AKB48 takes “Japan Record Award” for second consecutive year

On December 30th, the annual music awards show, ”The 54th Kagayaku! Japan Record Awards” was held, and announced that AKB48’s “Manatsu no Sounds good!” (written by Akimoto Yasushi, composed and arranged by Inoue Yoshimasa) has received the grand prize “Japan Record Award.” This is the second consecutive year for AKB48 to receive the award since they won the award with “Flying Get” last year.

Winning the “Japan Record Award” successively has been achieved by Hosokawa Takashi (1982 ~ 1983), Nakamori Akina (1985 ~ 1986), Amuro Namie (1996 ~ 1997), Hamasaki Ayumi (2001 ~ 2003), and EXILE (2008 ~ 2010), thus AKB48 is the first female group to accomplish it.

The general manager of AKB48 groups, Takahashi Minami shed tears, and said, “I am truly happy. Last year, we were desperate to grab the award, but his year, we felt like we must win it as the second chapter for AKB48 has begun. I am proud that we were able to get this award when there are so many great artists here.”

Watanabe Mayu also commented, “As Maeda-san graduated, we, the ones who are left, need to make AKB….”, she then had to stop right there, as she could not hold herself, but cry. She continued tearfully, “I am very happy. While being proud of this, I would like to continue trying our best. Though we felt some pressure, receiving the award will make us gain confidence, and I hope it will bring another good accomplishment.”

Golden Bomber’s new single tops the Oricon weekly chart for the first time

“Visual-kei air band” Golden Bomber’s new single “Dance My Generation” (released on January 1st) sold 125,000 copies in the first week, and topped Oricon’s weekly single chart for the week of January 14th. Since their debut back in May of 2008, this marks the first time for them to top the chart whether it be that of the singles or album charts.

It was also the first time in 9 years and a month for an indie artist, who does not belong to a major label, to top the weekly single ranking since Mongol800 last achieved it with “Yorokobi no Uta” (released in December 2003). Since Mongol800 topped the chart in the second week of the release, Golden Bomber is the first indie artist to top the chart in the first week.

Additionally, 11 of Golden Bomber’s previous works including “DT Suteru/Let’s Go ED” (released in November 2012 under the name of “Golden Ixion Bomber” for the TV anime “Ixion Saga DT“) ranked in TOP100 of the weekly single chart which was the best record for an indie artist. Moreover, the rank for one of the 11 works, “Memeshikute” (released in October 2009), rose to No.4 from No.31, which is the highest rank for the particular single since the its release.

Up until now, Golden Bomber’s highest ranked single was “Yowasete Mojito” (released in November 2011) as it achieved No. 3, and highest ranked album was “Golden Album” (released in January 2012) as it ranked No. 2.

“Dance My Generation” is also their first work to sell over 100,000 copies in the first week. The “Vo-karu (vocal)” Kiryuin Sho, who writes and composes all their songs, commented, “This would not have been possible without everybody! Thank you!”

Vocalist K from Pay money To my Pain passes away

On January 10th, it was belatedly announced that 4-member rock band Pay money To my Pain’s vocalist K (aka Goto Kei) passed away in the morning of December 30th of 2012, due to acute heart failure.

Below is the announcement released on the band’s official site.

=====

To All

Sad News

Kei Goto (as known as K) who is a vocalist of Pay money To my Pain has passed away early December 30th, 2012 due to acute heart failure in his home in Yokohama. He has been loved by so many people since the band’s debut as we all know.
He was only 31 years old, and it was too soon to leave us.
The funeral service is held only in close relatives with the intention of the bereaved.

With poor physical condition due to a mental disease, there were a few times when K suffered very much.
In June, he was hospitalized and there was a time that he could not perform as he intended to do so. After a long fight, he got his potential back. In summer of 2012, PTP performed with their full power, and their own event HOUSE OF CHAOS was a astonishing live show. However, in October, K was hospitalized again, and the band declared an activity stop. K was facing the disease and going on a rehab. We are planning to meet up this year and just about to talk about what we can do this year with the band.

