On December 4th the official match ball for next summer's FIFA World Cup will be revealed. In preparation for this event we will look back at each of the 10 previous World Cup match balls.

TELSTAR - 1970 FIFA WORLD CUP MEXICO

The TelStar, adidas’ first official World Cup match ball, takes centre stage in Mexico. The Telstar was the first white ball ever to be decorated with black pentagons, which later became the archetype of all generic footballs. The name derives from the “Star of Television” as the new design of the ball made it far more visible on black and white television.

TEAMGEIST - FIFA WORLD CUP 2006 GERMANY
Teamgeist, which means 'Team Spirit’, differed from previous balls in having just 14 curved panels, rather than having 32 which had been standard ever since the Telstar ball in 1970. In addition, the panels were bonded together, rather than stitched.

There were many memorable moments in Germany, and being only three and a half years ago, most of them are still fresh in our memories.Who can forget Argentina’s display of true ‘Team Spirit’ as they combine an impressive 24 passes to drive the ball past the defence before Esteban Cambiasso smacked it past the Serbian keeper.
