Royal Selangor International Polo Tournament attracts six teams

Following the success of the RSPC Masters Polo Tournament last month, another team has been formed to play in the Royal Selangor International Polo Tournament.  Showjumping star Quzier Ambak has teamed up with Asad Jumabhoy to form a Jogo Polo team to contest the International that runs from 14th through 22nd July at RSPC.  Jogo Polo have engaged Ginnes Bargalo and Pablo Dorignac to play for them in this 12 to 14 Goal Tournament.  They are one of three teams on the maximum 14 goal handicap.

Masters Champions Thailand Polo field an unchanged team.  Co-Patrons Harald Link and Nicholas Kosmatos have Carlos Pando and Hernan Tasso back in their 14-goal team.  They will be seeking to take all three jewels in the Triple Crown that is made up of the RSPC Masters, Royal Selangor International and the Royal Pahang Classic that will be held in Pekan, Pahang in mid-August.

Ranhill Polo look to turn their game around with a team that features the experience of Argentine 6-goaler Marcelo Caset.  He will link with Huzaini Yunos, who is returning from an adducter injury incurred at the Masters, Malaysian SEA Games player Saladin Mazlan and Ranhil patron Tan Sri Hamdan Mohammad.

Royal Pahang have perhaps the player of the tournament in Francisco Menendez.  Their 7-goaler comes with a fearsome reputation in Argentina as mega-star and match-winner.  He will play in the Royal Pahang team that features His Royal Highness Tengku Mahkota of Pahang and YM Tengku Amir Naseer.

Cameron Highlands had their patrons Brian Miller and Hiroshi Kume all fired up during the Hookahs Polo Tournament, which their joint-team with BRDB won.  New Zealander Craig Wilson returns to play for Camerons.  He is joined by last year's Most Valuable Player at the RSPC International, Ubarjara Alves de Andrade Jr of Brazil.

BRDB field an unchanged team of local boys. RSPC President and BRDB team patron Dato' Mohamed Moiz will try to marshall his team of Edham Shaharuddin, Shaik Reismann and Peter Abisheganaden
to play a team game, hoping the sum of his team will play above their team handicap of +9.  They will have to play off the minimum handicap of 12 goals, and are still the lowest handicapped team of the tournament.

Play starts in the International Division on Sunday 15th July.

The B and C Divisions start the tournament off on Saturday 14th July.  Four teams are entered in both the B and C Divisions.

Jagdeep Kairon teams up with Daryl Yeap and possibly Camilla Sugden to form Guns and Roses.  They are assisted by Franco Rodriguez Daniel and the up-and-coming Muhd Iskandar Alias.

Jogo Kiara Polo look very strong, with Toh Muda Rizal Ramli playing very well in attack, Yudie Fazly Jamili at No 3 and Rizal Ali at back.  Mod Zekri is much improved and plays at No. 1.

Razak Pilus has brought a team all the way from Kelantan.  He plays with three professionals: his long-time pro Azahar, Hayudin Hamsah from Royal Pahang and Sheikh Aminuddin.

Dato' Beh Chun Chuan has also floated horses in for this tournament.  His HTC team features 14-year old Garvey Beh who already plays off +1 goal. Major Yap Mou Soon and Hennie Conraad are the other players in this team.

Four teams have entered the C Division.  David Morais makes a long awaited comeback to polo with the Relish Buzzards team.  Johan Indot, Samsuri Ismail and Karen Gan will make it tough for the opposition.

Tengku Shakrinal will lead Dragon Aerospace Kiara.  He teams up with younger brother Tengku Shahrin Shah, Tengku Shahfuddin and Ayub Khan.

Team Pesat features the experience of DBKL's Roslan Salleh, PDRM's Sjn Hashim, with new boys Abdul Suffian and Hadrisham.

Mumms Kiara sees three scratch handicap players, Major Mansor Zain, rising star Zolkhairy and Hj Suffian paired with Kiara's Norlin.

History of Polo in Malaysia

The first recorded game of polo as described by the Persian poet Firdawsi took place 2,500 years ago, between the Turkomans and the Persians. Alexander the Great is said to have sent King Darius III a polo mallet and ball in 335 b.c. to try and settle their differences on a polo field rather than by war. The game is thought to have spread from Persia to Egypt and eastwards to China and India by the Moghuls. Polo was played in China during the Tang Dynasty and in Japan, where it was known as "dakyu".

Polo was discovered by the British in the 1850's in Manipur, India, where it had been played through the centuries. The Tibetans and Indians called the game 損ulu

Royal Pahang wins Royal Selangor International Polo Tournament

Royal Pahang Polo Club was awarded the Royal Selangor International Polo Tournament.  Heavy rain meant the final day抯 play was called off.  The order of merit was determined on the results of three group matches.  Royal Pahang, which was the only team to have won all three of their matches, was therefore declared the winner. Ranhill Polo finished in 2nd place with two wins, and just ahead of Thailand Polo on goal difference.  BRDB finished 4th.

Cameron Highlands and Jogo Polo played to an 8-8 draw on Saturday, sharing 5th place in this 12-14 goal tournament.

HRH Tengku Mahkota of Pahang captained the Royal Pahang team.  HRH Tengku Amir Nasser had played the final match despite a bad head cut incurred in the first match.  7-goal Argentine professional Francisco Menendez was a class above with his penalty hitting and strong field play.  3-goal pro Amran Selamat was the fourth Royal Pahang player.