We are all confused and deeply grieved.

K had the strength and delicacy at the same time. Clumsy and people are confused by him,
but he was a man who can think about others a lot, and was a beloved man.

We deeply hope that he is in heaven now and hanging out with the friends up there drinking.

Thank you for supporting K.
We will held a time for you fans soon.

As for now, we are planning to release a brand new album with some songs that K has recorded before his death.

At the end, we apologize that we could not inform you sooner. A judicial autopsy took time due to the holiday season. [sic]

On PTP’s official site, there are also the members’ messages toward K both in Japanese and English.

Popular drama ‘ATARU’ to be continued with a movie

On January 6th, TBS offered a pleasant surprise for the fans of the popular drama ‘ATARU‘ at the end of its four-hour long special episode.

The drama – starring SMAP’s Nakai Masahiro – is going to be continued even further with an upcoming movie titled ‘ATARU THE FIRST LOVE & THE LAST KILL‘ (tentative).

Not much information is known about the movie adaptation other than TOHO is going to distribute it nationwide and that its official website can be accessed via www.ataru-eiga.com.

‘ATARU’ is an original drama by scriptwriter Sakurai Takeharu and features Nakai Masahiro as the lovable ‘Chokozai’ aka ‘Ataru’, who is suffering from the savant syndrome. Chokozai helps two detectives – played by Kuriyama Chiaki and Kitamura Kazuki – solve various difficult cases by using his extraordinary memory and deductive skills. The drama started off with a high television rating of 19.9% and even recorded a single-episode rating of 21.7% during its run.

Therefore, TBS offered it a special episode that aired on the 6th. It was split into two separate stories titled ‘Suteyama Tanteisha Monogatari ~’Anan Kota-kun Yuukai Jiken’ ni Chokozai tachi ga Idomu!!~‘ and ‘ATARU Kanzen Shinsaku Special – New York Kara no Chousenjo!!‘. The latter featured guest stars such as Horikita Maki, Okada Masaki, and AKB48’s Shimazaki Haruka.

JOHNNY’s World’s “Thanksgiving Festival” to be held at Tokyo Dome & Kyocera Dome

During Sexy Zone’s live concert at Yokohama Arena on January 4th, it was announced that the “thanksgiving festival” event for the stage performance “JOHNNY’s World“, which is currently playing at the Imperial Garden Theater, would be held at Tokyo Dome (on March 16th & 17th) and at Kyocera Dome Osaka (on March 30th & 31st).

“JOHNNY’s World” is the newest stage performance that is produced, and directed by the president of Johnny & Associates Inc., Johnny Kitagawa. Hey! Say! JUMP, A.B.C-Z, and Sexy Zone co-star in it.

All the tickets for the stage were sold out on the day it went on sale, and when it was reported that Johnny Kitagawa would rerun the stage, there was a flood of inquiries about it from the fans. Therefore, he’s decided to hold the “thanksgiving festival” which will be a large-scaled event that approximately 200,000 people would attend in 4 days total.

Reportedly, the content for the “thanksgiving festival” event will be different from “JOHNNY’s World”, as Toho, which is the production company for “JOHNNY’s World”, won’t be involved in the festival. Johnny Kitagawa stated, “I want to come up with a new idea without sticking to the story. There will be both musical and dramatic performances.” He also added, “Since the scheduled date is close to the 3・11 (the day of the Tohoku earthquake), I’m thinking about doing something related to it.”

When Nakajima Kento announced the “thanksgiving festival” at Sexy Zone’s live concert, shouts of joy arose from the audience of 15,000. Sexy Zone also announced that they would be holding their first nation-wide tour this spring. Sexy Zone has held live concerts only in Tokyo, Yokohama (Kanagawa), and Osaka, so Nakajima said, “I would like to make stops at 10 locations.” Kikuchi Fuma also said, “I definitely want to go to Hokkaido and Kyushu.” Nakajima also talked about his ambition for 2013, stating, “I want to challenge the program that we have to persevere ourselves this year. It could be bungee-jumping, or something like I stick my face to a snake. I just want to show that we could do anything.”

