nothing could save the film, not even the so-called real life chemistry between the leads.

6. Shirin Farhad Ki To Nikal Padi - When you have Sanjay Leela Bhansali part of the writing credits and Boman Irani as lead cast, it's bound to be a dream debut. Let's throw in Bollywood's no.1 choreographer and successful director as your heroine, and a prolific production house backing you up, it's a definite recipe for success. Well, at least that's what you's hope. Bhansali's sister Bela Sehgal directorial debut was to be as hatke as they came. It explored the love story of lingerie salesman Farhad with Shirin, with the message that age knows no bounds when it comes to romance. While the reviews didn't suggest such, the film lost out on business being released in the second week of blockbuster Ek tha Tiger. The film turned out to be merely watchable however.

7. Heroine - Chandni Bar - National Award. Page 3 - National Award. Traffic Signal - National Award. Fashion - National Award for its cast. *phew* That's a heavy filmography. Heroine was first launched with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the lead. Everything was set, and production began. And then Ash dropped the bomb, and the film was offered again to Kareena Kapoor, who had earlier cited date issues. And then a murder controversy took over. The film had every ingredient that a successful Madhur Bhandarkar film would have. Theatrics, intrigue, melodrama and the downward spiral of sex, drugs and alcohol. But this tried and tested formula didn't work for the audience this time. The film received extreme reviews - very positive or very negative. But the numbers suggested only the latter.

8. Aiyyaa - Whenever Rani makes a so-called comeback, and she is does it quite often, shutterbugs go into a tizzy. Aiyyaa is a different and a difficult film. It has Rani Mukerji playing the main lead and perhaps the only reason why anyone would go to the theatres. She's a star performer, no doubt. And her charisma has made many mediocre films more than watchable in the past. Aiyyaa saw Rani in a completely different avatar. She was the Marathi mulgi who was indulging in high-end dream sequences with her crush. A heightened sense of smell, an absolutely wacky family and delectable eye candy in the form of Southern star Prithviraj. of course this film was anticipated. Amit Trivedi's music was a mix of different Indian flavours with aesthetically and artistically beautiful choreography by Vaibhavi Merchant. However, the direction and screenplay of the film was heavily criticised, especially its runtime which felt much longer than it was. Unfortunately, the film didn't do much for Rani's box office success and was merely lower than average.

Inspite of the big names and big budgets of these films, they failed to deliver. Which was your best and worst?

Shah Rukh Khan drops the idea of making a movie based on Mahabharata

Last year, we heard that King Khan Shah Rukh had expressed his interest in making a film based on the epic story Mahabharata, where he would don the role of Karna, one of the greatest warriors of his time.
Shah Rukh has previously played the role of Emperor Ashok of the Maurya dynasty in his home production back in 2001. The film saw him star opposite Kareena Kapoor, but it failed to make a mark at the box office.

However, once Shah Rukh learned that a similar concept was being worked upon by filmmaker Rajukumar Santoshi, and his next film is based on the same scripture, Shah Rukh quickly dropped the idea.
A source close to SRK told NDTV, "When SRK's ambitious project RA.One was getting ready for release, he was keen to make another science fiction film and had informed his team to work on the lines of Mahabharata. SRK has always been attracted to the subject. However, nothing was finalised. The entire team was working on the show, however now SRK has dropped the plan."

Shah Rukh himself confirmed this news, " "I wanted to make a modern-day Mahabharata, but I was on a flight and read that Rajji (Rajkumar Santoshi) is also making it. So I dropped the idea. Also, a costume drama takes a lot of time and you need to have a certain look and you have to get into character for a year. As of now I am making my next home production and will also work on Farah's film. I remember when I was doing Chak De! India, I had delayed the film for a year. I told Adi (Aditya Chopra) that I needed to have a particular look so we would do it later. In fact, we had to let go of the girls who had initially been signed to be part of the cast. I guess I will do another costume drama sometime later in my career."

Here's hoping that Shah Rukh can bring this dream project to life soon.

Best Hindi Film of 2012 ?

2012 has been an awesome-wawsome year for the movies. While there have been a bunch of blockbusters, not all these money-making machines were strong in terms of content. Here are the films that were not only truly fabulous scripts but also boasted of beautiful stories and spectacular performances. They triumphed everywhere and even made India proud at the international film festivals. And the fact that besides tremendous critical acclaim, these films also set the box-office on fire proves that content was truly the star in 2012.

Here is the best of Bollywood that defined 2012. These modern-day classics will be remembered for many decades to come as they have raised the benchmark for both our actors and film-makers.

1. English Vinglish

2. Barfii

3. Kahaani

4. OMG! Oh My God

5. Vicky Donor

6. Gangs of Wasseypur I & II

7. Paan Singh Tomar

adakah kajol akan dijemput kali neh??
Rani all set to tie the knot??!!

Looks like B-towners can't rest just yet. After Vidya Balan's nuptials in December, the latest report doing the rounds is that Rani Mukerji will also make in official early next year. And if its diva Rani wedding her perhaps long-time beau Yashraj mogul Aditya Chopra, it's sure to be the wedding of the year!

Although we've been hearing of these rumours doing the rounds for some time, an industry insider made it clear to a few newspapers that apparently Rani has been rejecting a number of film scripts as she has an important event to attend in January and wants to save enough time for it. *wink wink nudge nudge*

Another source said that Rani's friends have confirmed that she may have marriage on the cards.
However, Rani's spokesperson denies these rumours, "Rani chooses her films with great amount of care. Her decision to do a film completely depends on the project and the role she has been offered. There is absolutely no truth to her marriage news."

And with Yash Chopra's recent demise, representatives of the studio claim that no celebration is in the offing.

Well, we hope that Rani settles down soon. At least we'll know the truth behind all the rumours!
