The "Focus Points" are the locations of the sensors that adjust the Auto Focus NOT the exposure (lightness / darkness), they control the auto-focus and determine where the point of focus will be. DSLR cameras have more sophisticated sensors than those used on most Point & Shoot cameras and various manufacturers use different combinations of sensors to give the photographer more choices in selecting where to focus. Most DSLRs use Phase Detection mechanisms that respond very rapidly and can usually focus faster and more accurately than an un-aided human eye and use algorithms to select a focus point, most models allow the photographer to designate a specific point or pattern of points to use as the focus point. Many DSLRs are now adding the less sophisticated (and slower) contrast detection mechanisms used in Point & Shoot (P&S) cameras in order to add Face Detection and Live View focusing features to their models. |