Another member, Matsushima Sou also revealed that he has been practicing the clarinet since 2 months ago. He said, “When I saw Yamada-kun (*Hey! Say! JUMP’s Yamada Ryosuke) playing sax, I decided to play an instrument. I chose the clarinet by its tone color. I want to collaborate with Nakajima-kun’s piano for our next live concert.”

Kuwata Keisuke to sing the theme song for ‘Saikou no Rikon’

On January 6th, a preview screening for Fuji TV’s drama, ‘Saikou no Rikon‘, was held at Odaiba Cinema Mediage in Tokyo.

At the event, Eita, who plays the protagonist ‘Hamasaki Kosei’, and Ono Machiko, who plays his ex-wife ‘Yuika’, made an appearance together. While it was their first time starring together, they showed their good relationship by calling each other by their first names “Eita” and “Machiko”. Eita even helped Ono walk down the stairs by holding her hand.

During the event, it was also announced that Kuwata Keisuke will be singing the theme song for the drama. The song, “Yin Yang“, will be released as a triple A-side single on March 13th. This will be Kuwata’s first time providing a theme song for a drama since “Ginga no Hoshikuzu” for ‘CONTROL ~Hanzai Shinri Sousa~‘ back in 2011.

The drama’s ending will feature Eita, Ono, Maki Yoko, and Ayano Go dancing to “Yin Yang”. The men will be dressed in tuxedos and the women in dresses with a slit. The dance is said to change per episode.

On this day, Maki was absent from the event due to a cold and Ayano due to a strained back. ‘Saikou no Rikon’ will air every Thursday at 10:00 pm starting January 10th.

V6′ latest single “ROCK YOUR SOUL” tops the chart

V6’s new single “ROCK YOUR SOUL” sold 55,000 copies in the first week, and topped Oricon’s weekly single chart for the week of January 7th.

This was the first time in 2 years and 4 months for the group to top a single or album chart since they last topped the single chart with “only dreaming/Catch” (released in September 2010).

It was also their 25th chart topping single overall. With this accomplishment, for 19 consecutive years they’ve had at least one single in the top 10.

The title track “ROCK YOUR SOUL” is the image song for the popular game “Shin Hokuto Musou“, and it also includes “Music Life” which is the ending theme song for their variety show “Gacha Gacha V6” as the coupling song.

Sandaime J Soul Brothers tops Oricon album chart for the first time

Sandaime J Soul Brothers topped Oricon’s weekly album chart for the week of January 7th with their 3rd album “MIRACLE.”

The album sold 138,000 copies during its first week. This is the highest first week sales for the group. Sandaime JSB’s previous album “TRIBAL SOUL” (released in December of 2011) was landed at second place on the chart, so this marked their first album topping the weekly chart.

12 AKB48 works simultaneously rank on Oricon’s ‘TOP 100′ weekly album chart

12 works by popular idol group AKB48 have simultaneously ranked on Oricon’s latest ’TOP 100′ album chart for the week of January 7th .

Until now, the best record for the “number of albums ranked simultaneously on the TOP 100″, for a female group, was 5 works. Both Candies (in 1978) and KARA (in 2011) achieved that record.

However, to have over 10 works simultaneously ranked on the ‘TOP 100′ f0r any female artists, including solo artists, has only been accomplished by Misora Hibari (12 albums) and Matsuda Seiko (13 albums). Thus, AKB48 is but the 3rd female artist to obtain this achievement in Oricon’s 46-year ranking history.

The 12 works include 11 albums from their “studio recordings collection” released on New Year’s day. 19 albums in total were released, (the release day of『Team 4 1st Stage「Boku no Taiyou」』has been postponed to 1/22) which included recordings of the set lists from their theater performances. The 12th work is their latest album “1830m“, released in August 2012.