Royal Pahang wins a third classic

Royal Pahang won the Royal Pahang Polo Classic for the third straight year with a powerful display of controlled polo.  HRH Tengku Mahkota Pahang captained the team to an easy 6 - 3 victory over high goal debutants Jogo Polo.

Singapore's Asad Jumabhoy had a birthday tournament to remember as Jogo played their way to the final, getting better with each game.
Both teams had qualified for the final with three wins in group play.  Royal Pahang had beaten BRDB 11 - 5 1/2, Ranhill 5 - 2 1/2, and Thailand Polo 3 - 2.  Jogo Polo edged Ranhill 4 - 3 1/2, and grew stronger as they beat Thailand Polo 6 -4 and disposed of BRDB 8 - 4 1/2.

The final was a match-up between +7 goaler Francisco Menendez and +6 goaler Ginnes Bargalo.  Both had played very well to get their teams to the final.  Frankie had the super-tough service of Jorge LaMarche while Ginnes had the hard-working Pablo Dorignac to play with.

Frankie Menendez was outstanding in midfield for Royal Pahang, taking Pahang out to a 6 - 1 lead going into the final chukka before Jogo could pull a couple back to make the scoreline look more respectable. Frankie was voted Most Valuable Player, while HRH Tengku Amir Nasser was voted the most improved player of the tournament.

Cameron Highlands was to met Thailand Polo in the 3rd and 4th place match, while BRDB and Ranhill finished down the order.

The 3rd and 4th place match and the final was scheduled for Saturday 25th August, but rains lashed the royal town of Pekan, and with the field under 3 inches of water, play had to called off with just a chukka played.  The wind blew over a goalpost and the currents carried it around.

Amazingly, the field was playable the next day, though the much anticipated match between a Malaysian selection and an Argentine selection had to be called off because the final was postponed till Sunday.

Kelantan won a very competitive B division, while Kiara Polo won the C Division.

His Majesty, the Sultan of Pahang witnessed the final, and presented the Royal Pahang Classic trophy to his son's team of HRH Tengku Mahkota Pahang, HRH Tengku Amir Nasser, Francisco Menendez and Jorge LaMarche.  Tengku Shazril was the playing substitute.

Polo/Malaysian Open: Thailand tame the US

THE third day of the Malaysian Open Polo Tournament threw up one of the biggest shocks of the competition when Polo Thailand stunned their more illustrious opponents from the United States in the second quarter-final at the Putrajaya Equestrian Park yesterday.

Showing no fear, the Thais showed great tactical awareness as they reveled in the humid weather and dry pitch to upset Polo USA 7-6 to advance to the semi-finals, where they will face off against Jogo Polo, who defeated La Sarita 7-3.

Carlos Pondo was the toast of the Thailand team when he scored four goals to lead them to the impressive victory. Joervy Beh was the US' top scorer with three goals.

In a keenly contested match, the teams were tied 2-2 after the first chukka but Polo Thailand took advantage in the second chukka to lead 5-4.

With their noses in front, the Thais played a smart containment game and matched the Americans blow for blow in the next two chukkas trading a goal each in each chukka to win 7-6.

Meanwhile, Jogo Polo led by Khairy Jamaluddin, showed scant respect for the Argentines as they swept to victory in the another quarter-final.

Both teams, who had a total of 10 handicap each, fought tooth and nail to gain an advantage in the first chukka but it was the local side who led 2-1 at the break.

The second chukka was an even tighter affair as the teams defended their goals valiantly.

A tactical switch in the third chukka saw Khairy, Yudie Fazly and Marcelo knock in a goal a piece to set Jogo Polo on the road to victory.

Two more goals in the last chukka sealed an impressed win for Khairy and gang.

Polo: Thailand continue giant-killing act

THAILAND Polo are in the final of the Malaysian Open Polo Tournament 2007 after another superb upset win at the Putrajaya Equestrian Park yesterday.

After an upset over USA Polo on Wednesday, the Thai team edged Jogo Polo 8-7 in a keenly contested semi-final yesterday.

Thailand drew first blood in the first chukka but it was Jogo who finished strong to take a 3-2 lead at the end of the period.

A three-goal burst from Carlos Pando in the second chukka, saw Thailand regain the lead but two goals from Jogo squared the match at 5-5.

Thailand added two more goals in the third chukka while Jogo could only bag one to make the score 7-6 going into the final chukka.

They will meet Ranhill in tomorrow抯 final while Jogo Polo take on Royal Pahang Polo today to decide the winner of the Prime Minister Cup.

Meanwhile, in the Merdeka Cup competition, USA defeated La Sarita 7-6 to move to final to meet BDRB Polo for the title.

Polo: Malaysians to train in Argentina

KUANTAN: Four members of the Malaysian polo squad will train in Argentina next month in preparation of the Korat SEA Games in Thailand.

Royal Malaysian Polo Association president Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah said the four were Zulhairi Kosli, Saladin Mazlan, Shaik Reisman and Tengku Shahzrin Tengku Sulaiman.

"There is no polo championship from now until November and these players should enhance their fitness and technical capability before December," he told reporters after attending a briefing on the development of the Kampung Baru Chendor mosque here on Wednesday.

He said the squad would train in Pekan, Pahang, before the trip to Argentina.

Tengku Abdullah, who is also part of the squad, said the squad was confident of bringing back the gold medal from the SEA Games on Dec 5-16 although it was expected to face stiff competition from Thailand and the Philippines.

The last time Malaysia won gold in the event was in the 1983 SEA Games in Singapore, with the Philippines taking the silver and Singapore, the bronze.
